    3. Hello, I am looking for anything on the DOWDY family, who lived in Williamson County. John Dowdy b. abt 1780 in N.C. and his wife Raney (madin name unknown). In the book Flat Creek it states that their was a Charles Dowdy who may have been an older relative of John Dowdy. It says that he was buriedin the Ezell-Brown cemetery, is there any dates on the stone ? Does anyone know anything about the early Dowdy families who camr from N.C. to Williamson Co. Tn. ?? Thank You !! Sue Feild

    3. Joe, yes, the tombstones in the cemetery on Sumners Knob have been transcribed and are in Volume One of Williamson County Historical Society's "Williamson County Burials" (1973). What families are you researching. I know most of the families. The property around the cemetery is owned by my cousins the McCanless family. You also have a Skelly cousin in the area. Vance

    3. Looking for information about the Braden's they owned land in Williamson Co. and sold some to Samuel Grigg married to Mary Braden b. 1780. John Braden maybe Mary's brother. Joseph Braden Maybe be her brother also. Joseph has a daughter named Mary but she is 20 yrs off. They all live in the same area. Land next to Maury Co, Tn. I have a list of children for Joseph Braden b. Aug. 18, 1765 married to Elenor Grimes b. 1769. Patrick Henry Braden b. 1800 Catherine John Nancy Elizabeth Mary b. 1807 Joesph Preston b. Jan. 27, 1809 Jacob Grimes b. 1814 William Felix G. So I think that Mary b.1780 and John b. 1770-80 and Joseph b. 1765 are siblings. They all show up on census records close together. Any information on these family would be apprciated. Linda

    3. Good morning all, Worked an extra day in the fall so I have a day off today. Trying to grade exams and do genealogy at the same time. I ran across a will written, dated, and proved in Cumberland Co. Va. 1755. The descendants of the author of this will eventually wound up in Williamson Co. abt. 1810. William Thompson was appointed executor; and is signified by the author of the will as "my good friend". Now, somewhere down the road of 30 years of digging up the bones of my kinfolk, I seem to remember that this indicates a relationship between the two men that is other than just "friends", maybe a relative. Thompson married Eugenia Russell NC and the author does mention his "Russell" grandchildren, but I don't believe Thompson was a son-in-law in that none of the author's daughters mentioned in the will married a Thompson. I know with all of the great information that is posted on this list that someone out there knows this. Appreciate a response, Barbara

    2. Ernest & Claudette Ittner
    3. Since my husband & I have just been trying to find a good & complete answer concening marriage bonds in order to explain it to our daughter, I was quite interested to find a question on the subject here. I have looked in "The Source" edited by Cerny & Eakle, in encyclopoedias, dictionaries, and any genealogical source book or those containing marriage records which I found handy or in our local library. Not one gives a complete & satisfactory explanation (as far as I am concerned). The co-signer does always seem to be a relative of the bride -- not necessarily the father. Then does the bride's relative put up half or some other portion of the money? >From a book of "Knox Co. TN Marriage Records" the following is in the preface, "The applicant for a marriage license was required to give a bond in the amount of five hundred pounds which was to guarantee that there was no lawful cause to obstruct the marriage or any unpaid debts owed by the applicant." I will be anxiously awaiting an answer to this. Claudette Ittner

    1. [TNWILLIA-L] QUESTION RE WILLIAMSON CTY MARRIAGE LICENSE
    2. Carol McCoy
    3. I have a Xeroxed copy of a marriage license for my greatgrandparents, Elijah and Sallie (BEECH) BARRETT who married May 15, 1870. The license is divided in three parts. The first is authorization to the minister to join the names of the betrothed, and the second is the certificate of solemnization of rites. I have a question regarding the third part which states in part: "Know all Men by these Presents, that we, Elijah Barrett and Constantine Beech [which I believe is Sallie's father], all of the county of Williamson, in the State of TN, are held and firmly bound unto the State of TN in the sum of twelve hundred and fifty dollars, which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our and each of our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally by these presents." Did it cost $1250 to obtain a license in 1870??? I would appreciate your input on this. Regards, Carol McCoy Dallas, Texas
