On the 1793 taxlist of Wythe County, Virginia I find these Rice men: GEORGE, William, Elijah, James. Do any of you have information on these men? Are they connected to Charles Rice Sr. of Goochland County, VA? A lady sent me a list of William Rice's children, but I cannot find it and fear it was lost when my first computer crashed last year. Apparently Charles had thirteen children. I have found that a George Rice died in White county, TN in 1806, with wife named Mary. Daughter Sally, other children not named, who apparently were not of age. Rice names in 1820-1830 in White County include Enoch,John,Mary, Solomon, Thomas, William, and Theodorick Bland Rice (lineage established). Any help on these names would be greatly appreciated. Would love to have any marriage records on the Rice family in Wythe Count prior to 1800. Thanks! Will Smith +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "Socialism offers no novelties except to those who will not read history"
Are there any references to the BRYAN families in the New River area prior to 1800? A John Bryan in White County, TN has been found to have been connected to a George Rice who died in White County in 1806. This was a descendant of Morgan Bryan. Rumor has it that Daniel Boone was accompanied to Kentucky by a Joseph and Samuel RICE. Perhaps George was a son of one of these men. Samuel Rice appears in Green County, KY records near my JUDD family. Judds and Rices are closely associated in Putnam County, TN. Very interested in finding out if a George Rice was in the same vicinity as the Bryans prior to 1800 in either North Carolina or Kentucky. Thanks! Will Smith
New Clue! Any mention in Madison County about a George Rice who may or may not have lived in the same general vicinity as the BRYAN family prior to 1800? This is Daniel Boone's wife's family. Boone was from the Yadkin River valley in what was Rowan County, N.C. before the establishment of Madison County. Found out that a George Rice (widow's name Mary who appears in White county census records) died in White county, TN and John BRYAN, Robert G. Anderson and one of Robert's sons were helping to settle his estate. George's will is conveniently missing from the White County Minutes but it is indexed. Thankfully, a general overview of that will was found in the White County registrar's office today, and he seems to have left the bulk of his estate to daughter SALLY Rice. I'm wondering now if perhaps John Bryan, or one of the Andersons married her. Took a little trip to Sparta today, and found out that Robert G. Anderson and one of his boys were appointed administrator of George Rice's estate. The Mary Rice that appears on the 1820 or 1830 census was his wife. Also, John Bryan was involved in this scenario, and these Bryans are descended from Morgan Bryan, and related to Rebecca (Bryan) Boone. Got the info from the Registrar of Deeds. The index for the White County minute book had George Rice's will indexed, but that page (rather conveniently) was gone. Just my luck! Apparently the William Rice on cumberland mountain was a son of this George Rice. There were two William Rices in White county on the 1825 taxlist, one of whom was mine. George Rice died in White County in 1806, and my William B. Rice may have been a son of this other William from the 1820 census - or possibly even the same William (the other one may have just been there between 1820 and 1830 and just moved off. I have also found that Robert G. Anderson may have been a son of James Anderson of Spartanburg County, South Carolina, raising the distinct possibility that he could have been a brother of my William Rice's wife, Eleanor/Ellender. At present, I haven't any info on these Andersons, except that James had one daughter born between 1790 and 1800 enumerated in his household in Spartanburg County in 1800. If anyone has info on these Bryan and Anderson families, please contact me! George Rice just may have been my William B. Rice's father. James H. Rice who appears in White county Minutes in 1811 may have been a brother or uncle to William B. Rice. The name "James Harvey Rice" is used by William's descendants. Would like to track John Bryan and the Andersons to where they originated to see if there are any Rice families amongst them. A Samuel Rice appears in Green County, KY and there is a Judd connection to the Boones and to Green County. The Judd families of Green and Adair Counties, KY are strongly associated with my Rice family. Also, one of William's and Eleanor's grandsons was named "Green" Rice. Hopefully, this can be figured out. My suspicion that Eleanor may have been a Looper just doesn't pan out at all. I would be very interested in knowing more about what you have on the Alexander Kerr land in White County. I believe this alexander died in 1815 of disease after the Battle of New Orleans. His wife was supposedly Leannah Jarvis. Can you tell me when Alexander Kerr bought the land, and what happened to it? the James Kerr you mentioned...is that the one who died about 1825 in White co? He could fit as an uncle of Alexander. I am very curious about James kerr. Is this William Kerr you mentioned the one who is enumerated in White County in 1850? I am very curious about him, too. Is he a son of James Kerr? Alexander Kerr had a son named William who would have been born ca 1809-1813. I can't find him...the one in the 1850 White county census is too old to be a son of Alexander Kerr. what gets my attention is that this 1850 William Kerr had a son named Absolom and a son named Alexander...William, Absolom and Alexander are all names used in the Surry county Kerrs. Alexander Kerr also had a brother John (my ancestor). John and Alexander served in the same W TN militia in the War of 1812. After the war, John moved across the state line into Monroe county, KY. I had always assumed, but had never found any record of, that John was in the northern Overton County area. I think now it was possible he was living further south in the White county area, since I found Alexander's family there. Is there any sign of any land transactions for a John Kerr? Who ever was researching the Isaac Rice who married a Keithley please contact me. I've found this in White county, TN 1820 census: Kethly, Jesse - 400010-000100 I need to see what page he was on in the 1830 White County, TN census. 1830 census is not online, so I need to see if this man was there in 1830 and if so, what page was he on, and see what page William Rice was on as well. Also need to know if the two Kerr men listed in White county had any connection to Caswell County, N.C. These were James Kerr and William Kerr. William Rice's property adjoined the land of a Kerr in White county on the Falling Water river. Will Smith
If anyone has the census indexes for White County for 1820, 1830 would you check to see if there are any BARKER families listed? Also interested in the Kerr living near William Rice. Wasn't he Alexander Kerr? If anyone has data on these White County Kerr families, were they by chance from Caswell County, N.C.? Just got an important clue. Thanks! I have added the names and information found regarding those members of Colms' 1st TN Infantry Battalion who died while held prisoner at Camp Morton to my roster at: http://www.ficom.net/members/wolfslayer/1tennbn.html If anyone is researching Anderson, Atnip, Hensley, Howard, Kyle, Petty, Smith, Pinckney, Taylor, Thompson, and Warren, these are the surnames of those who I have found who died at Camp Morton, who were listed as members of Colm's Battalion (with the exception of Eli Kyle, of K Company, 50th Consolidated Infantry. Thought this might be of interest. The books include obits from Warren County newspapers but the folks who passed away are also from surrounding counties and may even be from out of state if they had relatives in the area. I haven't seen the books personally but I've heard good things about the first volume and the second includes more information and even follow-up stories.
