Completed obituary information will be updated later. wcp 9/24/10 Russell Meek Jr. Posted: Friday, September 24, 2010 12:24 pm The Messenger, September 24, 2010 James Russell Meek Jr., 90, of the Midway community died Sept. 22, 2010, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Stanley's Chapel United Methodist Church near Union City, with the Revs. Franklin Gardner, Dennis Johnston and Jerry Leggett officiating. Burial will follow in Stanley's Chapel Cemetery near Union City. Pallbearers will be grandchildren and other family members. Friends may call at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin 5-8 this evening. The body will lie in state at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of services Saturday. He was born July 27, 1920, in Obion County, son of the late Lelia (McCrary) and James Russell Meek Sr. He was the widower of Barbara (Bragg) Meek and was a graduate of the former Rives High School. He had been a flight instructor during World War II and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of Stanley's Chapel United Methodist Church and was a retired merchant who had owned and operated the former Midway Grocery. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, James Russell Meek III and Diane Meek of Ducktown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Burnie Powers and Cyndi and David Earls, all of Union City; five grandchildren, Jon Ed Powers, Tripp Powers, Kelley Powers, Joy (Earls) Gurgel and Rebecca Earls; and four great-grandchildren Cameron Powers, Bayleigh Powers, Jon Brayden Powers and Luke Gurgel. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Blount Winter. Joe Billy Younce Posted: Thursday, September 23, 2010 1:09 pm Joe Billy Younce, 74, of Gleason, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010 at his residence. Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Gleason with Bro. Keith Sumner officiating. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery, Gleason. Younce was born July 9, 1936 in Chattanooga, son of the late William Joseph and Erma Arlene Knox Younce. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. and a parts distributor. Survivors include three sons, Tim Younce of Chattanooga, Steven Younce and Tommy Younce, both of Chickamauga, Ga.; one sister, Mary Johnson of Gleason; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hornbeak Funeral Home Chapel, Fulton, Ky., with Rev. David Bayer officiating. Burial was in East Side Cemetery, Martin. Vowell was born Aug. 15, 1938 in Obion County, son of the late Roy C. and Lyvenia Williams Vowell. He worked at the former Fields Ashby Lumber Company in Fulton and the Shoemaker Lumber Company in McKenzie. He was a member of the Fulton Cumberland Presbyterian Church in South Fulton. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mrs. Betty Johnson Vowell of McConnell Community; two sons, Tim Vowell of Union City and Tab Vowell of Jackson; one daughter, Paige Pagter of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two brothers, Jasper Vowell of Fulton and Tab Vowell of Louisville, Ky.; two sisters, Maggie Cummings of Lexington, Ky. and Janie Huddleston Parker of Brentwood; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. "Bob" Jones, 67, of Russell, Minn., 67, died on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, surrounded by family at the Prairie Home Hospice House in Marshall, Minn. A "celebration of life" memorial service for Jones was held Sunday, at the Russell Community Center in Russell. Robert A. Jones was born on March 31, 1943, in Martin, to the late Truman and Bertie Wilburn Jones. At age seven, he moved with his family to Chicago. After his schooling, Bob enlisted in the U. S. Navy. After his discharge from the service, he returned to the Chicago area. In 1972, he was united in marriage to Joy Gronau. The couple made their home in the Chicago area, Martin and in 1982, moved to Marshall, Minn. Jones worked for the Schwan Food Company as a sales person, warehouse manager and later the manager for the Third Party National Warehouse. He enjoyed breeding Arabian Horses, fishing, spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren and watching the food network. He is survived by his wife, Joy Jones, of Russell, son and daughter-in-law, Robert Mark and Victoria Jones of Martin, their children Seth, Asa, Joy and Mary Kate, two daughters and sons-in-law Tamara and Jeff Phortmiller of Chicago, their children Jessica, Ashley and Shelby, and Heather and Shawn Murphy of Charlotte, N.C., a sister Mary Margaret Bouffard of Milan,, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was also preceded in death by siblings Mary, June, Sandra and Tommy. wcp 9/21/10
