Anne, Unless there are complaints and possibly some proof of damage more than $500 this will most likely be disposed of with a guilty plea in General Sessions Court. The usual sentence for this type of offense would be a suspended sentence with possibly some community service and restitution, fine and court costs and a period of unsupervised probation. Restitution would amount to $100 each. There is less than a week for any actions to be taken one way or the other. I believe the actual ownership of the church reverts to the Methodist Synod when the congregation disbands. I know that is the way it is with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church is to the Presbytery. All Baptist churches are independent and the remaining members would own those properties. Most do belong to the Southern Baptist Convention but they are still independent. You did exactly what the rest of us needed to have done, and you have shared the information in a well informed, welll reasoned manner. The information you have rounded up is just what was needed.... I'll appreciate further updates from the list as the case moves through the legal system. You raised a very pertinent question also, regarding the actual ownership of the church. I'm hoping someone on the list comes through with answers... or is willing to research deeds at the courthouse. Thank you very much for this information. Anne No virus found in this outgoing message.
