She was born Abt. 1780 in NC, and died December 11, 1837 in Macoupin Co, IL. Notes for JOSHUA CAUDLE: In the early 1800s Joshua and his father, Jesse, moved their families to Maury/Marshall Co, TN. Joshua became deacon of the Shiloh (Rock Creek) Baptist Church near Lewisburg in Maury Co, TN for several years. Land records show that John, Thomas, Isham and Joshua purchased land in Macoupin Co, IL in 1834-36 and that Isham, Samuel, Thomas and Sion (John's son) bought land in Wayne Co, IL. (per Theresa Brewer) Per Betty Rickardson - brich@ddc.net The 1830 Macoupin Co. Census has Joshua Coddle, Isham Coddle, John Coddle and Jarvis Coddle. Joshua has in his household a male 60-70 . He would have been 60 at the time. He has a male between 5 and 10, two 10-15, one 15-20, one female 50-60. Who was Jarves Coddle (Caudle) who was 30-40 years old in 1830? Must be related. Also on 1830 census is Fountain Land who was a half brother to Hester Ann Butcher who m. Thomas Parish Caudle as her mother Rebecca Narcissus Rentfro m. first John Land (son Fountain) and second Isaac Butcher. In the book History of the Disciples in Illinois 1819-1914, pages 427-434 online edition 1997 by James L. McMillan, various churches of Wayne Co., Illinois are mentioned. The Buckeye church at Jeffersonville was organized in 1840. This online book says: "In 1939 a number of families emigrated from Columbiana, Carroll, and Stark Counties, Ohio and settled in Lamard Prarie. All of these were Disciples. Among them were Jesse Milner, Isaac and Edward Whitaker, Jonas and Fentore Lumm, John Morlan, Martin Emmons, Noah Towns, James McNeeley, John Skelton, James A. Maslan, and Townsend Richards. About the same time a few families came from Tennessee and settled in the same neighborhood. Among them were the Butcher and Candle families, Edward Puckett and others who were also members of the Christian Church. The Candle family mentioned is surely Caudle. Hester Butcher married Thomas Parish Caudle. They are both buried in Buckeye cemetery. ____ "History of Wayne County, Illinois" published by Globe Publishing Co, Historical Publishers, Chicago, IL. This book was located at UW Historical Library, Madison, WI F547 W25 H57 1984 P.125 Christian Church - In the year 1839, a number of families emigrated from Columbiana, Carroll and Stark Counties, Ohio, to this county and settled in Lamard Prairie and vicinity. All of these families belonged to the Christian Church, . . . About the same time a few families settled in the same neighborhood from Tennessee, among whom were the Butler family and the Caudle family, and Edward Puckett and others, who were members of the Christian Church. P.229 Joshua Caudle and son, Thomas, came from Tennessee. The former was peculiar and eccentric, but was a zealous member of the Christian Church. During the latter years of his life, he would hobble to church, and upon reaching the entrance to the sacred tabernacle, he would yell at the top of his voice, Brethren and sisters, how do you all do? And it made no difference if services had commenced, as was usually the case upon his arrival, his greeting was as above stated. For a long time previous to his decease, he expressed the most ardent desires to meet the grim monster, and seemed to entertain no fears whatever of crossing the cold dark river. P.229-230 The early settlers of Lamard Township in common with the pioneers of other portions of the county, were subjected to the dangers and privations of the times. One of the great drawbacks was the procuring of bread. The hand-mill and mortar were the first modes of getting meal. Next was the horse mill. Joshua Caudle had the first one of the latter makeshifts. It was located on his farm, and he not only ground corn but wheat also. He put up a distillery, and for some time manufactured whisky, an article said to have been used extensively as an antidote for snake-bites, but not as a beverage, until the snakes bite (bit?) inside of some men's boots. _____________ Notes for ELIZABETH GREEN: Scottville Township, Panther Creek Cemetery, Section 1 Albert A. The government's summary of the claim indicates as follows: "Bounty Land Division reports service of William Turner in Capt. Ashmon's (Ashmore's) Co. Tenn. Mil from 28 Jan to 19th May 1814, total service 103 days." The widow's application, apparently quoting something her husband had told her, states that "I was in the infantry service. We marched to the Cossee River by land where I was in the Battle known as the Horse Shoe Battle fought on Cossee River. Mrs. Turner's post office is listed on her application as Culleoka, a very small village near the border between Marshall and Maury Counties...From Woodington Gedcom Site by Kenneth P. Woodington. Source of information on this line said to be Rita Davidson according to the Woodington Gedcom site. Also, much of this information is gathered from family tree found on: http://www.gencircles.com (search for Joshua Caudle) Notes for WILLIAM TURNER: Information about William Turner and Martha Christian Caudle's descendants were taken from "FTM Ancestors of John Farnsworth Woodington". Also, from Betty Richardson "Wm. Turner (1792-1865) was a veteran of the War of 1812. He was married to Martha Caudle in 1814 at the home of the bride's father Joshua Caudle. Rebecca Collins, in support of the pension stated that the Caudle home was in Maury County (now part of Marshall) near the old Shiloh Baptist Church. According to the affidavit of Robert Nix the Caudles were members of the Shiloh Church" From the Woodington Gedcom site by Kenneth P. Woodington. Wm. Turner and Martha Christian Caudle were married by Minister Sion Record. Sion Record's estate sale is recorded 31, Dec. 1823 Will Book C-1. p. 112 Maury Co., Tn..attending this estate sale are Joshua Cawdell (Caudle) and Wm. Caudle. Martha C. (Caudle) Turner as a widow filed a brief of claim for a widow's pension. She was living in Culleoka, Tennessee, Maury Co. ( a small village near the border of Marshall and Maury Counties) at the time she filed. William Turner had enlisted on the 28th of January 1814 and was discharged May 10, 1814. He was reported to have served with Capton Ashmons Co. One of the witnesses on the claim was an A. D. Bryant who may be Andrew Daily Bryant of Maury Co. ancestor of James Bryant living in Austin Texas, a fellow genealogist. A statement by Robert Nix supporting the fact that Wm. Turner and Martha were married is included in the claim. Robert Nix is asked by a questioner what he knows about "old Sion Record" His answer is: "He was my Father's Brother." ( Note above Sion Record performed the marriage ceremony for Martha and William.) He also states that Sion Record deceased had at the time of his death, care of the Church at Shilo. He says that Martha and her father, Josuah Caudle belonged to the Church at Shilo. He mentions it was a Baptist Church. Several attest to the marriage of Wm. Turner and Martha Caudle. There is a statement from John M. Hicky, Clerk of the County Court of Maury Co. saying that " previous to 1835 there was no statute authorizing marriage licenses to be recorded and after an examination of the licenses on file in my office between the years 1812 and 1815 I am unable to find a license in the name of William Turner to Martha C Caudle and I further certify that most of the licenses of that date have been lost if ever filed in the office." TURNER: The Turners moved to Texas in 1856, according to his Texas Civil War Veterans' pension application. In the 1860 Texas Census, they appear in Simpsonville, Upshur County with four children, the oldest of whom was Mary (Frances), age 9. I have been unable to find them in the 1870 Texas Census. According to the pension application, they moved to Leesburg, Camp County, Texas in 1877 or 1878. By 1900, as shown in the census for that year, J.C. Turner was living in the household of his son Wiley. J.C.'s occupation is listed as truck farming. He died in 1904 at about age 73, and is buried next to his wife in the Simpsonville Cemetery. His headstone reads "Joshua C. Turner, 2d Lt., Co. D, Crump's Regt. Texas Cav., C.S.A." Note: The 1899 Texas Civil War Pension Application is the most informative document I have yet been able to find. That application is dated August 1899. He lists his age as 69, and states that he is in "feeble" condition due to old age and various illnesses, including chronic diarrhea induced in service. He states that he served in "Company D, W. P. Law's [two illegible words] of Texas," and states that he served three years. He lists his property as "a house and lot in the Village of Leesburg worth $100.00." The application is signed by J.C. Turner, and also has the signatures of the two witnesses, G.W. Hart and William Jefferson Tucker. per Kenneth P. Woodington - Kwoodington@csi.com v. ELIJAH MAC TURNER, b. 1833. 6. P. Green (Samuel's cousin), a G.H. Hilliard (T.P. Green's son-in-law) and others helped to organize the first branch of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Brush Creek Township Illinois. Samuel invited Elder Hunt to Brush Creek in Nov. of 1842 to hold services in a log school house known as Caudle School House. A branch of the church was organized in Dec. of 1842 and continued to hold services in the Caudle School House. This branch never disorganized following the death of Joseph Smith. The log cabin across from The present Brush Creek Church is a replica of the original and was constructed in 1934 in its present location. Samuel, having homesteaded several acres of land, donated the land where the present church, auditorium, and cabins now stand. His home was built on the land now owned by the church where the new dining hall, dormitory, lake and campgrounds are now located. The Caudle home burned in the 1960's. Imojean's parents were among many others that helped in the rebuilding of the cabin. Also helping were the parents and family of Georgia Caudle and Carmen McDonald. Their father owned a saw mill and cut all the logs which were used in the rebuilding of the replica. Samuel lived his entire life on the land he homesteaded [this is incorrect as he was born in TN in 1820 and first appeared in 1830 IL Census per Shirley Miller] and the land was in the Caudle name until the heirs sold the land to Bernard and Marjorie Heller, who held it until the church purchased it from them. Three of Sameul and Lucretia Caudle's children died in infancy. Written by Imojean Caudle, a great granddaughter of Samuel Caudle. Some of the Latter Day Saints moved to Utah, but several soon returned if they could. One such member was Isaac Morris. On his return trip, his wife died and he buried her on the prairie. He was left with two small children. Isaac Morris later married one of Samuel Caudle's daughters, Samantha.
