1876-02-03-NEW ORLEANS TIMES-Louisiana The End of an Old Feud Nashville, Feb 2-In an altercation at Dresden, Weakley county, James Lampkin shot Ben Rogers dead. An old feud.
1872-03-28-SPRINGFIELD REPUBLICAN-Illinois In Weakley county, Tenn., recently, two horsemen, Albert Moore and a Mr. Hill, entered into a religious discussion, the former being a Methodist and the latter a Baptist, but unbaptized. Arrived at a puddle of water, Moore wanted to baptize his brother sinner, and pulled him off his horse into the water, but hadn't the muscle to enforce his kindly piety, and had to give it up. "Now, Moore," said the other, "I'll baptize you, " and he swooped up a hat-full of muddy water on to Moore's head and face. The regeneration thus effected was, however, hardly skin deep, for Moore drew a bowie- knife and began to slash the ecclesiastic. Hill received generous cuts in his legs and arms, and Moore fled the country.
1870-05-26-QUINCY WHIG-Illinois A Man Shoots His Brother Through the Heart At Jacksonville, Weakley county, Tennessee, on the 16th instant, Dan Hill, aged seventeen years, shot his brother, Brock Hill, to death with a pistol. Brock Hill rode the colt belonging to Dan Hill, who so engrage the latter that he swore he would kill his brother on sight. In a few hours Brock Hill returned to the house, the residence of their father, and was met by Dan, who immediately fired upon hin, shooting him through the heart and killing him instantly. The fratricide was arrested and committed to jail to answer the charege of murder. The parties are of good family and well connected. Great indignatuion and excitement was created in the neighborhood on account of the murder. So far from repenting the terrible deed, Dan Hill declares that he does not regret it, and would do so again under like circumstances. The brothers were on good terms up to the time when the sad affair occurred and no reason can be assigned for the rash asct except violent passion and utter recklessness with value of human life, and a total disregard for the natural ties of consanguinity.
1855-06-21-NORTHERN ISLANDER-Michigan ELOPEMENT.-We understand, from good authority, that a Mrs. Potts, wife of a highly respectable citizen of Henry county, has left the bed and board of her husband for parts unknown, with a Mr. Ausbrook, a reverend gentleman. Ausbrook had been preaching in that vicinity, and boarding at Potts' house for several months previous to the elopement.-Dresden (Tenn.) Flag. Let me answer for the benefit of everyone. It depends on what film from the WTHSC you want to see. We have film from all over, including commercial vendors. The film in the room we don't loan but most is available from places that do. If you are looking for public records, then yes, either the FHC libraries near you or a public library from TSLA should be able to order the film as an interlibrary loan (ILL). If you want the Sanborn maps, folks just have to use those here. They are better than a thousand bucks a roll and nigh irreplaceable, although the Library of Congress will loan film as a last resort. Newspaper film is available through ILL from TSLA. If you'll contact me off-list, Lindsay, I'll help you figure out how to get it. Also, we've finally added a printer to the room, so it is equipped with an analog (projection) film reader/printer, a microfilm scanner, and a printer. There simply is no space for a photocopier, nor do I have a budget large enough to support one of those. We do, however, make copies for folks. Richard. I'm hoping that these films are also held in the FHL in Salt Lake, but I'm not sure how to find them on familysearch.org (since they don't seem to appear under a title search and the film number listed is unique to the WTHSC). Ancestry is a private, for-profit venture that capitalizes on the availability of public records. They scan film from public records microfilm from sources like state archives and from National Archives, and they grab selectively from the 4.8 million reels of film made by Mormons as well. As I understand it, their indexing is limited to a single-key transcription with no cross checks, done mostly by transcription sweatshops in India where labour is cheap. That accounts for the relatively high percentage of errors. The difference between Ancestry and FamilySearch is the premise of volunteers. Ancestry charges folks so they can pay transcriptionists. The genius and power of FamilySearch is its double-key and compare functions and the goodness of people like us. Film images are broken into small batches of a few images or pages and sent out randomly to whatever indexer is willing to volunteer their time (indexers choose what records to work on). After they upload the file, the keyed batch files are automatically matched and compared; if no variance is found keyed files (i.e., both typists read exactly the same characters), the batch is queued into the project file. If discrepancies are found, the batch goes to arbitration, a third person with more experience who resolves what has been keyed. It is precisely the same process I used as a textbook production manager years ago. I've been indexing in my spare time for about a year and find it entertaining and relaxing. I highly recommend it to everyone. The link can be found at indexing.familysearch.org. The growing number of completed indexing projects can be seen at www.familysearch.org; look at the way-cool browse function below the search boxes. Seven years ago I was in the office of the guy in charge of microfilming, trying to persuade him to send a representative to a regional professional meeting of archivists. He said that this project was being developed. I was, frankly, skeptical. No longer. Richard.
