The OLDEST MARRIAGE BOOK of White Co says that Esquire was used for Justice of the Peace. It also says that Thomas Green was the son of Rev. John as was William Green, Esq. also the son of Rev. John. It says that Rev. John Green was a Baptist preacher. Diana Williams
STEWART, ANDERSON, SMALLMAN, MEADORS Thomas W. STEWART born 1843 North Carolina married Martha M. ANDERSON on October 31, 1866 in White Co., TN. Martha M. was born 1844 in White Co., TN. She was the daughter/stepdaughter of William ANDERSON and Elizabeth SMALLMAN who married January 30, 1849. Since Martha M. ANDERSON was born 5 years before her parents married, she may be the daughter of Elizabeth SMALLMAN's first husband Isaac MEADORS and may have been adopted by her stepfather William ANDERSON. I would like to exchange data with STEWART, ANDERSON, SMALLMAN and MEADORS descendants of these individuals. I would particularly like to establish the realtionship between Martha M. and the ANDERSON and MEADORS families. Ken Robertson KRobert214@aol.com

Does anyone have additional information on Thomas GREEN? All I know about him as that he performed many marriages in White Co., Tennessee, including the second marriage of my great great grandfather Caswell Cobb ROBERTS and Stacy SIMMONS on 10 December 1842. After each entry where he has performed a marriage is the notation "esq." (esquire). Pardon my ignorance but does anyone know just exactly what that would have signified? Does anyone know if Thomas presided over a particular church and if so which one and where was it located? Also, has anyone ever heard of a Methodist Circuit Rider in the White and Warren County, Tennessee areas known as "Rough and Ready Watts"? Any help appreciated. Gail
One of my acnestors was Mary Scott who married John England(5/6/1790-6/16/1839). Their son David Scott England and Nancy Golden were my ggggrandparents. They were from White County. I don't have any other information about the Scott family, but it looks like there could be a connection here.. There are now three resources on the White Co page for researching surnames (of White Co): 1. The Search Engine, which searches all text in all pages on the White Co site, including archived queries. Be sure and check the various spellings. 2. The Registry. Deposit your surnames and your Email so other researchers can find you. I am currently the only one registered, so let's get with it! 3. The Reference. Search the database above for others working on your lines. Their name and Email are displayed. Please let me know if you have any trouble with the programs, or if there are features that should be added. I guess we'd all have to admit that legends sometimes get mixed up with genealogy. So even though I hate to be even a little bit off subject, since the subject has come up, I'd like to encourage everyone to spend a lot of time at the Urban Legends page shown in the link below. It has a search engine for looking up any forwarded scare or sob story that you may receive to get the whole truth. Book mark the site and check out all the legends that frequently go around. I'm sure you've all heard many of them and may not have realized them for what they are. For those of you who need the URL to access it, here it is. http://snopes.simplenet.com/spoons/ Enjoy! Click here: Urban Legends Reference Pages: Tales of the Wooden Spoon
