I LOVE Cherry Jones. I envy you her friendship and I'm proud to tell anyone and everyone that she's from my neck of the woods. My husband lived a block from the WTC until April of 2001. He would have been crossing West Street on his way to work just as the first plane hit, had he stayed there. A couple of years later, we were back in NYC and went to his apt building to see how everyone there and in his Battery Park neighborhood had made it. They were kind enough to let us go back up to the roof of his building where we looked down into the crater. It was one of the sickest feelings I've ever had. And I want us to remember it so no American ever has to have that feeling again. In a message dated 9/12/2010 10:09:33 A.M. Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Nine years ago yesterday, I was standing on top of an apartment building in Greenwich Village with my friend, Cherry Jones

Russell hustled for jobs to help his family retain their 110-acre farm and when he returned to college, signed up for football. Russell took to the game quickly, lettered in the sport and Lambuth University recruited him on a partial working scholarship. As a 187 pound guard-tackle and sometimes linebacker, Russell's teammates elected him Captain his senior year. He was nicknamed "Mr. Brownie" because he loved chewing "Brown Mule" chewing tobacco. Russell finished his college football career graduating from Lambuth as its Most Valuable Player in 1935. Upon graduation, Russell returned home to Sharon to teach history and coach football. Russell was popular with his students and became principal for Sharon High School. He served the school for 16 years as principal while simultaneously officiating football and basketball games. In 1939, he married Mae Speight. Russell devoted a majority of his great passion for volunteer service to the First Methodist Church in Sharon, teaching Sunday school for generations. Russell's banking career began in 1955 as an assistant cashier with the Bank of Sharon. Russell worked hard, advanced quickly and retired from the Bank of Sharon in 1980 as its CEO. In his retirement, Russell took Mae to see the United States, photographing her in every state except Alaska. The family will receive visitors at the Gardner Funeral Home in Sharon, Tennessee on Friday, September 10, 2010 from 6-8pm. Funeral services will be held at Gardner Funeral Home in Sharon, Tennessee on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 2:00 pm with H. Max Speight officiating. Internment will follow at Tansil Cemetary. Wow Elise, that must have really been horrible! It's good that now you can help others with your pictures and memories. On 9-10-2001 Alyce and I left Craig Colorado and headed home. We had been there to visit our daughter Evelyn and her family. The first night of our journey was spent in North Platte, Nebraska. The next morning, the 11th I had the motel TV on as we were preparing to have breakfast and head out for our next stop, in Western Missouri. Katy Couric was one of the anchors on the Today show at the time, and she interrupted whatever she was doing to tell us that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. Of course all other programming stopped as they tried to report on what they thought was an accident at first. While we were watching the second plane hit, and the realization began to dawn on us and the news crews that this was no accident. We didn't know anything to do but continue toward home, we listened to the radio all day as more details came out. We stopped at Ft. Kearney Nebraska for lunch at the park there, and the clerk had a TV going. She told us of the plane hitting the Pentagon, and we saw horrible scenes of people jumping out the windows of the twin towers. As we continued our journey we heard of the crash in Shanksville, Pa. and wondered what would be next. Of course we thought of the US Capitol, White House, and other large commercial buildings, but thank God, that was the last of the attacks! On thing that really bothered us was they way some merchants along the way seemed to be trying to take advantage of the situation. One gas station where we tried to get gas had raised the price from around $1.75 per gallon to around $4.00. And folks were so scared that they wouldn't be able to get it at any price that there was a line of cars that we didn't see the end of! We passed that one up, and heard on the radio that the governor of the state had announced that criminal charges would be brought against such practices, and by that night the prices were back down to about normal. The next day we made it to my folks' home near Mayfield, Ky., and stayed there a couple of nights. Alyce felt an urgency to get home, and with good reason; when we got home we found that we had been burglarized! So one nightmare was added to another. Do I remember 9-11-2001 and the following few days? You bet I do! We had a commemorative program on that subject yesterday at a Friends and Family gathering at Church. It is obvious that a lot of wounds from that day have healed, and it is equally obvious that a lot have not. We must be very vigilant, and PRAY that no enemy EVER has that opportunity again! ----- Dave in GA. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elise Myers" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 12, 2010 11:09 AM Subject: [TNWEAKLE] My 9-11 Experience Nine years ago yesterday, I was standing on top of an apartment building in Greenwich Village with my friend, Cherry Jones, watching every minute of the tragedy unfold before us. I'm in the process of transcribing some Weakley County Deeds. I'm stumped on interpreting the name of a Weakley County Judge. The given name is definitely William B. The surname may be STASTIN, STARTIN, SLASTIN, or SLARTIN. Does anyone connect with any of these variations? Bob Farmer [email protected]
I remember that morning well....Too well! The image of it has haunted my memory since I first saw it! The TV was on and I saw the smoke coming from one Tower, and then another Plane hit the other Tower and I sat down and stared at the screen! I could not believe what I saw. I began to pray for all the people there, and then tears came to my eyes and it all became blurred! Then I became angry...very angry....I wanted to hurt someone! Just to think about the people that were dying at that moment sent a chill through my soul, and it still does. I watched as first one building came down....then the other! A friend and I went to the Lake that day,Or maybe it was the following day. and I noticed that there were no Planes in the sky either! It was strange to not see or hear an airplane anywhere! A lot of folks around here have private aircraft and they could not fly, because of the situation and all Planes were grounded. I did not feel well for days after that! I was sick to my very heart and soul! It was a terrible day and I shall never forget it. Any red blooded American should not forget it! Our country was under attack and 3000 people had been killed! It was the beginning of a troublesome time that will last many years. My flag was at half staff for days after that. It was half staff yesterday and still is.NEVER FORGET THAT DAY!!...Bud Ray
Also since James Ray is referenced as Jr. Can I assume that Sr. was living at the time of Jr.'s death? <<Cheryl, Thanks thats my Ray connection. I need to compare dates with what I have and see if Alcey is the wife I have for him at the time of death. Do you think I can assume that all of the people mentioned are either children or spouses of children of James Ray Jr. and that no grandchildren are included by name here?>>
