    3. When I was in White Co in 1984, they assured me that they had NO marriage certificates, only the ledger book. I had them copy the the page even though the entry was one line, and stamp it as a certified copy. That was the best they would do. No additional information of any kind than what is in the book. I have wondered if in later years, such as 1880's or later, that certificates might exist. Diana Williams

    3. Good luck! Several years ago I requested several marriage records for Bumbaloughs from White County. The request was sent to the White County Clerk and then referred to a person in charge of old records. She sent me certificates that party X had married party Y on date Z and that in information appeared on the XX page of marriage book YY. It was little more than what I had learned from the marriage books about White County. I notice that the Genealogy Society there is getting the requests now. Maybe they will actually go to the courthouse, dig the information out and make copies for you. I would ask for that. White County government seems quite uncooperative when it comes to helping genealogy researchers. 2. Willie Smith
    3. Need marriage record of John C. Sherrill and Nancy Howell. Nancy was born about 1828 and was a daughter of John and Nancy (Brewer) Howell. Also need descendancy info. Seems they had a son named Roscoe Sherrill. Also need descendancy info on Nancy's brother, Lewis Howell. He was married three times: to Jerusha Duncan, Mary Spears, and Charlotte (Lafever) Nash, widow of William Nash. Do any of you have the dates for Lewis Howell's marriage to these women? thanks Will Smith

    3. It's interesting that my great-great grandfather was also named Marion Rice (1833-1902). Do you have any connections to Logan county, KY by chance? I find a James H. Rice there in the 1820's or 30's, and also found a James H. Rice in White County, TN minutes 1811 suing some Andersons there. Also, the name "Logan" Rice is repeated at least twice in my family. 1. [TNWHITE] 1845 marriage in White Co., TN
    2. Does anyone know more about a Justice of the Peace named JACKSON? Though my ancestors are found in a list of marriages abstracted by Fred Sisser III Thomas T. Nicholas and Ariselar Moon m. 8 Oct 1845 in White co., TN. When I wrote for a copy of the marriage record I was told that one did not exsist. When Ariselar Moon Nicholas (Zilla) had to prove marriage to receive Thomas' Civil War pension their marriage record could not be found. The Civil War pension states "That she was married to Thomas T. Nicholas, Oct 8th 1845, by a Justice of the Peace named JACKSON, who resided near Sparta, in White County, Tennessee: that she is unable to get any information from the records of White County, Tenn. regarding said marriage: that she does not know where to find the Officer who performed the ceremony nor any of the witnesses who were present at said ceremoney..." HICKMAN performing the marriage ceremony in 1845 in WHITE County. AND, in "The WARREN County Story" by Eugene Wiseman, Rev. Jesse E. HICKMAN is listed as having organized the Main Street Presbyterian Church in 1839 as a part of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church (p.56) Earlier Karen <Ladykdee@aol.com> asked about HICKMANs and I had no marriage listings in WHITE Co. for any Grooms with this name. HOWEVER, the Rev. Jesse E. HICKMAN and Nathaniel HICKMAN are mentioned in the WARREN County book referenced above. > I am looking for Hickman marriages, but definitely Mary "Polly" Hickman to James Cooper. This should be abt. 1825-1828.< ALSO, there is a James COOPER listed in the same WARREN Co. book under the "1812 Collins River District Tax List" as well as a Samuel COOPER. Other COOPERs mentioned in this book: E. B. / Elizabeth / Cooper Family / Gov. / John / Joseph / William / Winfred A. COOPER Family members are mentioned as being buried at two (2) cemeteries in WARREN Co: Pine Bluff Cemetery at the Pine Bluff Methodist Church; and, Old Philadelphia Cemetery at Vervilla (one of the oldest in the county). Would anyone know where I could get a copy of this record? < According to the White County website through TnGenWeb, this is available at the County Clerk's Office (Marriages from 1809 - Present) at: County Clerk 1 E. Bockman Way Sparta, TN 38583 (931) 836-3712 I would suggest you call them for their current Fee before sending your request. THOUGHT: For those of you who are having difficulty finding the marriage of your ancestor recorded in White County, try checking Warren County. Some of my ancestors originally settled in White County by 1806. But, in 1807 the area they settled became Warren County. Also, try the following counties: Cannon (1836 - from Coffee & Warren) Coffee (1836 - from Franklin & Warren) DeKalb (1837-38, from Cannon, Warren & White) Franklin (1807 - from Warren) Grundy (1844 - from Coffee & Warren) Van Buren (1840 - from Warren & White) Warren (1807 - from White) White (1806 - from Overton, Jackson & Smith) PLEASE NOTE, each of the above counties were formed from land that at one time was a part of WHITE County. I have listed the year each county was formed and ONLY the counties that had been a part of White County at the time they were established. For example: Cannon County was formed from Coffee, Warren and Wilson counties in 1836. BUT, Wilson County was NEVER a part of WHITE County at any time. Therefore, it was not included. LIKEWISE, any marriages PRIOR to 1806 in what became known as WHITE Co., look at Overton (1806), Jackson (1801) or Smith (1799) counties. Hope this gives some of you success in your search! A copy is on file at the White County Public Library in Sparta, TN. My posting on this book, tells you what is included and what is not, and why, etc. Be sure to look this one up. It may explain WHY you can't locate marriages you KNOW took place in White Co., TN. Since the book is in alpha order by GROOMS, I do not have the page you need, which is COOPER. I DO have the page that would include HICKMAN (your Bride). However, there are not any HICKMAN Grooms listed on this page -- only HICKEY and HICKS. Hopefully, someone else on the List will have the page with COOPER on it. A list of the pages I do have was posted in the previous message. You should have received it around 12:30 AM (last night).
