I'm trying to understand 2 items: 1. I have copies of records where "John Halterman enters -- acres of preference claim in White County on the waters of the Caney Fork Northside agreeable to an act of the General Assembly passed at Murfreeborough on the 22nd day of November 1823 giving a preference to settlers-------." I have several of these, that read the same, but other land descriptions. My question on this is where can I find out about this "Act", and the reason behind it. I don't think its newly opened land, as I know John Halterman was in White County as early as 1810. 2. I have one land grant of John Haltermans that describes one piece of land as "on both sides of the Caney Fork, beginning at a rock marked JFHM, then South striking the river at 20 poles, in all 50 poles to a small gum at the edge of the river, on the South side, then West through the bluff of the Caney Fork 64 poles to a post thence (?) striking the river at 20 poles in all 54 poles to an ash at the edge of the riveron the North side under the bluff where a spring falls over said bluff, then East 64 poles to the beginning, including the main falls in said Caney Fork." Question: Is anyone out there able to identify where this property is now located?
