    1. Re: [TNWEAKLE] Census transcriptions

    3. Oh, yes, I've found the family name BEDARD listed as BEDOUR; CARROLL, as CHURCH; CAMBIO(A) listed as COMBE; GERVASIO, as GENNANO. I've found the given name Basil as Basse; and let's not talk about what census takers did with the name Barthelimie. These are names from my husband's family and not from Weakley County, TN, but I can clearly see the results of English speaking census takers on French and Italian names. The CARROLL/ CHURCH was transcription error entirely. The name was hard to read and there was a Church about 2 names up the page. The way I found out the correct name by going to the Birth/Baptismal online database from Prince Edward Island where the two oldest children were born and trying to look them up. I could read both parents first names clearly. I found no "Churches", so I started the the C* and got too many results. Then looking at the original document on Ancestry, I tried CA*, and immediately found both children and the family last name. I had suspected that the mother was a 2 great aunt of my husband. I confirmed it later with some more digging into more recent censuses. And yes, I did use the correction notes area on the right hand side. The correction was posted within the hour. So the long and short of it is that one should always ask what other ways of spelling a name there might be. The Weakley County person I am looking for is John MOORE (ca.1830). Cam Ellis Mt.
