    1. [TNWHITE] Local DAR of White County
    2. Willie Smith
    3. Does anyone know who the local head of the White County, TN DAR is? I want to find out who provided the spurious information by which the John "Hamilton" Howell DAR monument was set up in the Elrod Cemetery. The John Howell who served in Capt. Nathaniel William's Company of Light Infantry, 2nd N.C. Battalion, during the Revolutionary War was the son of Joshua Howell, and was born in Dobbs (now Wayne County, N.C. in 1753 and was a minister of the Episcopal Church, living all his life in Wayne County, N.C. and died there at the age of 90 years in 1843. He was never in Tennessee, and there was no John Howell operating a gristmill in White County in 1797. White County did not exist in 1797. Neither was his middle name "Hamilton". This spurious middle name is not used amongst any of John's and Nancy's children, nor in the family of John Howell of Wayne County, N.C. It is sad when people take old wives' tales and crackpot research as fact and put it in the heritage book. John Howell came to Tennessee between March 12, 1811 and August 1812, with his brother Calvin Howell and Richard Cole, and purchased land on Cherry Creek. Richard Cole's wife was Sarah Pool, daughter of William Pool Sr. of White County, TN. Their son, Isaiah Cole, married Anner/Onner Howell in Grayson County, VA in 1804. Calvin Howell married Barbara Rhudy in Grayson County, VA in 1807, and John Howell married Nancy Brewer, daughter of LEWIS Brewer and Agatha Holland (MASTIN Brewer was her brother), in Grayson County, Va on March 12, 1811. It is my belief that John and Calvin Howell were the sons of either Capt. George Howell and his wife, Mary "Polly" Osborne, or George's brother, William Howell, who resided on New River at the mouth of Fox Creek, in Grayson County. In all likelihood, George Howell was their father, since George was the only Howell who had land on Elk Creek (Turkey Fork), and who lived in the immediate vicinity of Lewis Brewer and Jacob Rhudy in Grayson ! County. 2. Hi everyone, In honor of Veteran's Day I've decided to offer lookups of the small amount of military resources I have. If anyone would like the have the listings of the Johnson's Island Confederate Cemetery listings, or the TN Confederate Pensions Index looked up, drop me a line. And for those who only have e-mail access, or have trouble getting the online Family Finder Index, I'll be happy to check the CD version for any military record CD's your ancestors might be on. Feel free to forward this to your fellow researchers, or to other lists you think might benefit, because I know I'm not subscribed to every list that could. :) Also, while I usually get lookup requests taken care of in a matter of hours, if it takes me a couple of days to get to yours, hang in there, the Pensions Index is the most popular thing I own, and I also get several requests for it from Lookup Libraries..but you will hear from me ! :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Analee Watts, IBSSG Delano, CA Listowner of SLEEP-L at Rootsweb communities..aka "Enter Sandwoman" ;) The Watts & Rodriguez Family Home Page http://www3.cybercities.com/w/wattsgen/index.html Nuestra Lineaje Genealogy Graphics http://members.aol.com/NuestraLineaje/main.html (Moving to Rootsweb !) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    1. Re: [TNWHITE] Militia records
    2. Julia C. Smith
    3. To those interested in White County, Tennessee, early tax rolls [Tennessee State Library and Archives micropublication roll 123] and militia: White County, Tennessee, was divided into taxing units that corresponded to its militia districts in the period 1811 through 1835. The year 1811 was the first extant tax list in White County. From 1836 onward the taxing units were referred to by number, such District No. 1 or District No. 15. One who was listed on the tax roll in a certain militia district may or may not have served in the militia in that district, depending on his age, physical ability, and occupation. It is assumed that the Captain who was listed in that militia bearing his name was actually an elected officer in the militia. Rosters of those who served in the militia from White County and other counties of Tennessee during the War of 1812 and its associated Creek War in 1814 have been published. Captains who served in 4th Regiment West Tennessee Militia Infantry in federal service, January 1814-May 1814, served under Captains: James Bennett, Robert Campbell, John Chitwood, Samuel Maxwell, James Randals, Richard Ratton, and James Shinault. [Go to <http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/1812reg.htm> Those listed as paying a white poll in Tennessee from 1811 and onward were between the ages of 21 and 50. The date of birth of your research subject can be determined with fair accuracy when he drops off the list at age 50 because he will give proof to the collector that year. The age he first pays a poll and comes onto the list (if he owns no taxable property) may be off by a few years. No one goes to the tax collector and tells him he is now age 21 and ready to be taxed. If one owed slaves, he paid a black poll for each. Early tax lists taxed also on stud horses, rate or fee for the horses' services, retail stores, town lots, carriages, and acres of land. The location of the land was sometimes given. 3. If any of you live in the Sparta area, I could really use your help! I'm hoping to figure out what Robert G. Anderson's relationship to George RICE may have been when in 1806 Rice appointed Robert G. Anderson as his administrator. Is there any record or rumor amongst the Andersons of any Anderson women having married a Rice prior to 1806? I know Robert was in Bourbon County, KY in 1800 with the Bryants and am curious as to the connection between the Andersons and Bryants, and also Turner Lane. I find Turner Lane, the Bryants, and George Rice in Wythe County, VA in 1793. Mr. Lane was a teacher back in Virginia, and I'm wondering if he taught school in old Jackson and White Counties too. Are there any Wood/Woods families living near Robert G. Anderson's family in White County? A George Rice in Wythe County VA married Nancy Woods there in December 1793. This is possibly a first or second wife of George Rice, or this is a younger George Rice. George's wife in White County was Mary. He left a great deal of his estate to Sally Rice, his daughter by his first wife, and the rest of his children were to inherit as they came of age, indicating they were minors in 1806. Unfortunately, the page his will and settlement were supposed to appear on were missing from the original book at the Sparta courthouse, and I was hoping to fnd a more detailed record of his children. If you know of a favorite website that pokes fun at politicians, I'd like to link to it from that page. We all need a good laugh. I'm also adding a World War Two page in the near future, and would like links to sites dealing with the Second World War and Veterans Organizations. I'd like to get it up and running by November 11th (Veterans Day). I have one link on the political satire page to "Message Mates" which is absolutely hilarious and well worth visiting.
