I am trying to find out anything about Priscilla Cloud born in abt 1828 married Joseph Hunter in 1842 in Williamson County. Any leads to her father and or mother. Thanks Nan
I found two marriage records for Joseph BEST. One in Williamson County Joseph BEST to Nancy PHELPS on November 22, 1820 and another one in Davidson County Joseph BEST to Laury SINCLAIR on May 20, 1823. I hope this may help you find more BEST family members in Tennessee. Denise Leifeste
Hi, Michelle. Thanks for writing. Funny you should mention Chatham Co NC. I and a couple of Dowdy "cousins" have been told John Dowdy came from Chatham Co NC to Williamson Co TN, but so far we have been unable to find him in Chatham. However, in the course of looking, we learned a lot about the Chatham Co bunch. John left there (if he ever was there) before 1820 and I know nothing about the Dowdy's who remained in Chatham after that time period. They were probably all cousins somehow, some way. Do your Dowdy's have a connection to Williamson Co. TN?? Wayne Hill
Nancy: I have a number of Hughes in my family. Let me check it out and I will email you in a day or two with the info. Good Luck. Larry Scott LScott2329@aol.com
Bill: I have some Ragsdale's in my family way back. Give me a day or two to check them out and I will email you what I found. I believe they came from Virginia to Tennessee around 1830. Good Luck. Larry Scott LScott2329@aol.com

-- I have Dowdy's I'm looking for. I don't know where they were before they went into NC, though. I have Nicholas Dowdy, born about 1825 who married Lillie Edwards. They were in Chatham NC in 1850 and then in 1870 they were in Carroll County, VA. The kids were Gaston, Armenia (Amelia), Lawrence, Aaron, and Richard. I think Nicholas had a brother named John, but in the Civil War he was fighting with the NC Troops until the both of them deserted on Feb. 5, 1865 near St. Petersburg, VA. In your search for Dowdy's, do any of these names sound familiar?????? ---Original Message----- From: Wjusthill <Wjusthill@aol.com> To: TNWILLIA-L@rootsweb.com <TNWILLIA-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, April 25, 1998 7:01 PM Subject: [TNWILLIA-L] Dowdy, Graham >Hello, everyone. Hello All, It's great finding so much activity on a list. Darlene, you must be doing something right! New here and I'm trying to research my Marshall line. They were one of the early pioneer families into Middle Tennessee. The first Gilbert (#1) was married to Catherine Fitzpatrick. I've heard they were English (however, family lore says they were Scottish). I've heard a story about how they fled to the Borders during the Reformation and then to County Antrim. In this story they were titled "Sir Gilbert and Lady Catherine". I've heard from a "cousin" who has John Marshall (b. 1654) as the first Gilbert's father. No mother listed. She has Catherine's parents as John Fitzpatrick (b. 1662) His wife (Catherine's mother) was also "Catherine" (b. 1662). My problem is my inability to document any of this. My immigrating ancestor, whose information I feel fairly comfortable with, Gilbert Marshall (#2) (1715-1801) and his wife, Martha Rowan (Roan??) (1730-1798) were married in Antrim on 1 Jun 1748 in (maybe) Carnmoney. Martha's parents were William Rowan and Jane Marshall. The "Sir Gilbert & Lady Catherine" story says the Rowans were a well known family in Antrim County history. Does anyone have a lead on them? Gilbert & Martha had the following children: Jane b. 21 Apr 1750 in Ireland +Samuel Davis Mary b. 21 Dec 1751 in Little Britain, PA +Joseph Love Catherine b. 10 Mar 1754 in Albemarle County, VA John b. 24 Jan 1755 in Albemarle County, VA William b. 02 Nov 1757 in Albemarle County, VA +Ann Bell (my gggg grandparents) Martha b. 04 Oct 1759 in Albemarle County, VA +Barnaby Broyles Gilbert (#3) b. 21 Mar 1762 in Albemarle County, VA d. 1782 Battle of Blue Licks KY Hannah b. 09 Feb 1765 in Albemarle County, VA +Patrick McCutcheon (McKutchen) +(2nd) James Price Elizabeth b. 19 Nov 1766 in Albemarle County, VA +William Turnbull (moved to Ohio??) Margaret b. 21 Mar 1768 in Albemarle County, VA +John Larkins James b. 12 Mar 1771 in Albemarle County, VA +Margaret Wilson Sarah b. 23 May 1773 in Albemarle County, VA +David Cloyd All this family moved from Virginia to middle Tennessee in about 1787. William (my ggggg grandfather) received a land grant from North Carolina for his service in the Revolutionary War. His father, Gilbert, also received a grant. William's was 320 acres on the bank of the Big Harpeth River. They ended up in Davidson, Williamson, Marshall counties in Tennessee. Is anyone else researching this line? I'd really like to learn more about Gilbert Marshall and Catherine Fitzpatrick...where they were really from but have not idea where to start. Any suggestions? These must be free as I have no money to invest in this investigation. Will appreciate any information. Thanks in advance. Lynda Marshall mailto:mikelyn@e-tex.com
Thanks. I am rather new to all of this and it hadn't occurred to me to do that. It may have eventually, but it might have taken a while. Dear Bill, I have two Ragsdales in my file. Joshua Ragsdale married Mary Sullivan, Feb 5, 1849 in Dickson Co. Mary was born may 22, 1830. They had at least one daughter - Martha Jane Ragsdale, born Dec 22, 1849. Hope this helps. And I'm sure you have lots of years left. Hi Lynda, Nope I'm not doing anything.....just a great bunch of people researchin' their roots in Williamson Co. Here is some information from the "Williamson Co TN, Wills and Administrations, 1800 to 1861: an Index, by Byron Sistler, 1989, Nashville, TN. No Fitzpatrick listed. MARSHALL...... Ann, 1861, wb-13-407 Ann, 1861, wb-13-408 Elizabeth, 1854, wb-11-88 Elizabeth, 1855, wb-11-500 Gilbert, 1857, wb-12-414 W. S., 1857, wb-12-375 William, 1826, wb-4-92 William S., 1857, wb-12-376 And, no Rowan listed. The year stated is the year of probate, year of will or first year mentioned in the estate. The HARPERs may be somehow related to the HOUSDENs. At least Sterling C. HARPER was implicated in the murder of Sara HOUSDEN (HOUSEN) I have now discovered, with the most gracious help of the Williamson County Public Library and Archives (bless their hearts) that the HARPERs had another skirmish with the law. >From the miscellaneous records, Williamson County Tennessee, Vol. 5, the following: ASA HARPER JR., ASA HARPER SR. STERLING HARPER and SAMUEL SCOTT charged with attempted murder on JOHN ALLEN 3 January 1840. Now some interesting notes that I, as of yet, have no connections for: A Samuel SCOTT Married a Maria GUINN in 1842. A John ALLEN married a Mary GUINN in 1836. Samuel SCOTT may have been a son of Viney SCOTT that was married to Sterling T. HARPER (in 1836) since she was about 8 years older and census records show that the there were two males and three females in their household that were born between 1820 and 1835. Does anyone have any addition information on this? In addition a dear woman names Louise at the archives sent information that shows that Asa HARPER Sr. was married to Frances (Fanny) RICE (HARPER) in 1805 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. I understand from this information that Frances Rice was the daughter of Samuel RICE and Eleanor _______ RICE. Eleanor was born in Castlebar, Ireland on January 1, 1757, was orphaned, and came to America around 1869. She and Samuel RICE had a large family before Samuel died in 1807. Eleanor RICE moved to Williamson County with a son, Francis RICE in 1813 (Fanny HARPER and Asa HARPER Sr. were in Williamson County before 1809 when their first son was born), and died October 21, 1846. Samuel and Eleanor RICE had the following children (I think). James, Francis, Stephen (Stephen had two children, Mary E.O., and Emily S.), Frances (Fanny HARPER), Sally, Betsey, and Sterling (This Sterling is a RICE). Does anyone know of the RICE family in Williamson County? I must admit that this family has been a lot of fun to research because they always seem to be in so much trouble. I can't wait fto add more details to the HARPER/RICE family story. HARPER family tree Descendants of Asa Harper Sr. Generation No. 1 1. ASA HARPER1 SR. was born 1780 in Virginia. Hi! I have just joined the group to find out more about my family in TN. I am researching Michael Best (3 Aug 1777, Tyrrell County, NC), his wife Anna Spence (1777, also of Tyrrell County, NC) and their children: Joseph, Ephraim, James, William, Elizabeth, Phetnea, Kisiah, Frances, John, Mary Ann, and Wesley. In a migration from NC to Macoupin County, IL, they moved into Williamson County and lived there from abt. 1814-1822. (I found Michael and family listed in the Williamson County 1820 Census, but have no idea just where in the county they lived.) While John and Mary Ann were born there, some of the older children born in NC are believed to have married and stayed in Williamson County when the rest of the family moved farther north. Does anyone have these names in their family history? I would appreciate any information.

Hello, everyone. I'm searching for information on the family of Garner DOWDY and his wife Eliza GRAHAM DOWDY. Garner's father was John DOWDY who died in 1845, leaving a will. They lived in the southern part of the county bordering on Marshall County. In 1850 there was a James GRAHAM age 80 living with Garner and Eliza in Marshall County (before this time Garner and Eliza lived in Williamson and were married there in 1839. I'm thinking maybe this was James' land and that he may have been Eliza's father. I know nothing of these GRAHAMS other than that. Can anyone help?? Wayne Hill

Hi Jennie, Found a marriage for John A. FAULKENBURY to Eliza J. ORMAN, Jan 12, 1833 (bond), BM: Richard L. ANDREWS in the "Marriages of Williamson Co TN, 1804-1850" compiled by Edythe Rucker Whitley. Hope this helps! Darlene Anderson
Martha (Patsy) Kidd Taylor was the daughter of Benjamin Kidd. He had two other daughters, Jane, who married Samuel Morton in 1817, and Nancy, who married Joseph H. Hampton. The latter was my ancestor. T. Vance Little
