    1. [TNWHITE] Oldest marriage book?
    2. I must have missed the beginning of this subject heading. Is someone doing look ups in an old marriage book? Regardless, does anyone have any Hickman's in their files for White County, TN? I am looking for Hickman marriages, but definitely Mary "Polly" Hickman to James Cooper. This should be abt. 1825-1828. If someone is looking for marriage in an old book, could you look that one up? If not, can everyone check their files for any Hickmans or Coopers in White County, TN and get back to me? Thanks,Karen

    1. [TNWHITE] Marriage Lookups in Oldest Book
    2. Can someone look to see if there is a marriage for a Joel HOLDER to Charlotta ?? in the earliest marriage book. I am trying to find out who my gg-grandfather's parents were? His name was George Washington WILLIAMS, b. 3/12/1840 Sparta, White Co., TN.; d. 2/22/1920 Huntsville, Madison Co., AL.. There are NO Williams' families on the 1850 White Co. Census with a son named George abt 10 yrs of age. However the above mentioned couple does! Wondering if perhaps Charlotta is a WILLIAMS? Also, could you look up a marriage of a John WATSON to Elizabeth ?? Is anyone researching the HOLDER or WATSON families? Thank you Lisa Wlliams in TX

It was "Compiled and Published By: Sharon Johnson DOLIANTE" and "Copied by Mary Fancher MITCHELL". A copy is on file at the White County Public Library in Sparta. >I found this copy in the White County Library. I have been doing research at the White County Courthouse and I have seen the original book. It is very old.< According to the "Introduction" pages v-vii, 25 yrs. prior to publication date, the late Mrs. B. K. MITCHELL, nee Mary FANCHER, served as Clerk and Master then as Deputy Clerk and Master for an additional 10 or 15 years. During this time she copied many of the OLDEST Marriage Records, including loose sheets found "in the old dirt-floored basement vault of the courthouse"! She was approached in 1961 about publication of these records. However, at a much later date she gave a copy of her work to Charles LEONARD. He allowed the above-mentioned ladies to "make a copy". Since the records ended at an odd date (Feb.1, 1859), they urged Mrs. MITCHELL to bring them to 1860, preferably 1880. She agreed to do this, but never advised them when this was done. After several years, this project was forgotten. When it resurfaced, Charles LEONARD advised them that Mrs. MITCHELL had completed the "Oldest Marriage Book" into the 1880s before her demise and had left the records to him. However, when they received the manuscript, it was only HALF of the oldest marriage book! The earliest record located was dated Dec. 4, 1809, between PUCKETT, John & LYDA, Rhody. Remember the "loose sheets"? Mrs. MITCHELL had "carefully returned these papers to the vault. . . .they are now missing!" Since there is no longer a basement vault, but a newer courthouse, this publication appears to be the "only permanent record of those early marriages". Important notations concerning these records: L.P.-B.V. = Loose Page-Basement Vault Colored = indicates Mixed Blood (e.g., Indian); slaves were not allowed to marry before the Civil War F.M.C. = Free Man of Color F.W.C. = Free Woman of Color THOUGHT: Rev. John GREENE spent his entire 43 years as a Baptist Minister in White County, TN (since 1810). HOWEVER, only 5 marriages are on record that he is credited with performing. This could explain WHY you cannot locate your ancestor's marriage record when you have documentation (i.e. family bible) to prove otherwise! NOW, I do not have the entire book. As in the case with some of the others who have responded, I only copied pages that pertained to my family lines (DOYLE and HOLLAND; sure wish I had known about McDANIEL at the time!) This is what I DO have though: p. 1 / (Groom unknown) + Agatha HOWEL thro' ANDERSON, Allen p.3 / ARNOLD, Francis thro' BAKER, Johnathan p.18 / DODSON, John H. thro' DUGGAN, John W. p.29 / HARRIS, Barnett thro' HENRY, Waman p.30 / HENRY, Wm. thro' HILL, Wm. p.31 / HILTON, Leroy thro' HOOPER, David p.33 / HOWELL, Silas thro' HUNTER, John p.34 / HUNTER, Joseph thro' HUTSON, Matthias, Jr. p.35 / HUTSON, Pleasant thro' JAY, Wm. Hope the above information helps to understand why you may be experiencing difficulty in locating your ancestors' marriage record. If I can help anyone with the few pages I have on file, feel free to contact me privately at <montco1@cwix.com>. JEANNIE MONTGOMERY St.Louis County, MO

    3. HI, I have a copy of the Robinson/Robertson/Robeson/Robison pages of the Oldest Marriage Book in White County. On page 57 this is how it reads: ROBISON, John & Senora J. Wilhite-Aug. 11, 1856, by Richard Simpson, Esq.-p.54 I know this book was transcribed by someone else. I found this copy in the White County Library. I have been doing research at the White County Courthouse and I have seen the original book. It is very old. I will look again the next time I am there and confirm what is on this page with that of the original. Sorry to send it so small, but I wanted to type it just as it reads on the page. I also have pages of this book with names Christian - Cole page 12 Hutson - Jay page 35 McNeely - Marlow page 45 Ramsey - Rice page 54 Rice - Roberts page 55 Roberts - Robinson page 56 Robison - Sapp page 57 Simons - Smith page 60 If I can do a look up for someone let me know. 3. We Texans, too, would like some help! We've looked and looked for the marriage of Madison Frank Williams and Louisa Downie McGee! Could anyone with access to the Oldest Marriage Book take a look and see if they are included? They were from White Co., (Sparta) Cherry Creek area. Her father (Abraham McGee) deeded the land for the Cherry Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church; she deeded land for the Upper Creek Cemetery next to the church. Thanks so much for any and all help. 1. [TNWHITE] Roysden Robertson
    2. Dale Welch
    3. Hello list, Does anyone have anything about Roysden Robertson who is buried in the France Cem. I know that he was a 2nd Lt. in Co. K 25th TN Inf. CSA and Capt of it and Co. D28th Con. Inf. CSA later. In the France Cem., in an earlier post, I told about the Carmichael brothers. They, along with Champ Ferguson, are buried there. I just discovered Robertson's grave. They all had military markers. Roysden Robertson is spelled so many different ways its hard to keep up. Roysden and Rizen. Roberson, Robertson, Robberson, and so on. Its spelled Roysden Robertson on his tombstone. Robertson doesn't have a military marker. His stone is about faded out. It reads: R. Robertson b. Sept. 20, 1829 d. Oct.30, 1909. He is buried beside other Robertsons a couple named after him, I guess, because they were younger. (late 1840s and one 1880s). Also, I'm putting together a list of Confederate soldiers who are buried in Putnam, Overton, White, Jackson etc. If you have an ancestor that was in the CONFEDERATE army, tell him his NAME, RANK, COMPANY, UNIT, PLACE WERE HE'S BURIED AND BIRTH AND DEATH DATES. Thanks, Dale Welch 303 Tayes Ave. Monterey, TN 38574

    1. [TNWHITE] William B. and Eleanor Rice
    2. Willie Smith
    3. I am wondering if anyone else on the list is researching the Rice families in White County. I am convinced that Theodorick Bland Rice and my ancestor, William B. Rice were cousins. Theodorick was a grandson of Charles Rice Sr. of Goochland County, Virginia, but we've not been able to determine where William B. Rice came from. We are also wondering if he is the same William Rice who owned the property on Cumberland Mountain on Big Laurel Creek. A William Rice had his survey witnessed by George W. Miller and Enoch Rice on September 24, 1824. There are several land grants for this William Rice on Cumberland Mountain. I am thinking this very well may have been our William B. Rice who also purchased the land on Peter's Cove Branch and along the Falling Water River, and who is buried in the Rice Cemetery with Eleanor Rice near Burgess Falls Park. Do any of you have any information on this? William's origin continues to be a mystery. Thanks Will Smith

Rootsweb has added "Post-ems," a memo/explanatory space to the Social Security Death Index found at <http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi> When you access the Social Security Death Index through Rootsweb, you may post additions and corrections to index. You also may view what others have posted. This is a good place to add: maiden name spouse marriage date and place names of parents place of death date and place of burial names of children places of residence You may also provide correct information about dates of birth or death when the SSDI data is not correct.
