    3. Residents had to pay property taxes. Many of the early property tax roll--including those for White County, TN--were typed by WPA workers prior to WWII. We copied (via pencil and paper) tax records from such a book in East Tennessee Historical Center--McClung Historicl Collection, Knoxville, TN. "Transcriptions of the County Archives of TN #93, White County (Sparta) Tax Book 1811-1815" prepared by the TN Historical Records Survey -- WPA April, 1940, The TN Historical Records Survey." The data in the books had been typed on onion skin paper with carbon paper and thence was considered too delicate for photocopying. For defense purposes all adult males had to register whenever they moved into a new county. The tax lists are by militia companies, i.e. "Capt. Isaac Privet's Company of Militia for the year of 1811.'
