    3. After poking around online, I'm wondering if there's a possibility that C. H. HATLER in actual images of the 1850 census, might have been E. H. HATLER (Dist. 4, Household 109). If you have access to this census, would you be able to check that for me? Thanks very much. 1. Re: [TNWEAKLE] Milner History
    2. David Duncan
    3. Hello Brenda, Beginning with the clarification posted by Leonard Milner of DeBrary Fl..... "..The L. Milner in the 1850 Census is William Leonard Milner, son of William and Nancy Edmunds Milner. He married Elizabeth P. Ray in 1827 in Halifax County, VA............. After Leonard's death, Elizabeth married William Jones in 1854 in Weakley Couty.......". I did find a marriage record of William Jones and Elizabeth P. Milner, "Tennessee Marriages, 1851-1900", Ancestry.Com, showing marriage date of 15 June 1854, in Weakley Co. So, based on this and above paragraph, the maiden name of William's second wife, prior to her marriage to Leonard Milner, was Ray. She was born in 1810 in Virginia. In the 1850 census, William Jones is listed as a widower, age 60, in CD 3 of Weakley Co. In the 1860 census, he is listed as age 70 with wife Elizabeth, age 50, seemingly Elizabeth P. Ray Milner Jones, and her son by prior marriage, George Milner, age 16. This is in CD 14 of Weakley Co. In the 1870 census, Weakley Co., shows William Jones, age 81, E. P. Jones, age 61 (Elizabeth's middle initial was P.), and Rebecca Jones, age 20. (The Ancestry.Com census image appears to be a "P" as opposed to an "F"). This and the ages and civil district seem to support that this William Jones married the widow Leonard Milner, Elizabeth P. Ray Milner. Having said this, if your William's first wife Rebecca died in 1850, prior to the census, and Elizabeth married William Jones in 1854, I don't see any reason why your William and "our" William are not one in the same. Rebecca Jones could well be his granddaughter by his first marriage. In the 1860 Weakley Co. Census, there is a Rebecca Jones, age 11, in the HH of A. I. (J?) Jones, or Andrew Jackson Jones....middle initial looks like a J in the census image. (At least census taker made all his other "J's" like the letter interpreted as an "I"). It would seem only logical that Rebecca moved in to take help care of her grandfather. Also, look at the size of Andrew Jackson Jones' household. A I Jones 40 Angeline Jones 33 Tienmorth Jones 22 William Jones 21 Vandelia Jones 19 Rebecca Jones 11 Paradine Jones 8 James B Jones 3 May E Jones 21 George Johnson 35 Susan Johnson 30 Isaac Johnson 10 Ancestry.Com Source Citation: Year: 1860; Census Place: District 17, Weakley, Tennessee; Roll: M653_1278; Page: 489; Image: 359. The E. F. Jones you list in CD 3 is a different individual than Elizabeth P., wife of Leonard Milner who was alive in the 1850 census: Leonard and Elizabeth are listed together with their children in CD 9 in 1850 in Weakley Co. including George Milner, then age 6, who is listed with William Jones and Elizabeth in the 1870 census. It seems to me that the William Jones we are both talking about are the same person. I hope this helped clarify the issue. I would be interested in learning more about the Jones family in CD 3, as my Fields relatives also lived in that area. Thanks, David Duncan -----Original Message----- From: tnweakle-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tnweakle-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of B Gartside Sent: Wednesday, July 04, 2007 6:48 PM To: tnweakle@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNWEAKLE] Milner History I think I may have missed something. Could you clarify the information about William Jones, please? What was the maiden name of Elizabeth whom you mention as having married William Jones? I've always thought it possible that the JONES household in the 1870 census you mentioned was that of my ggg grandfather, William JONES (first wife - Rebecca Unk. d. 1850), and that the Rebecca in the 1870 census was his granddaughter, Rebecca (b. c1850) daughter of his son, my gg grandfather, Andrew Jackson JONES. I have deed of gifts records that show "my" William JONES giving slaves to his grandchildren, and since he was a slaveowner, that's the main way I've been able to distinguish him from other William Joneses in the county in the same time period, BUT I don't have a proven death date for him. In the 1850 Weakley Co. TN Slave Schedule, he owned, at least, 13 slaves and was in Dist. 3. 1850 Weakley Co. TN Mortality Schedule shows: E. F. I'd appreciate any information or input. I understand that you're not a JONES researcher, but I'm hoping that even the maiden name of the Elizabeth you mentioned might help me sort out this census. 2. Peggy & all, I found what I was looking for, and thought others on the list might be interested. The genealogy software I had on my old computer was Personal Ancestral File, or PAF. I'm downloading the latest version, 5.2, right now. I never started my own family file, but found this software to be great for viewing other files I downloaded from Rootsweb, etc. I have no basis for comparing it with other software, but it's free and available online, which is what I was looking for. I found it at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp?Page=home/welcome/simplePAFRegistration.asp if anyone else is interested. 1. [TNWEAKLE] BEST WISHES TO THE LIST
    2. Bud - I'll be celebrating from my backyard also; that just happens to be Corpus Christi Beach. These Texans don't care how many bans they put on fireworks... they are gonna light 'em up anyhow! Always a great show, and with a view to the Bayfront display also. I finally got through the 288 E-mails that were waiting for me on my return from a week-long vacation to IL for Family Reunion of the Schorfheide cousins. Only one aunt is left from my dad's generation, and she was determined that us "kids" should re-start the tradition. Best was seeing my old "kissin cousin" David, after missing each other for at least 35 years. pj - I shudder to think what I would have missed if I had tried to un-join the list temporarily. What a great idea you had while I was driving from TX to IL by way of OK!! Next year I'm gonna plan my trip by way of TN, and stop by to see if you have anything on my families in your folders. I was thinking of stopping on my way back this time, but couldn't count on the weather. Anybody that's still reading this and knows where the free genealogy software can be found online, please let me know. Maybe now that my Inbox is empty I can start my own file. 2. Debbie Fields Murphy
    3. So your opinion , would you contact them or not? Deb I would contact them, BUT leave it so its totally up to them whether to ever contact you or not... I recently reunited two half sisters (oldest and the youngest - my half great aunt) who had not seen each other since the youngest was 3 days old. It turned out that the older sister had been looking for her youngest half sister for years but had been brushed off when she tried to contact 2 bitter old elder women members by marriage of my half great aunt's father's birth family and had assumed she wasn't wanted or welcome....when she moved back to NC in the mid 1980's. My youngest half great aunt didn't even know this oldest half sister even existed (as well as 2 more all ready deceased, since the family was split up when their mother died in 1930 right after the birth of my youngest great aunt and the oldest was sent back to live with her father's people. And then my half great aunts' father (my great grandfather) died 17 days later... Just be prepared for anything! There may be more skeletons in your family closet uncovered OR it may NOT be your Uncle Bobby, but just a coincidence! I ran across two women with the same name and death date and place of death once, but they were 2 different women when I finally got their obits! 1. [TNWEAKLE] KILLEBREW'S
    2. THE KILLEBREW FAMILY We will start off with the history of the Killebrew name. The Ancient History of the Distinguished Surname **KILLIGREW** Cornwall, with its rugged cliffs and bleak wind-swept moors is home to the distinguished surname Killigrew and its history is richly interwoven into the rich fabric of the ancient chronicles of that county, famous not only for its tin mines but for being one of the earliest trading partners of the Biblical Phoenicians about the time of Christ. Cornwall emerged about 300-400 A.D., as the nation of Damnovia, or Dumnonia, the land of the southern Welsh. Included within the Cornish perimeter were parts of Devon and Somerset, even Wiltshire, a nation forced into the south-western most peninsula of England by the Saxons. But the indomitable Cornish people resisted. It was not until 926 A.D., almost 600 years later, that they were defeated by the Saxons. The first record of the name Killigrew was found in Cornwall where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. Many spelling variations of the name were found in the archives researched. Although your name, Killigrew, occurred in many references, from time to time the surname was spelt Killigrew, Kiligrew, Killigroue, Killegrew, Killigrave, and these changes in spelling frequently occurred, even between father and son. Scribes and church officials spelt the name as they thought appropriate. It was not uncommon for a person to be born with one spelling, married with another, and yet another appeared on his headstone. The surname Killigrew emerged as a notable English family name in the county of Cornwall where they were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated with manor and estates in that shire. They were first recorded as being Lords of the manor of Cheligrevus in the parish of St. Erme in Cornwall about the 12th century. By 1350 they had also branched to Arwennick in the same county. For the next two or three centuries the surname Killigrew flourished locally in Cornwall. During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries England was ravaged by religious conflict. The newly found passionate fervour of Cromwellianism, and the Church rejected all nonbelievers. And the Roman Church still fought to retain its status. Cornwall was strongly Methodist and fervently loyal to the crown of England. Cornish and Devon people along with settlers from the Channel Islands formed much of the population of Newfoundland on Canada's east coast. Newfoundland was a like climate, and the almost exclusive livelihood was from fishing. The surname Killigrew was amongst the many who were freely "encouraged" to migrate to Ireland, or to the "colonies." In Ireland they became known as the "Adventurers for land in Ireland." Essentially, they contracted to keep the Protestant faith, being granted lands for next to nothing, lands which had been previously owned by the Catholic Irish, so long as they "Undertook" to stay Protestant, and to ensure their employees did likewise. In Ireland they settled in county Connacht, adopting the name Kilgrove, Killegrew, and Kilgrave. During our review, researchers took the opportunity of determining the most ancient grant of a Coat of Arms to this distinguished surname. However, this does not preclude other branch Arms being appropriate to the name. The most ancient grant of a Coat of Arms found was: Silver with a black eagle with a border of gold discs. The Crest was: A black lion. 1 William Killebrew born about 1690 in Cornwall, England died before April 1740 in Isle of Wight Co., VA Married Sarah Wiggins. She was born about 1700 in Surry Co.
