    1. [TNWEAKLE] SOMERS
    2. Jenwyl Pitt
    3. Is anyone on the list researching the SOMERS family? Do you have any pictures of Arden SOMERS (1866-1912) or William Green SOMERS? I have a picture/drawing that my aunt seems to think might be her great-grandfather, William Green Somers (1838-1900). The picture looks more like my uncle's side of the family, but I thought I would check. Thanks for any help, Jen

    1. Re: [TNWEAKLE] Signature Seals
    2. Richard Saunders
    3. The other common convention was to write "L.S." for "locus sigilli." Either "L.S." or "seal" was typically bordered by braces or a frame sketched around it. It is a holdover from earlier British record keeping practice. By the nineteenth century the use of seals had fallen out of use. When you see L.S. or Seal on a document you usually have proof that the item you have in hand is a fair-copy or true-copy duplicate rather than an original document. That is not always true, of course. Sometimes it was used like the printed X on today's documents, a tradition which meant nothing more than "sign here." The best definition is in "Black's Law Dictionary," but workable definitions can be found by searching for "locus sigilli". Richard. I have one document that says " signed with my name and sealed with my seal" The paper documents I see do not appear to have a stamped seal but the word "seal" is always written. Does anyone know if there were physical seals used during that period? If not, what was the legal value of writing the word "seal"? G. 3. Signature seals were often a ring of something similar that would leave an impression in wax. Many used the initials.  These were used to insure the authenticity of the document.  This was continued using a gold seal.  We still use the same idea today with a notary seal.   Most of the documents where you see the word "seal" are copies usually in recorded instruments.  ________________________________ Subject: [TNWEAKLE] Signature Seals In reviewing various documents dated from 1835 through 1885, I note that signatures were usually followed by the word "seal".  I have one document that says " signed with my name and sealed with my seal"  The paper documents I see do not appear to have a stamped seal but the word "seal" is always written. 1. Re: [TNWEAKLE] Mary Louise --- Upgrade from XP
    2. Thomas Johnson
    3. Mary, I also have just purchased a new computer with Windows 7 Home Premium. Like you, I missed my XP. I bought my computer at Best Buy where my grandson is a member of the Geek Squad. He told me that for an extra $100 I could upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium, to Windows 7 Professional edition which has the old XP operating system included with it. XP runs on Windows 7 just like another program. You can run all of your old software, including FTM just like before. It's easy to switch back and forth between Windows 7 and XP and you can copy files from one to the other. Kinda like having 2 computers in one. Not trying to push software . . . just an FYI for anyone having to deal with the new Windows 7 operating system. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Mary Louise Gossum" <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, September 18, 2010 10:53 AM To: <[email protected]> Subject: [TNWEAKLE] Foy > pj, I just updated yesterday from Windows XP and already wish I had it > back. 2. Mary Louise Gossum
    3. pj, I just updated yesterday from Windows XP and already wish I had it back. Hopefully this will go where it is intended .Forgive me if some of your questions regarding the Foys have already been answered. All my old XP mail has not yet been transferred. I answered you yesterday before the transfer but my message has not come up. Maybe I didn't hit the right button to "send". I THINK what I recall saying was that there is a James Foy in Graves Co., KY., age 14 that might be yours. I also recall saying that the Foys are listed as JAY in the Weakley county published 1860 census. My FTM has not yet been transferred from my old computer and I'm not sure when everything will be transferred from old to new so I can't tell you much about what I have on the Foys. I can tell you that if you have Foy ancestors in this area, you may be related to Pat Boone. This past summer I was in a much overgrown Foy cemetery with Nick and Trish Boone in Graves County. I don't recommend going there. It's very overgrown and full of ticks. I didn't get any but Trish got three, one already attached before she found it . Just look in the Graves Co. cemetery books. Mary Louise PS I can tell you that my grandfather's sister-in-law was Etta Foy. I don't recall her parents but they're in my FTM plus more.

    1. [TNWEAKLE] How about you - MORRIS / PASCHALL
    2. I would love to hear from anyone researching either PASCHALL or MORRIS in Weakley Co. My mother's grandfather, Morgan Daniel MORRIS, b.14 Nov 1861, d. 5 Jun 1946 m. Mollie WATSON 31 Dec 1885 in Weakley Co. Morgan Daniel's father was Caleb MORRIS, b. 21 Mar 1829, d. 5 Aug 1913, m. Martha A. PASCHALL around 1849 - 1850. Martha was born around 1829, and died 26 Dec 1894. We have never found any record of Caleb and Martha's marriage, and the only source of info for Martha's last name is family history, once recorded in a family Bible which Mom remembered, but its whereabouts are now unknown. Also, Mom was told that one of her father's grandmothers was 1/4 Indian; the 2 options are this Martha PASCHALL or Sarah Elizabeth LARGENT, who was Mollie WATSON's mother. My research has led me to believe that Martha may be one of the daughters of a John PASCHALL who moved from NC to Smith & Sumter Counties in TN, and later relocated to MS/AL, where he married a WEBB. He may have left his daughters in Smith/Sumter with his brother(s), and reunited with them after this marriage. One census record for one of their children shows that he at least thought his mother was born in AL. Caleb and his father Spencer MORRIS are first definitely identified in Henderson Co TN in the 1850 & 1860 census, and are in Weakley by 1870. Caleb & Martha (PASCHALL) MORRIS's children were: 1. Lucinda E. "Cindy" (S.E. on 1850 census), b. May 1850, m. Henry NEWHOUSE 6 Feb 1873 2. William Allen (went by Allen), b. 25 Dec 1853, d. 4 Jul 1922, m. 1) Susan Francis CANNON 4 Nov 1874, m. 2) Ella DAVIS 3. Nancy Jane (went by Jane), b. Dec 1855, m. Joe PASCHALL 1 Sep 1881 - after Jane died, Joe married one of her nieces, Flossie ESSARY, d/o Eli & Mattie (MORRIS) ESSARY 4. L.A. (Amanda?), b. 1856, d. before 1880? 5. Sarah W. (M.S./Susan on censuses), b. ca. 1858, Mom notes she married a SANDERS or CANTRELL? 6. Morgan Daniel, b. 14 Nov 1861, d. 5 Jun 1946, m. Mary Jane Flora Ruth "Mollie" WATSON, d/o Samuel Allison WATSON and Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Largent, who migrated to Weakly about 1864-5 from Rutherford Co, NC 7. Liza E. "Lizzie" (Eliza on census), b. 1862, m. Kenneth Houston "Hugh" STACKS b. 1861, d. 1938, s/o David STACKS, b. in AL - Mom remembers Lizzie had sons named Frank, Paul, and Silas 8. John H., b. 7 Jun 1866, m. Olzie ?? 9. Martha "Mattie", b. 1868, d. 5/3/1915, m. Eli ESSARY - Eli was killed in a well-digging accident, and their children Flossie, Bertie, Charles, Offie, Irene, and Ted, were split out, some with family members, at least one to an orphanage in Nashville, TN. Mattie was left destitute and lived in a shack at the end of the lane to Morgan Daniel MORRIS's home. This shack was later moved and joined to the house by a breezeway, then used by Caleb MORRIS (father), later Samuel WATSON (father-in-law) till their deaths.
