    1. [TNWHITE] Looper/Rice
    2. Willie Smith
    3. In view of my previous post, just in case others come to the wrong conclusion, I must reiterate that as yet there is no POSITIVE PROOF that Nelly Looper was in fact ELLENDER RICE. Several things fit my scenario, but it will take considerable research to determine IF I am right about Eleanor being "Nelly" Looper. I must not jump to conclusions. However, it is a definite fact that there were two William Rices in White County by 1825, and that the one that was there in 1820 was NOT mine as I had previously and erroneously supposed. The census data just does not jive with my William's data from the 1830 census. However, the census data from Pendleton District of South Carolina in 1820 is consistant with William's data in 1830. There is also the matter of the name "Logan" appearing in my Rice families. In checking the Pendleton District records, the William Rice found there was living in very close proximity to Logans. Therefore, the names of Logan Mansfield Rice and William Logan Rice MAY prove to have had their source from this family in Pendleton District of South Carolina. The pieces do seem to fit, however superficially. If anyone runs across any data which may help prove or disprove my THEORY, and at present it is ONLY theory, I hope that you will contact me immediately. Thanks! Will Smith

    1. [TNWHITE] Great Progress made on origin of William Rice of White County, TN
    2. Willie Smith
    3. FINALLY! A breakthrough! William B. Rice of White county, TN is NOT the same William Rice who was there in White county in 1820. The 1820 William Rice was living on Cumberland Mountain, on the headwaters of the Caney Fork as early as 1819, when he received several land grants on the old stage coach road on Cumberland Mountain, and was much older than our William Rice on the Falling Water. William in 1820 had three sons in his household, while William Rice has two sons in his household in 1820 S.C. and two sons in 1830 White County. The William Rice on Cumberland Mountain vanishes by 1830, and was associated with an Enoch Rice, Mary Rice, and a George W. Miller. It now appears that OUR William Rice was in old Pendleton District of South Carolina in 1820, and Eleanor/Ellender Rice was actually Ellender "Nelly" LOOPER, daughter of Joseph Looper and Mary Magness of Overton County, TN. Joseph Looper was in Pendleton County, South Carolina records in 1790, 1800, 1810 and 1820. A Joseph Looper Jr. appears in Overton County land grant records as early as 1823, and his son Magness Looper was there by 1820. William Rice appears in White county during the same time frame, and was one of two William Rices in White county on the 1825 tax list. While no DEFINITE proof has been found to tie these two families together as far as court records are concerned, census data shows that "Ellender" Rice was born about 1792 in South Carolina, which fits the description of "Nelly" Looper daughter of Joseph Looper like a glove. Joseph Looper had sons by the names of Joseph and Samuel. William and Eleanor/Ellender Rice had grandsons named Joseph and Samuel. If anyone has additional information to help substantiate this information, please contact me immediately. We are in need of some proof that Ellender was indeed "Nelly" Looper, which it now appears she very well may have been. Will Smith

    1. Re: [TNWHITE] Durham's in White County?
    2. Bonnie Reach
    3. Gloria Spurlock message regarding Thomas Durham, September 8. I know nothing of Thomas Durham, but could he relate to these White Co. Durhams? Pleasant Farley married a Durham. The Farleys came to White Co. TN very early from Caswell Co., NC and that area (into lower VA). Lucretia Durham married George Hutson, Jr following the War of 1812. She and George lived out their lives in White Co. George was son of George and Creasey Hutson of Old Pendleton District, SC (Pickins Co.) Elizabeth Durham married Wm Hutson, brother of George above. Census says she was born in SC. Relatives say she was daughter of an Isham Durham. (I've never found an Isham Durham). They had 4 young sons on the 1820 White Co., TN census, so could have married in SC or White Co. Several children were born in White Co. before they removed to Cole Co., MO where other Durhams also lived. Sally Durham, 1830 census, White Co., TN lived between my Hutsons with 2 small sons. David Durham (not on 1840 White Co. census) had sons William and George. Wm H. Hutson became their guardian in 1841 in White Co. George Durham married Mary Jane Poe in White Co., March 7, 1848, but was not on the 1850 census there. How are these Durhams related to each other? Who are their parents and where did they come from? 1. [TNWHITE] White County early Marriage Records
    2. Hillra Qualls
    3. Hi, I hate to tell you but the information in the marriage book is all there is on some of the first ones. But I think that is correct. The office will give you a certified statement of the marriage if that helps or that was what I saw them doing for people trying to get into the DAR. They got in I guess it worked. There are a few later 1800's with a bond still there but I want to say it is after the 1870's but it has been a long time since I looked at the bonds. They are not all there only a few.I would think it was Mrs. Delma Wallace, retired school teacher who did the look up when she could. I do not know if she is able to do those now or not. As for the staff to look up that information would be very expensive to the taxpayers. I believe all the court house material in the County Court Clerks office is on micro film or that was my understanding also. I wonder how many people on this list knows how to work the Court house records. It is very interesting but I usually find a lot of people do not learn to work or read the hand writing of the 1800's. I do remember the cost of having plastic over the first will book and having a new outside bound is several thousand of dollars each. Hillra

    3. Maybe things have changed. I was last there in 1993 or so. The couty clerk's office people were quite friendly and helpful. They allowed me into the vault where the records were kept and gave me a chance to look for what i needed. I had no trouble with that part -- what i did have a problem with was the mail requests. Those are the ones that produced the certicates I memntioned. I asked for photocopies of the pages in the marriage books, but that request was referred to a Delma Wallace who sent the certificates.
