O.k. Let's see. What I've found is that the James Rice in Wythe County moved to Greenup County, KY by 1811, and some of that Elijah Rice's descendants were there too, and both lines there wound up in Carter County, KY where William Rice of Wythe County settled. So, we see that that particular line of Rices went to Kentucky, and there is the probability that the George Rice who married Nancy Woods in Wythe County Dec 14, 1790 is probably mine. Nancy was also probably his first wife, if he was the same George who died in White County, TN in 1806. He may have been a son of William Rice of Montgomery, Wythe Counties VA, and Carter County, KY. That old William Rice was on the 1850 census in Carter County, from what I've been told, and died at the age of 94 - meaning he outlived both George Rice and my ancestor, his possible grandson, who died in 1845. The William Rice who was in Wilkes County, N.C. with four boys under 16 in 1787 and 1790 was probably your ancestor. He seemed to have lived in close proximity to the Yadkin River, which would put him in the area that later became Madison County. You should first concentrate on locating early Wilkes County AND Rowan County, N.C. records, since I think Wilkes County was established from Rowan. However, in all likelihood, your William Rice probably settled in N.C. from Virginia. A William Rice and John Rice were in Halifax, Henry and Pittsylvania Counties in the 1750's and 1760's. This is directly North of what was then Wilkes or Rowan County, N.C. My ancestor, Rowland Judd, was in Wilkes County when he died in 1802 or 1806, and had been a Captain in the Wilkes County Militia in 1780 in place of Larkin Cleveland who had been wounded on the Catawba River by the Tories. Rowland Judd was a KNOWN associate of the Cherokee, and was probably a son in law or brother in law to Outacity, Mankiller of Senaco and Oconastota, Prince of Chota (Bristol, TN), which was on the present day boundary of Tennessee and Virginia. In fact, as early as the French and Indian War, Judd was with Washington at the battle of Fort Loudon in 1757, and was also with Outacity and Oconastota, who was called "Judd's Friend". They were preparing to move against the Shawnee on the Ohio River, but couldn't do so because they ran out of supplies. Many, many Wilkes County families seem to have been involved with the Indians, and your Rices were probably no exception. I believe the "Abijah" /Elijah Rice who married Joley Ann Brown in Wilson County, Tn about 1818 was supposedly born in Cocke County, TN which is south of Hawkins County about 1795. In all likelihood, at that date, it would probably still have been either the State of Franklin, or Hawkins County. There is definite Indian blood in that Abijah Rice line, and Joley Ann Brown was the daughter of a Leonard Brown who's wife or mother was said to have been full-blooded Cherokee. This is a start, at least. Perhaps we can throw all this out on the list to see if anyone can make a connection. At present, I'm very, very interested in finding out more about those Rice families in the area which became Greenup and Carter Counties, KY. Hopefully, too, someone has access to Jackson County, TN deed records between 1800-1806 to see if George Rice is mentioned, as we would have been in that part of Jackson which became White County in 1806, just before his death. I'm sending copies of this to the rice list, tnroots, and the white county list in hopes someone might be able to give us a few clues here.
