This DAVID CLARK is the ancestor of many current residents of the Weakley County area. The following story is a brief summary of the David Clark story as told in the pension records. Each part of the story is contained in a sworn deposition made under oath to officials of the state and county courts. The story is supported by depositions from several people. These depositions were found in the Index of the Revolutionary War Pension Applications in the National Archives listed under: CLARK, DAVID, North Carolina, Charity, R1964. DAVID CLARK'S family came from Bedford County Virginia to Surry County North Carolina sometime before the Revolutionary War. David entered the Company of Captain William Shepherd as a volunteer in 1776 and served in an expedition against the "Scotch Tories" near Cross Creek in the vicinty of Fayetteville, North Carolina. He served in several different expeditions under different commanders, returning to his father's home between them throughout the war. He was involved in the expedition against the Cherokee that resulted in the Treaty of Long Island. He also served in the campaign against the Tory Bryant and the Tory Roberds. In 1778, David married CHARITY BOON in Surry County and hired a replacement to serve in his place for five or six months. This was the only long interruption in his service. After the war, David and and several others in his family moved to the Pendleton District of South Carolina. In 1803, he and perhaps three of his brothers moved to Christian County, Kentucky. After living there for five or six years, David and at least two of his seven children, DAVID JR and WILLIAM moved to what is now Weakley County. These are the Clarks that settled near what is now known as Good Springs Church north of the North Fork of the Obion. The youngest of the children, David Jr., subsequently moved to the northern part of Graves County, Kentucky and from there to Massac County, Illinois. WILLIAM was an established farmer when the county was first created. He was an early road foreman and was on the first tax list. He lived on the same farm until his death in 1845. His widow, JANE, lived on that same farm until her death in 1900. William and Jane had eleven children three of whom, Robert, James, and Micajah, raised families in the area. Robert had twelve children. His descendants are the most numerous in the Weakley area today. Family Group Sheet Subject* William CLARK (185) Birth: __ ___ 1787 Pendleton Dist SC.
