I am new to this list and would like to share what information I have in hopes someone will recognize names or make suggestions to me. My ggggrandfather was Samuel ORTEN/ORTON, born Rowan County, NC in 1785. He married Rebecca CAMPBELL in Rowan County about 1805. That I can document. I can also trace Rebecca CAMPBELL's family back a few generations. My real concern and interest is Samuel and his parentage, my brick wall. Samuel and Rebecca had several children, some born in NC and at least two in Tn. Family history says Samuel settled "around Nashville" and that is all. Sometime after 1817 Rebecca died. That can be verified by the birthdate of her last known child. Sometime after that Samuel married Sarah CARTWRIGHT. Samuel and Sarah had one known child born in 1820. Samuel died in 1824. No record has been found of Rebecca Campbell Orten's death, no record of Samuel's second marriage to Sarah CARTWRIGHT has been found. No record of Samuel Orten's death has been found either. Again, by family history, Samuel was a landowner in property "around Nashville". He served in the War of 1812 in Captain John Dalton's Company, 2nd Reg't Tennessee Militia and gave a power of attorney to K V Emery (I think I'm reading that right) to pick up Samuel's pay for service in the war. In the power of attorney form it says Samuel Orten is from Williamson County, Tn. although the power of attorney was executed in Davidson County. Since no land records have been found for property Samuel was supposed to have owned in Tennessee, it has been suggested that wherever his land was, was in an area that the boundaries changed and where the purchase may have been recorded hasn't been located. Samuel allegedly died intestate but if he was a landowner, someone would have had to probate his estate. A search for a will or probate records hasn't been located. I don't believe at this time widows were allowed to handle real estate transactions without some kind of assistance. I haven't found a record of any kind indicating someone was acting on Samuel's estate. If he did in fact own land in Tennessee someone would have had to arrange for the sale of the property after his death. Samuel Orten is alleged to have a brother named Joseph Orten (unproved). The two 'brothers' enlisted in the War of 1812 at the same time. Joseph Orten's parents are unknown also. It is suspected that they are brothers and possibly the sons of John Orten who owned land on the Yadkin River in Rowan County, NC. There appears to be a gap in the family documentation and I suspect a disagreement of some kind within the family may have been the cause of Samuel and Joseph now out there wandering around by themselves with no family to connect to. The Orten/Orton family has always been closely connected to the BRYAN family and there have been marriages between the two families. Samuel's second wife, Sarah Cartwright Orten, upon the death of Samuel, brought the family to St. Genevieve and St. Francois Counties in Missouri where Samuel's oldest son was interested in working in the lead mines. No record has been found of Sarah Orten's death or burial sight. Again, this information comes through family history. No documentation. Whatever help or suggestions anyone cares to make would be greatly appreciated. I can be more specific with details if needed. Thank you. Karen Orten Cannon kcannon@bootheel.net

I have just finished uploading the 1836 Williamson County map that shows the various districts. This is an outline map only. You will need to use a different map to really get accurate locations but at least this will give you some idea where the districts are located. These are the origional descriptions and some of them have changed over the years. Also, a few on the east part of the county were transferred to Rutherford County when it was formed. Some of the copy was hard to read and these will be addes, corrected and updated as I figure out what should go there. The map has not been linked from the main page just yet. Here is the location: http://www.tngenweb.org/williamson/history/WmCoDst1836Map.html Many thanks to Colleen Campbell Taylor for the map and descriptions. I am also working on the 1878 District owners map that shows locations of land owners for each district. This will be put up district by district as I can get it done. The first ones should go up this weekend. I want to thank Gloria for allowing me to get my foot back in the door and help her out on the Williamson County web site. I was starting to have Genealogical Withdrawal and she was kind enough to accept my help. Glad to be back among all you nice folks. Cheers, Noel
Thank you for your reply and information. I was asked this question by an old gentleman and I told him I would try to track it down. Thanks again Joe Also, we appreciate your work on keeping this site going - Good Job!!
Liberty is located in northeast Williamson County between Brentwood and Nolensville. Liberty itself grew up around the Liberty Methodist Church. One of the earliest trustees of the Liberty Church was John Fly. He later moved to Maury County and settled what is know as Fly Station However, when he died he was buried in Williamson County on Ragsdale Road. The Liberty school was opened in 1900 on land donated by W. L. and Cynthia Fly. There are also many of the Fly family buried in the Nolensville cemetery. My Thanks to all for your help and info... I am quite excited about the prospect of getting to go to one ancestral county where I've never visited. If anyone stumbles onto SCONCE or MAYFIELD, please let me know. The SCONCE is definitely mine, and I am still researching MAYFIELD. Thanks again!! Unless something has changed in the last year, there is no charge for researching. You can do your own coping from microfilm readers/printers for 25 cent a page and photocopy from hard copy for 10 or 15 cent (don't remember which). They will copy for you from original manuscript for, I believe that was 25 cent. They are very helpful. If you ask they will give you a quick tour and show you where different information may be found. Ed ----------------------------- See home page at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~adams1895

Judy - If you have any interest in A.N.B. Brooks, then you may want to review the claim he made against the U.S. Government subsequent to the Civil War. It makes for interesting history and there is a fair amount of information. Depending upon where you are, they would have it on microfilm at the Tennessee State Archives and I strongly suspect that it could be ordered at your nearest Family History Center.
