Concerning the Trail of Tears and Weakley County, I have this about my COOKE ancestors: 1836 According to widow's declaration for pension and War Department records, Hiram W. Cooke served as a Private in Capt. Bradford's Company 1st TN Mounted Militia and I. H. McMahon's Company, Ist TN Mounted Volunteers --enrolled 13 June 1836, mustered in 1 July 1836 at Fayetteville, TN, mustered out with company 17 January 1837 a New Orleans, LA, in the Seminole (Florida) War. He was "appointed Issuing Commissary to Emmigrating Indians at Montgomery, AL, 1 August 1836." (Widow declared he spoke of helping remove Creek indians to the Indian territory - mention of a Colonel Belton or Betton...) 1837 Captain Hiram W. COOK and Newton S. JULIN organized 1837 a company in Weakley County to assist in suppressing the Indian troubles in Florida. 1838 May 29 - Enrolled at Fort Cass as Captain, served to 24 June 1838 3rd Battalion TN Volunteers commanded by N. S. Inlin (sp) and by Henderson Yoacham in the War against the Cherokee Indians. William G.Horton ...stated he had grown up with James [M. Davis] in Weakley County [TN], and that both served in Hiram Cooke's company in 1838 during the Cherokee Disturbance and Removal. brother; Daniel Horton ...Daniel served in Capt.
