"To All Whom this may concern Greeting. I, Sampson Kennedy of the county of Weakley and state of Tennessee being weak of body but of sound mind & disposing memory do make ordain and establish this my last Will and testament hereby revoking all other by me made. First it is my will that after pay all my funeral expenses and just debts of every description the residue of my estate both real and personal shall be disposed of as follows. I give and bequeath to my wife, Nancy Kennedy all my property both real and personal for her use and maintenance for and during her widowhood subject to the subsequent provisions herein made that in case she should again marry then the property both real and personal to be divided equally between my said wife and my surviving children or their legal representatives previous however to the general division the following specific bequests it is my will shall be made and ratified. First, i have given to my son Killebrew Kennedy a horse, saddle and bridle valued at one hundred and twenty five dollars also a cow and calf valued at fifteen dollars. Secondly, I have given my son Nelson Kennedy a horse, saddle and bridle worth one hundred and twenty five dollars also a cow and calf worth fifteen dollars which said give I hereby confirm to them. It is my will and desire that my son Calvin Kennedy shall have when he comes of legal age of twenty one one a horse, saddle and bridle worth one hundred and twenty five dollars which makes my sons equal. I have given my daughter Susan Pentecost, Mahaley Colley and Matilda Moore at the time of their intermarriage with their respective husband each a bed and furniture and a cow and calf which said gives I hereby confirm and it is my will that my two youngest daughters, Nancy A. Kennedy and Aneglena Kennedy shall have each a good bed and furniture therefor and a cow and calf each to be furnished when they arrive at age twenty one years or marry whichever may first occur, this will make my daughters even. It is my will that when my youngest child shall arrive at the age of twenty one years my estate both real and personal shall be equally divided among all my heirs subject to the following provisions and restrictions viz. my wife shall then if living make her election either to take a child's part or to take her third. If she elects to take a child's part then it is my desire and request that she shall make an equal distribution of what may be finally at her disposal amongst all my children before named or their heirs. It is also my will that the part which may be coming upon final distribution of my estate unto Susan Pentecost shall be placed into the hands of my son Killebrew Kennedy and the interest and profit arriving therefrom be applied by him for the benefit of my said daughter and her children and the whole to be finally for the benefit of her and her children. I hereby constitute my son Killebrew, Trustee for that purpose. Finally, I appoint my sons Killebrew Kennedy and Nelson Kennedy Executors of this my last will and I hereby vest in them full power to sell my lands, negroes or whatever else may be necessary for a division of my estate and make title to the purchaser or purchasers without any order of court or decree in Chancery for the same. She married Silas Reuben Moore 1831 in Henry Co., TN, son of John Moore and Abagail Smith. He was born October 27, 1809 in Davidson Co., TN, and died February 11, 1897 in Weakley Co., TN.. Notes for Matilda Kennedy: Silas's wife was named Matilda Kennedy. Living near by, two houses down are two Kennedy families. The first is Kilebrew Kennedy (Canedy) who is between the ages of 30/40. His wife is also 30/40. They have 1 daughter under the age of 5 and three daughters between the ages of 5/10. Because of the ages of the children, I would think that Kilebrew and his wife are closer to the age of 30 rather than older. The second man is Nelson Kennedy (Canedy) who is between the ages of 20/30. His wife is between the ages of 15/20 and there are no children so I believe that he's probably not much more than 20 and his wife is younger. They are probably newly weds. I think these two men are brothers and that they are also Matilda's brothers. The name Kilebrew is also misspelled, it should be spelled " Killebrew". An interesting fact is that a branch of the Blakemore family married into a Killebrew family in this same area. Killebrew Kennedy may have been named after his mother's maiden name. =========================================================================================================== This census is found at Ancestry.com Images on line. Image #1 for Weakley Co. Tennessee. Apparently Matilda is very sick so the children stayed with their older brother, Calvin in a house right next door. Matilda is not with Silas in 1870 and Silas has remarried to a woman named Sophronia. Silas and Sophronia have a baby born in September of 1869, which means that they were probably married no later than 1868. After Silas and Sophronia are married, he has his other children back in his household. The next family listed is the household of Silas and Matilda's son, Calvin S. Moore age 25. There is an older woman listed in his house hold as being an "indwelling" person. Her name is Moriah J. Moore, which should probably be spelled Mariah, she's 60 years old which means she was born in 1800. She is too young to be Silas's mother as she is only 10 years older than him so she could be either his spinster sister there to help out in these troubled times, or she could be the wife of one of Silas's brothers, I'm thinking that she is probably his sister. Silas Moore fathered 16 children. In Silas Moore's will written August 17, 1896 he leaves some inheritance to each child. He was a business man in his will, deducting from the inheritance any money owed him by a child. His signature is written in large script. He started Moore School and probably taught the three (3) "R's" to the tune of a hickory stick. Silas Moore had an uncle names James Moore. ====================================================================== Silas is buried in an old family cemetery near the house he built. Moore all of my real estate consisting of a tract of land lying in the county and state aforesaid and bounded on the North by J. D. Moore, on the E. by county line, S. by Haskins and Bondurant and on the W. by Kennedy and Bondurant on the condition that the said J. B. Moore shall pay to my other heirs herein before mentioned the money will and bequeathed to each of them within the space of two years from the date of my death. I nominate my son, J. B. This is of particular interest because that is the time of the Civil War which began in 1861 and ended in 1865, which leads me to think that perhaps Joseph served in that war. I'll have to check on that. Joseph's brother, Calvin also enlisted with him on September 1, 1863 in the 20th Cavalry as did his cousins, Andrew Jackson Killebrew, who was on roll as 2nd Lieutenant, J. K. Killebrew who received a mortal wound at Harrisburg, John M. Killebrew who was on the roll of prisoners surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama,Calvin Kennedy, who a so received a mortal wound at Harrisburg. Joseph was noted absent on the roll for March/April 1864 with a rank of 3rd Sergeant, "Elected 3rd Sergeant March 1, 1864, Absent Sick April 15, ". Absent on roll for May/June 1864 as 3rd Sergeant, "Sick in Tennessee. Left by permition (sic) from Col. Greer. Elected 1st March unable to travel". The 20th (Russell's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment was also called the 15th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. it was organized on the order of Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest in the reorganization and consolidation of his forces after he was appointed to the command of the cavalry forces in West Tennessee and north Mississippi. Many of the men, including Joseph and his brother Calvin, were members of Greer's Tennessee Cavalry which had been raised within the Federal lines in West Tennessee during the fall of 1863. The Field Officers of this company were Colonel Robert M. Russell, Lieutenant Colonel H. C. Greer, and Major Henry F. Bowman who led Company K which was organized September 22, 1863 at Cottage Grove, Henry County, Tennessee. At the end of the war it was paroled as Co. "D", 19th and 20th. The regiment was placed in Brigadier General Abraham Buford's Division, Colonel Tyree H. Bell's Brigade, where it remained for the balance of the war. This brigade got an early baptism of fire at Okolona, Mississippi February 22, 1864, where they defeated the Federals under Major General Sooy Smith. They engaged the enemy about 10 o;clock am the same day. The fight continued till dark. The next day "we moved back to Tibbee Station. Here we remained for two weeks recruiting our stock. then we started on a forced march of 250 miles for Paducah". In this battle they had three officers wounded, and a total of 21 casualties. Next they fought at Paducah, Kentucky March 25, landing there and attacking at 3 o'clock pm taking the town. The next day they moved back to West Tennessee where it was ordered to Fort Pillow April 12. Fort Pillow was a Confederate-built earthen fortification and a Union-built inner redoubt, overlooking the Mississippi River about forty river miles above Mimphis, Tennessee. In 1864 it was under Federal control under Maj. Lionel F. Booth. Confederate Maj. Gen. N.B. Forrest attacked the fort with a cavalry division of approximately 2,500 men. They seized the older outworks, with high knolls commending the Union position, surrounding Booth's force. The rugged terrain prevented the Federal gunboat, New Era, from providing effective fire support for the Federals. The garrison was unable to depress its artillery enough to cover the approches to the fort. Rebel sharpshooters, on the surounding knolls, began firing into the fort killing Booth. Maj. William Bradford then took over the command of the garrison. The Confederates launched a determined attack at 11:00 am, occupying more strategic locations around the fort, and Forrest demanded unconditional Surrender ( this was the same demand that Gen. Grant had given the Confederate's of which Forrest's men were a part of earlier at Fort Donnelson). Bradford asked for an hour for consultation, and Forrest granted twenty minutes. Bradford refused surrender and the Confederates renewed the attack, soon overran the fort, and drove the Federals down the river's bluff into a deadly crossfire, capturing Fort Pillow. A Field & Stall muster roll for February 5 to April 30, 1864, dated May 13, 1864, gives the station of this Unit as Tupelo, Mississippi. the record of events states that this regiment has been in three separate engagements since its organization at Okolona, Mississippi Feg. 22, 64, at Paducah, Kentucky, Mar. 25, 64 , at Fort Pillow April 12, 64, changing its Headquarters every few days. A muster roll for May/June 1864 shows the station as Tupelo, Mississippi and states: This regiment has been in four different engagements since its organization, had changed its Headquarters several times and marched several hundred miles within the last two months. May 21, at Tupelo, Mississippi, Forrest prepared to go against Federal General William T. Sherman's communications in Middle Tennessee. His plans were disrupted by a Federal expedition under Major General Samuel D. Sturgis into North Mississippi in which Sturgis' much larger Union column was defeated by Forrest at Brice's Crossroads on June 10, 1864. This battle, also known as the battle of Tishomingo Creek, was a brilliant tactical victory against long odds for Forrest and cemented his reputation as one of the foremost mounted infantry leaders of the war. On July 5, 1864, the Federal forces under Maj. Gen. A.J. Smith, advanced south, their mission was to make sure that Maj. Gen. N. B. Forrest and his Confederate cavalry did not raid Maj Gen. . Sherman's railroad lifeline in Middle Tennessee and prevent supplies from reaching him in his campaign against Atlanta. Laying waste to the countryside as he advanced, Smith reached Pontotoc, Mississippi on July 11. Forrest ordered Bell's Brigade, composed of Barteau's, Russell's, Wilson's and Newsom's Regiments, to Ellistown, Mississippi. Bell's Brigade took part in the battle of Harrisburg, where Calvin was wounded. The Confederate forces were under the overall command of lieutenant General Stephen D. Lee. Within two miles of the Federals, on the night of the 13th, Lee ordered an attack for the next morning. Lee attacked at 7:30 am the next morning in a number of uncoordinated assaults which the Yankees beat back, causing heavy casualties, among the wounded was Colonel Russell. At 4;00 am on the morning of August 21, 1864, Maj. Gen. Forrest made a daring raid on Union- held Memphis, Tennessee, but it was not an attempt to capture the city, occupied by 6,000 Federal troops,. The raid had three objectives: to capture three Union generals posted there; to release Southern prisoners from Irving Block Prison; and to cause the recall of Union forces from Northern Mississippi. Striking northwestward for Memphis with 2,0-00 cavalry, Forrest lost about a quarter of his strength because of exhausted horses. Surprise was essential. Taking advantage of a thick dawn fog and claiming to be a Union patrol returning with prisoners, the Confederates eliminated the sentries. Galloping through the streets and exchanging shots with other Union troops, the raiders split to pursue separate missions. One Union general was not at his quarters and another escaped to Fort Pickering dressed in his night-shirt. The attack on Irving Block Prison also failed when Union troops stalled the main body at the State Female College. After two hours, Forrest decided to withdraw, cutting telegraph wires, taking 500 prisoners and large quantities of supplies, including many horses. Although Forrest failed in Memphis, his raid influenced Union forces to return there, from Northern Mississippi, and provide protection so at least that objective of Forrest's was achieved. Forrest captured Athens, Alabama on September 26, and his subsequent raid into Middle Tennessee ending on October 8, when he recrossed the Tennessee River near Florence, Alabama. The regiment was in Buford's Division on this expedition. Buford's Division was a part of Forrest's force in the attack on Paris Landing and Johnsonville, October 30 to November 4. It then joined General Hood's Army of Tennessee for his invasion of Tennessee in the Battles of Franklin and Nashville. General Forrest withdrew into Mississippi after this campaign and on February 13, 1865, ordered all the Tennessee troops in his command to report to Brigadier General W. H. Jackson, for consolidation into six regiments, to compose two brigades. Russell's Regiment was consolidated with Newsom's Regiment, which had been officially designated the 18th, and a few former Tennesseans were added from the 12th Kentucky Cavalry and the Second Mississippi Partisan Rangers. The consolidation was known as the 19th and 20th Consolidated Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, which Colonel Russell commanded. On May 3, 1865, just a few days before the final surrender, this regiment was reported in Bell's Brigade, with 29 officers, 217 men present for duty, aggregate present 283, aggregate present and absent 428. It was paroled at Gainesville, Alabama May, 1865. Civil District of Weakley County, Tennessee as homestead set apart to her out of the lands owned by her deceased husband, Nelson Kennedy, at the time of his death, to the value of $1000.00 and also dower in another tract adjoining said homestead tract that was allotted to her as downer which is also a life estate. Said dower tract being estimated at time allotted to her at $600.00. Said homestead and dower was allotted and set aprt to her by this Court in the cause of J. C. Kennedy et. al vs. Louisa Kennedy et. al. In the said cause the said homestead and dower were estated and the remainder of said lands sold for division. The said lands are farming land and it will be necessary for some one to handle supervision and oversight of the renting and management of the same. The said land were probably be worth about $100.00 per year as rental value. She has some household goods worth about $100.00. Notes for Kinchen Killebrew: Kinchen (Jr), born in 1812, the son of James and Nancy Frizzell Killebrew, was a grandson of Kinchen. James and his family settled in Cottage Grove in the early 1820's when it was part of Henry County and it later became part of Weakley County. The first records I have found of this Kinchen date from 1843, four years after Kinchen's death. He first appears on the 1843 Weakley County tax list with 114 acres worth $230. The deceased was one of the best known men in that section, and the esteem in which he was held was attested by the large number attending the funeral and interment at Blooming Grove last Sunday, services being conducted by Bro. Tom MAYO. Mr. Pentecost was one of those men whom everybody honored and esteemed for his rugged honesty and strict integrity. His word was his bond. He had no enemies.
