    3. I have a picture of my great-grandfather, William Wesley Parham, most likely taken close to the end of his life. He died in 1913 so I know it was before that, but I'm assuming after 1900. The back says "J P Brooks & Bro. Photographers, Sharon Tennessee". Has anyone ever heard of this photographer or know what might have happened to the business? It seems like I remember someone on this list having a book about Sharon. I wonder if J P Brooks & Bro. might be mentioned in it. Thanks, Jenwyl

    1. Re: [TNWEAKLE] Harvie Hillis marriage look up
    2. Hi Cheryl, I can't be sure this is the family you are searching for, but it is the closest marriage record I was able to find in Weakley County. According to the 1910 census, they say they have been married for 34 years, which would make the year 1876, instead of 1874. Marriage records, 1843-1917 Weakley County (Tennessee). County Court Clerk W. H. HILLIS Spouse: J. A. E. HARRISON Marriage: 30 SEP 1874, Weakley, Tennessee On the Weakley County web site, the District Map for 1920 shows District 22 being around the Greenfield area. I don't know if there was a district change between 1910 and 1920, so someone with better information might be able to confirm if it was the same in both decades. Good luck. Peggy M. 3. District 22 of Weakley County was formed from the 9th District sometime between 1880 and 1900. Willis Harvey Hillis married Julia Ann Harrison 9/30/1874. He was a Confederate Veteran. They had a son William Grant Harrison. I can't imagine that he named him for General Grant since he was a Confederate Soldier. 3. I have this in the notes of Thomas Jefferson Brooks who had a son named James Percy Brooks. Since this Thomas was buried in the MT. Vernon Cemetery near Sharon this may be the one. In 1850, listed in his father's houshold in Weakley County, TN. In 1860 and 1880, listed in his widowed mother's household in Weakley County, TN. In 1900, listed as Thomas J. Brooks with wife, children, 2 sisters, and a brother in Weakley County, TN. In 1908, his sons Percy and Arthur ambushed and killed a man named Tade Innis, who had shot and injured Thomas' brother Polk Brooks 2 years earlier. Thomas is supposed to have used his influence to sneak his sons out of the country and they were never heard from again. In 1910, listed with 2 daughters and his brother Polk Brooks in Weakley County, TN. Buried at Mt . Vernon Cemetery, Weakley County, TN. 1. [TNWEAKLE] Daddy Walter
    2. I always thought or my grandfather as my father when I was growing up, I lived with my grandparents from the time I was in the 9th grade and even after I got out of the Marines and started to school at UT Martin. Walter Marion Killebrew my grandfather was my hero, my idle and the best person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Always known as Daddy Walter to all his grandsons. Daddy Walter had no formal education and Mildred always made out the payroll for him. I often wondered why. I was probably 14 or 15 years old before I found out he didn't read or write very well. Somehow he educated himself because later on in life I would noticed him setting on the front porch smoking a cigarette and reading the newspaper. Walter built roads, airports and did a lot of sodding on golf courses. Walter was never home, always on the road. No one was close to Walter, he kept to himself and never had much to say to anyone. He had a couple of friends that I knew of and that was about it. Walter had only one eye, he was born with a very large birthmark on the right side of his face and never had sight in that eye. He always drove an old pickup truck and I can still see him in that truck with a cigarette in his mouth and wearing an old straw hat. Walter was a chain smoker until the day he died. For a long time he rolled his own but later in life he started smoking store bought cigarettes as he would call them. Daddy Walter taught me how to drive his old black pickup truck and I remember I was young enough that he had to put wooden blocks on the clutch and brake pedal so I could drive. I never drove on the street or highways only in the fields. When I drove with him he would let me roll his cigarettes and I would hand it to him and he always struck a country match on the dashboard. I recall thought that it was a big deal that he would let me roll his cigarettes. Guess I have to tell this story. I have already stated he was blind in his right eye. In 1944 he was visiting his son Ralph in Benton Ky. Walter and Mildred got ready to leave and Walter backed his truck in a ditch, got out to see if he could get out and with Ralph pushing on the truck he got out and went on his way. What he didn't know that Mildred got out to take a look and when Walter got out of the ditch she was standing by the truck. It was over 30 minutes before he found out she wasn't in the truck. His only comment was "I had never heard her go that long without talking". To this very day I miss Daddy Walter, I miss the fishing trips, I miss going out to the sod fields in that old pickup truck that he taught me to drive. I miss going to the pool hall and him letting me shoot pool while he drank a beer. If my grandmother had ever found that out, Daddy Walter and myself would have been in a heap of trouble. As I said "Walter Killebrew was the best person I ever had the pleasure of knowing". Bob Killebrew </HTML>

    3. Happy Fathers day to everyone from Bud Ray here in Mt Morris Michigan! I will tell you a little bit about my Father. He was born in Sedalia Ky on April 7th 1908, and moved to Weakley Co. when he married my Mother in 1937. He was good to me and everyone else. He worked for just pennies a day back in the depression years. I was born in 1940, and do not ever remember having to go Hungry, but he told me about the hard time days, and how he and all other working men hated Herbert Hoover! I wish I could speak with him for a while. I have some Genealogy questions to ask. He was saved by the Blood of Jesus just as I am , so I will speak with him later! Ya'll have a good day where ever you are. It's 87 degrees here in Mt Morris Mi. The sun is at it's best. ..Bud Ray

    1. [TNWEAKLE] My Dad . . . Homer Coleman Johnson
    2. Thomas Johnson
    3. My dad, HOMER COLEMAN JOHNSON, was born on December 20, 1888 in Clarksville, Red River County, TX. the son of Wiley Elijah Johnson and Virginia Lee Smith. My grandfather, Wiley Johnson was raised in Weakley County, the son of John Philip Johnson and Eliza Jane Reddick. After the birth of my dad the family moved from Red River Co, TX to Garretts Bluff, Lamar Co, TX, and around 1899 or 1900, when dad was 11 or 12 years old, the family moved to the town of Antlers, in Indian Territory (OK). Not a lot is know about my dad's childhood. According to a 1905 article in the Antlers News, he won first prize at a Pound Party, for "putting the mule's tail to the mule when blindfolded." He graduated from Antlers highschool in 1906 at the age of 17. Another article lists him among the attendees at "Grand Rolling Party," (skating party) in 1908. Homer was married twice, first on March 28, 1909 in Antlers, to Claudie Raley. They had four children; Homer Coleman; Harry Lincoln; Virginia Lee; and Raymond, all deceased. The marriage notice in the paper said he was Deputy County Registrar of Deeds. The 1910 census lists him as the assistant cashier at the Antlers Bank. He was living in Amarillo, Texas on June 5, 1917 when he registered for the WWI draft. His registration form said he was a Bookkeeper, working for the Amarillo Hardware Company, married with 2 children, had served 3 years as a Corporal in the Oklahoma National Guard and was of medium build, slender, blue eyes, and light hair. I'm not sure when, but at some point he attended Hills Business College in Oklahoma City where he earned a degree in business administration. When he met Alberta (my Mom), she was working as a cashier at Kaufman's, a ladies store in Oklahoma City and he was manager of the shoe department. She always said that he was a terrible person to work for . . . "every time I tied some string around a shoe box he would holler at me for using too much string." But, I guess things got better because on February 13, 1932 he was married to Alberta Maude Parker, daughter of Albert and Maude Parker. The Kaufman shoe department was owned by th Wahl Shoe Company of St. Louis. When Kaufman's went out of business he continued working for the Wahl's as a traveling salesman traversing the entire state on mostly unpaved highways in a Model-A Ford, selling shoes to retail stores. Homer and Alberta lived their entire lives in Oklahoma City where they raised eight children; Thomas Coleman, b. May 26, 1933; Richard Wiley, b. Nov. 17, 1934, d. Feb. 3, 1987; Michael R., b. Feb. 27, 1936, d. Feb. 9, 1978; Sandra Jean, b. Nov. 19, 1937; Dennis Lee, b. Nov. 5, 1940; Jerry Franklin, b. Nov. 3, 1943; Nancy Sue, b. Jan. 8, 1946; and Theodore Joseph, b. Sep. 9, 1947. Both worked hard to provide for the family. She was a seamstress and homemaker, and he spent over 40 years of his life working for the Lazrus brothers, owners of the ladies shoe departments at Rothschilds department store and Peyton-Marcus ladies ready-to-wear store in Oklahoma City. He was a buyer and department manager at both stores. During that time he never took a vacation and I don't ever remember him taking a day off sick. Dad loved baseball. In the summertime he would listen every evening to the baseball game on the radio (the Oklahoma City Indians). Occasionally he would take me on the streetcar to see a ball game at the old ballpark at N.W. 2nd and Virginia in OKC . . . what a treat that was. He also loved fishing, but seldom had time for it. We would go occassionally to Belle Isle Lake or Lake Overholser. We would get on the streetcar early in the morning with our cane poles and a couple of sandwiches and spend the day sitting on the bank. We never really caught much of anything, but he always seemed to enjoy it. In 1951 dad bought the first car our family ever had. It was a brand new Ford hardtop. He never drove though, mom was always the chauffeur. The thing he enjoyed most in his later years I think, was his grandchildren. He loved having them around. He also enjoyed an occasional trip or just a Sunday drive in the country. He made several trips to Florida and Minnesota, mom driving of course, and he and mom went with Wanda and I on several vacation trips after he retired. There's not enough room here for me to tell all of my stories about Dad. Like everyone, he had some faults, especially in his younger days, but he was a loving, kindhearted man, a wonderful father, a good provider, and he loved his family dearly. Looking back, I guess we were poor, but we certainly never knew it. We always had a roof over our head, food to eat (lots of beans, fried taters & corn bread), clothes to wear (mom made most of them) and some toys on birthdays and at Christmas time. It was truly a great childhood. In 1947 dad bought us a new home, the first he ever owned. It had a living room, kitchen, bath and 2 small bedrooms. He and mom raised 8 kids in that small home. It was crowded but we had lots of fun. Homer Coleman Johnson died on December 23, 1975, three days after his 87th birthday. He is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City.

    3. My dad was Aaron Andrew SIMMONS, b. March 23, 1905 in Rives, TN -- just over the Weakley Co. line into Obion Co. He was the son of Andrew M. SIMMONS and Sarah Elzada HILL. He grew up on a farm in Dist. 7 (Obion Co.) and married a Weakley Co. girl, my mother, Lillian May CLINARD, Dec. 26, 1925. They were married on a street corner (Mill St., I believe) in Martin by my dad's uncle, Benjamin P. SIMMONS, a Baptist minister. My mother said the marriage took place right outside Uncle Ben's house, and, later, she wondered why they hadn't gotten married inside. She said she was too scared to think about that at the time since she was only 15. As a married couple, they lived in Weakley Co. My dad worked for Dutch Barger who owned a cotton gin in town. In 1943, Daddy entered the Army and served in the Pacific theatre ("Battles and Campaigns" on discharge: Luzon and New Guinea). After the war, he came back home to Martin and, at some point, began working for a farm implement company which I believe was also owned by Dutch Barger. Over the years, there were several owners -- J. D. Gill, Frank Dodd, John Vincent and Herbert Thompson. I'm not sure if it's still called Vincent Implement Co., but that's what it was when my dad retired around 1967 due to a heart condition. Daddy was an agricultural mechanic, and, by all accounts (not his own) a good one. Some of my best memories of fun times with him are of going with him on trips he made out of town to nearby communities to repair a farmer's tractor or other farm equipment. When it was close to lunch time, we'd stop at a country store somewhere along the way and pick up a box of Saltines and some bologna, Cokes for each of us and maybe some sort of snack cake for dessert. Then we'd have a bit of a picnic. What a treat for me! Better than any meal in a fancy restaurant. While he repaired a tractor, I'd usually play with the farmer's children. Those were long, lazy, wonderful summer days, and what a great dad he was to bother to take his little girl with him on those trips. He was a talented singer and musician, and I'm sure my love of music came from him. He had a great voice and also played the guitar and harmonica. My mother and dad and I spent our Sunday afternoons after church singing hymns while Daddy played guitar. He was a wonderful father and a good Christian man. He died Jan. 6, 1985 and is buried in Eastside Cemetery in Martin. I'll always miss him. Thanks for the opportunity to honor him on this Father's Day. Brenda Simmons Gartside in Canada

    3. My Daddy, Alvis David Ray, was born in Sedalia, Ky. on Feb. 11, 1911. His parents were Robert Luther (Bob) Ray and Virginia (Jennie) Lou Suggs. He and Mom married in May 1937 near Cottage Grove, Tn. He has told me of share-cropping, and of working on a farm for 50 cents a DAY, not 50 cents an hour! When I was about 4 we lived on a farm outside Martin Tn., owned by a man named Major Vowell. He furnished us a small house, and I think this is where Daddy did the share-cropping, I'm not sure of that. Later we moved to Mayfield, Ky., where I grew up. Daddy only had a 4th grade education, so he never had a high paying job, nor an easy job. He worked at the clay pit near Pryorsburg, Ky. for some time, until he was laid off. While he was laid off he was at the RR track in Mayfield, near our rented house, picking up coal that had fallen off the trains and trucks, to give us some heat in the house. As he was picking up coal, a Mr. James Wheatley came along and saw him. Mr. Wheatley owned a coal company in town! Dad thought he would be arrested for stealing coal, but instead, Mr. Wheatley gave him a job! I remember Daddy working for him for many years, 6 long days per week at $36.00 per week, then for another coal company later. He was a small man, 5'7", but was really strong! Shoveling that coal into and out of that old Dodge pickup really put the muscles on him! Somehow he and Mom raised 5 kids on the meager salary that Dad received, though my youngest brother came after I wa! s in the army and away from home. To this day when I occasionally look into my wallet and find that I have $36.00 I remember Daddy! The thrift and savings I learned in those days has served me well over the years, helping me to have a perspective on life that I would not have had if times had been better. On of Daddy's expressions was "I'm tard, T-A-R-D! and that is why my email address is what it is. We were poor, but never knew it until years later. Dad lost his life to a drunk driver at the age of 85. He became a Christian late in life, at the age of almost 78, and I'm so glad that he did! Now I know I will see him again!!
