    3. Hi, Just wanted to say thank you for your time and information. Thanks to you, I now can add one more reason why I believe that Sarah was a Housden. I love to hear stories about my ancestors and those they have associated with. Thanks again, Deanna Housden- Campen

    1. [TNWILLIA-L] Sterling Harper and the Housden Connection (maybe)
    2. Wolfpup212
    3. Sterling C. Harper was born in Williamson County in 1846. He also had an uncle, Sterling T. Harper that was born in Williamson County in 1809. I am assuming that the Sterling in the Housden murder case was Sterling C. Harper (Assumptions may be fatal in this business, but, this is the most direct connection and probably the right age group.). Sterling C. Harper had a younger brother, Felix A. or G. Harper, born in 1847 in Williamson County. Felix married Margaret P. Maxwell in December of 1867. (The connection in this case would be brother-in-law). Stirling's family lived in Williamson County along Murfreesburo Pike . Sterling joined the Union Army in September of 1864 when he was 17 but claimed that he was 18. Sterling was what was know as a substitute, taking the place of Hamilton B McClintock. Sterling joined the 12th Cavalry, Tennessee Volunteers. Sterling deserted from the Cavalry in December and was listed as deserted on the muster rolls in January of 1865. Luck for Sterling's decendents, the Civil War ended in April of 1865 and Sterling was not captured until August of 1865 at his home 4 1/2 miles down Murfreesburo Pike. Deserters were usually hanged. He was inprisoned, eventually ordered to return to duty, and eventually mustered-out in October 1865. Sterling had to pay for a horse and other Army equipment that he took when he deserted. I suspect that Sterling could not read or write because he signed his enlistment contract with an X. I believe that his parents were also probably illiterate because of a letter on file at the National Archives that was written for Sterling's mother Rebecca (Burge was her maiden name) asking that he be released and allowed to return home. Sterling married Parmelia Ann (maiden name as yet unknown) and had 6 children, Joseph in 1876, Blanche in 1978, Felix Jordan in 1879, Lillie in 1880, Sadie in 1887 and Oda in 1889. Sterling was born to Asa Harper (Jr) and Rebecca Burge and had 5 brothers and sisters: Ira in 1839, Susan in 1843, Harriet in 1844, Felix in 1847, and William in 1858. Sterling's father's father was Asa Harper (Sr). He was born sometime around 1780 in Virginia and moved to Tennessee sometime before 1809 when his first son was born in Tennessee. His wife was either Fannie, Harnie, or ?. They had 5 children: Sterling T. (Sterling C's uncle), two females born between 1810 and 1820, James in 1818 and Asa (Jr) in 1822. Asa senior and his wife lived a very long time. They appear in the 1860 census as 80 and 75 respectively. An article appearing in the Nashville Union and American, 21 Novembr 1874 speaks of "Asa Harper of Williamson County, was 100 years old on March 6 (maybe a little premature?) and in good health." I have been trying to get a copy of this article, but, as of yet I have been unsuccessful. Well, that is the Sterling story and family background. I would be most interested in hearing from anyone that can add to the family tree or the Sterling story. Denise Leifeste wolfpup212@aol.com

    3. Hi All, Taken from the Obituaries from Tennessee Newspapers g. Mrs William C Stain Jill Garrett 1984 Page 175 Housen, Mrs., 60, who lived 9 miles from Nashville on the Nolensville Pike, was taken from her home Monday night by unknown persons and hanged in gallows for hogs. When she was found, she was quite dead. (Whig and Tribune, Jackson, TN, 5 April 1873) Sarah Housen, aged lady, was taken out of her bed and hanged; widow of Dan Housen. She was hanged from cross beam where hogs were slaughtered. She was the step-daughter of Sterling Guy and was the third of the children to meet unnatural death. One drowned in James River, Virginia, and another froze to death. The murder is a mystery. (Nashville Union and American, 26 March 1873.) There is some evidence against two negroes in the murder of Mrs. Housen. William C. Housen has also been accused of murdering his mother. She was buried on the farm. (Nashville Union and American, 30 March 1873.) Mrs. S.J. Housen is in jail as an accessory in the murder of her mother-in-law. (Nashville Union and American, 6 Aug. 1873.) Mrs. William Housen is on trial for the murder of old lady Housen. Sterling Harper, a cousin of Housen's, was implicated in the death. (Nashville Union and American, 16 May 1874.) The Housden clan lived in Williamson County from about the 18teen's to the 1840's. Benjamin Housden had at least 9 sons and 5 daughters.(according the the 1820-1840 Census.) We have seemed to find the daughters as they married and stayed in Williamson County, i.e, Chamberlin, Brown, Guy. I can only find my grandfather, the 8 other sons have seemed to fallen of the face of the world. Benjamin bought land from Jabez Owen Esq. (who died Aug 19, 1850 of Typhoid Fever. Jabez was a old and much respected citizen.) (Seems that Jabez's son?- Jabez Owen stabed his brother, Richard Owen in the left breast in an affray: he had only been married less than a week. (If someone has that story, would love to hear it!) Benjamin sold his land to Wyatt Ellis. Can't seem to find anything else on the Housden's in Williamson. (Any suggestions or help would be appreciated!) I believe that Benjamin moved to Henry County, TN sometime in the 1840's, with his son James Housden. (Wonder if he high tailed it out of there, because he owed people money?) The reason why I believe, but cannot confirm that Sarah is a Housden, is for several reasons: 1. My gg grandfather James Housden married Elizabeth Crocker in Williamson CO. There marriage records list his surname as Housen. 2. I found a marriage record of a William C. Housden to a Sarah Jane Maxwell in 1867. (compare to William C. Housen and Mrs. S.J. Housen) 3. The Guy surname is one that the Housden's have married into, even in Virginia, where they migrated from. 4. Is in the general area where the Housden's were. (For all you out there that are familiar with the area, is this Williamson County - ( Nolensville Pike) or close to it?) Would love to hear any stories relating to the county during the period that my ancestors were there. Sterling Harper sound's rather interesting. Was he related to any Maxwell's? I know quite a bit about two of Harris & Elizabeth Ogilvie's children, Mary Ogilvie Allen & William W. Ogilvie. However, I would like to know more of the family of Frances Ogilvie & John Rains Jr. John Rains Jr was a son of John Rains, the well known Indian scout/fighter. I have a record, "Felix Robertson Rains was the 6th of 13 children of John Rains Jr & Frances Ogilvie," but I don't know any more of this family. During the Civil War, one of my Allen cousins from Marshall Co (a grandson of Mary Ogilvie Allen), was captured and imprisoned at Camp Morton in Indianapolis. In a letter from his wife, she advises him to "write Rob Rains" for help in getting a release. Who was Rob Rains, & why might he have been able to help in getting a release from POW camp? 3. I believe that Frances Ogilvie and John Rains, Jr. went to Texas fairly early on -- like 1830's with a group of local people that included some of my kinsmen from the Frost family. The Frost settled in Fort Bend County and were a founding family of Houston, TX. I will check that out to see what I can find. I know I have a reference to it somewhere.
