My GGgrandfather, Anderson Biggers, first shows up in Weakley Co abt 1840 as a surveyor, married Margaret Bowlin daughter of Wm. Bowlin from Pitsylvania co, VA. Have not been able to find out where he came from, census records say VA, but don't know county. No clue as to his parents. Anderson and Margaret flip floped between Fulton Co, AR and Weakley Co, TN. Anderson died before 1880 census. Any help is appreciated Bobbie Jackson bobjack@cebridge.net
I am really enjoying reading about everybody's daddy........please send yours in........this is really fun......wish I had thought of it before now........doesn't matter where your daddy was from, tell us about him..........pj PS........all after I am half from Mississippi and proud of it but with roots so deep on the other side in Weakley Co and surrounding area..............
My Dad, Eulus Barton, was born in 1905 in Marmaduke, AK. From there, his parents, Fielden Barton (born in 1882 in TN) and Nannie Jenkins (born in Weakley County, TN) moved the family to Coweta, OK. While growing up, Dad didn't have much time for a formal education as he helped his mother make a living on the farm. When he was 16 years old, he went to work full-time in the oil fields; he worked on the casing crews. He drove his own team of horses. He would back the horses up to the boilers and move them from one place to another. Dad farmed and worked in the oil fields of Oklahoma until about 1936. This had provided the family with a good living until the effects of "The Great Depressions" were compounded by the "Oklahoma Dust Bowl." Because of the depression and the severe drought conditions in OK, it was a period of great financial difficulty not just for the Barton family but for most families in America. In an effort to improve conditions for the family, Dad and Mom, moved to California. The family drove to California in a 1931 Buick. They had heard of the "good money" that could be made by following the fruit harvest. They did this for part of one season, but they soon found that this type of life was not for them. They returned to a small town in the center of the California. So many people were moving to California in order to escape the great poverty of the East that there was no housing to be found. The family lived in a tent until they could secure a place to live and Dad worked for anyone and everyone who would give him a days work. He finally found steady work on a farm. After that he leased property and farmed for awhile. Mom and Dad raised five children. After he retired, Dad and Mom bought a house and moved into town. Even though Dad had "retired," he never completely gave up working. He loved what he did for a living. He loved working the land and watching the crops grow. In fact, he worked the day he died. He is remembered by his children as being physically strong (he could pick up the back-end of a car) and though slow to anger, he would go to battle for anyone he felt had been wronged. His presence made his children feel safe no matter what other conditions might exist. He was a family man whose free time was spend with his family rather than in personal pursuits. He was also a very giving man. He would give his last $5.00 to anyone he though needed it more than he did. He was well known and loved by the people in the community as was evidenced by the number of people who attended his funeral. The Chapel was overflowing with people standing inside along the walls and outside in the vestibule. He has been gone for many years (he died in 1971) but he is still greatly missed. It has really been interesting, at least to me, to track my family from the East (South Carolina, to Tennessee, to Oklahoma and all the way to California) as they made their own personal Westward Movement which was began by my great-great grandfather John T. Barton in South Carolina in 1818. P. S. I am so glad that my grandfather, James Barton, slowed down long enough along the way to meet and marry my Weakley County granny. I love having this connection to Weakley County and with all the wonderful people who live there. Out of all the state and county genealogy sites I have visited, this is the bestest with the mostest. My daddy's name is Edwin Charles "Charlie" Forrest , he was born Oct 25, 1928. in Springfield Louisiana Daddy always thought his name was Charles Edwin Forrest Jr , until at age 16 he went to enlist in the service, and that's when they found out the doctor/midwife had put down the wrong name on the birth certificate! He wasn't able to join the service either, because at that time you had to have your parents signature, and his brother Hines Everitt , told Grandma if she signed him up , Uncle Hines would never come home again ( Uncle Hines was already in the service and didn't want his baby brother getting hurt) Daddy had left home at the age of 12 , to live with his older sister, his father Charles Edwin "Ned" Forrest was not a nice man. Daddy tells us stories of hunting alligators , mind you dad always has a tendency to exaggerate some , so we always looked to my mom when he was telling one of his stories. If mom gave the nod of approval you knew the story was true :) Speaking of mom, Dad meet my mother Sarah Jane Alice "Sally " White b. Dec 7 1931 Brooklyn NY , by a strange twist of fate. Mom left home at age 15 from NY and traveled south with friends , she had only been there for 2 weeks when she was struck and hit by a car , she was in a coma for 2 weeks , and a body cast for almost a year. That Dec (1947) a lady mom met in the hospital invited mom home for Christmas knowing mom had no family in Louisiana. Mom got the doctors ok , and hobbled out of the hospital for a day outing on crouches (at this time she only had one remaining cast on her leg) Mrs. Martin took mom over to visit her next door neighbor Mrs. Agnes Bourgue, who had 2 teenage sons ( one was very good looking according to mom) Shortly after their arrival , Agnes's teenage brother pulls up on his motorcycle. He had just got off of work and was very dirty( he was a roofer) Mom was very brassy and flirting with all the boys , so when they got ready to leave , she asked the sons if they wanted to see their Uncle blush. She walked up to the Uncle and asked for a kiss for Christmas , thinking the southern boy would tuck tail and run blushing away. She was in for a shock , because he DID kiss her. And left HER blushing, he then walked into the house and said "That one I will marry" Their courtship consisted of him visiting her daily at the hospital , and just how did he propose you ask? He told her that his newphews wanted to know when she was going to become their Aunt :) Daddy has always been a hardworking man , he started roofing as a small boy , worked a brief time on a drag line crew, until the boss wanted to go non - union , and daddy was having none of that! He came north to Michigan picking crops for cash , were he and the family settled in 1954. His first winter in Michigan he said "If God lets me make it through this winter I will NEVER see another one!" He saw over 50 more Michigan winters. As a young man dad went back to doing the trade he knew best , which was roofing , and its from that trade that he finally retired from in 2004. Even though mom and dad had lived in Michigan for over 50 yrs , Louisiana was still "Home" So when mom's cancer came back inoperable a year ago May , she wanted to go "Home " one last time. Dad lost his soulmate on July 7th 2006 after 58 yrs of marriage. Dad hasn't been back to Michigan since, opting to remain in Louisiana. My daddy will be 79 yrs old this year. And I love him dearly. His name was Harry Milburn Hall, the son of Seward Henry Hall and Mary Emma Gardner. His brother was Fred and his sister was Grace Bell Hall Gibbs. Her husband, Frank, owned the drug store on Martin's main st, with the doctor's office above. After some time, my grandfather moved his family into Martin, where he had business enterprises. My father was born in 1887 in Gardner, Tn. in the beautiful white two story house that sits on the corner of Gardner Rd. and the old highway to Union City. In those long ago days, Gardner was larger than Martin and much farther away from Martin. Civilization has married the 2 cities today. He died in 1954, way too soon to suit me, for he was such a special man. Although he left Weakley County, when he was about 21 years old, moving to Memphis, where he was a prominent business man, being a Realtor and land developer, he maintained many ties with Weakley until after his father, brother and sister died. After that, life caused my family to lose touch. Now I am learning more and more about life in Weakley, which makes me understand why my family did certain things. I have found everyone there so helpful, kind and generous. I will visit his grave today. I hope, today, all of you have wonderful memories or express your appreciation for your father in person. Happy Father's Day to all the men out there............ Tell us about your daddy........... My Daddy was my Knight in Shinning Amour ..........I thought he hung the moon..........he was a very good, honest, caring, helping and loving man..........Paul Revere HOWARD b 20 Jan 1906 in Lafayette Co, Ms was a medic in WWII so he became the "country doc" in the neighborhood around here............he gave shoots, dressed wounds, sit with the sick or whatever was needed he would do.........of course he worked other than that but it seemed he was always helping someone in need as well as my Mama was............ I followed my Daddy all over the place ...........I would walk with my fingers in his back pocket and never once did he ever tell me to get away............how many men would do that this day in time? I just wish everyone could have had a loving home with two loving parents like I did........... Yes, my Daddy was from Mississippi and my Mama from Weakley Co, Tn. (same house I live in today)........How did they meet? Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tn. in 1947 when my granddaddy, William "Lee" JONES was a patient there in the room with none other than Grooms HERRON, daddy of our own list members, Ben and Dean.........isn't it a small world? My daddy died 10 July 1992 but I miss him as much to this day as I did that day..............you might say that I was a Daddy's girl.........but then I was a Mama's girl and a Mama JONES's girl also!!!!!!!!!!! pj
D C P Finch and Mellisa are in the 1850 Weakley Co., TN 10th Dist. Census with dau. spelled Lusta age 2. household #47. Next door in hh #48 is D. The children she has are the same as some entries on World Connect listed as LUMSDEN. If this is correct Melissa's maiden name may be Derryberry not Lumsden. I'm distantly related to some of the FINCH family from Henry County, TN but I haven't had a chance to do a lot of research on them. I DO, however, have some info on those from Henry that I'm more than happy to share with you. It wouldn't surprise me if some of my FINCH's came from Weakley, as many of my other family members seemed to keep the roads worn between Weakley and Henry. The LUMSDEN name does not ring any bells for me, though. Virginia Craig Beeman <omb@ponyexpress.net> wrote: "Hello possible Cousins!" Does anyone out there recognize the family of : 1. Demosthenes P. I know it's Saturday but we need life in this list........at least I almost feel like living today! I spent from 8AM until 6:30 PM in the dentist chair Wednesday the 13th.........let's just say I have been in the bed!!!!!!!!!! I remember hearing the dentist say to Ralph that not many people would have the guts to do what I done that day.........no I was not put to sleep...........I was worked on all but overall about an hour of that time.........I only got up twice to go to the bathroom, other than that, I was there............ Garry Brown called to see about me, his remarks to me were "You sound awful"...........hehehehe, I was.........for once in my life I have not talked much, it hurt far to bad to even fuss with him........... Ok, enough about me..........let's do some genealogy around here in Weakley, what you say? Who are you looking for? Who is that one ancestor if you had a chance to sit down with them for an hour, would it be? I am afraid, even though the McCLAIN family is my passion, it would have to be my great great grandmother Dorcas HOWARD...........SO many unanswered questions........but next in line would be Charles McCLAIN for sure.........he was an original to Weakley Co, signing the petition along with son John.........I have hope for finding this family but none for finding the family of Dorcas..........was she married or was she herself a HOWARD ??????????? Let's hear from all of you out there............pj PS........be sure to give dates, times and places..........don't do like I did..........hehehehe.......

William is the s/o Alexander Sandy Campbell and Elizabeth Parker, g/s/o Alexander Campbell and Sally Pate. Lawrence William Campbell was born in TN., on February 14th. The year most likely was 1884, but could have been 1886 or 1887. Jasper and Jennie Pope of McKenzie, TN adopted or took guardianship of Lawrence at the age of 9 months.
