Lee, Although my knowledge of the DNA tests is limited, and I'm sure someone else can explain this better than me, it's my understanding that a woman's DNA doesn't match her father. The tests that are done for the various surname projects are usually done for Y-DNA, which only passes from father to son. A woman can only test mitochondrial DNA, which could give her what part of the world she came from, plus, I suppose, match her with other females with the same mtDNA. The Family Tree DNA website probably has better explanations. www.familytreedna.com Jenwyl ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lee Cate" <leecate@cddn.com> To: <TNWEAKLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 22, 2007 4:03 PM Subject: [TNWEAKLE] DNA TESTS Do we have anyone on the list who is familiar with the DNA Testing Projects for various surnames? If so, can you tell me the answer to this question? I have a friend who was adopted at birth. She has received her adoption records from the state and is searching for information about her birth parents. The adoption papers only furnish the name of the mother and her family. The father's family is listed as unknown. If the adoptee furnishes a DNA sample would it be possible to learn the surname of her birth father by comparing the results of her tests with the results of surnames already done in this project? Would this information be furnished when the test results are received? Any information will be appreciated. Gosh it is Sunday.......... For a couple of days now I have been doing nothing but working on some McCLAINs over in Arkansas........in fact some were born here, went there.......sons of my Allen and brothers of my Allen!!!!!!!!! Let us hear from you...........pj
You have to test a male with the same surname that you are looking for........... Like I had to get a JONES cousin to test JONES and I got a HOWARD cousin (both males) to test for HOWARD..........sorry, I know that is not the answer you are looking for but that's it..........pj

Lee, I'm not positive, but I think that paternal lineage can only be determined through male DNA and fraternal lineage through female DNA. Gilbert lived in Dresden in the 1870's. He then moved to Martin and operated a jewelry store. I am not familiar with Weakley county area but he has to be somewhere between Dresden and Martin. Have all of the old cemeteries been indexed? Are there any on farms that have been forgotten? Carolyn, Is the Sarah Elizabeth Jenkins that married Gilbert Pentecost the daughter of William Payton and Mary Jane Smith Jenkins? I looked at Lee Cates lookups on the Pentecost surname and do not see a Gilbert or J. P. listed in the cemetery books. PENTECOST in Weakley County. Also, I am trying to find out where he is buried. He should be buried somewhere in Weakley County since he lived there all his life. He was born circa 1869 and died circa 1892 in Weakley County. He was the first husband of my great grandmother, SARAH ELIZABETH JENKINS. They were married in Paragould, Greene County, AR, on October 6, 1887. Sarah Elizabeth was only 16 when they married, so am wondering if they eloped since they went all the way to Arkansas to marry. I have so many unanswered questions about these two. Debbie, what is your source for the information below about Gilbert? I had never heard anything about a jewelry store. Wow. He was only about 23 when he died. He then moved to Martin and operated a jewelry store. I am not familiar with Weakley county area but he has to be somewhere between Dresden and Martin. Have all of the old cemeteries been indexed? Are there any on farms that have been forgotten? Yes, she is one and the same. She was my great grandmother. She had my grandmother, Lola Taylor, after her marriage to Lorenzo Taylor of Weakley County. My grandmother was born in Martin on Aug. 13, 1905. She had an older sister named Callie. Lorenzo already had several children when he married Sarah Elizabeth. I didn't see Gilbert/J.P. Pentecost listed either. I was hoping he would be mentioned in the cemetery information. I would love to find out where he is buried and why he died so young. I believe my great grandmother was pregnant with their daughter, Lula Mary, when he died. She was born Dec. 6, 1892. She married Lorenzo Taylor April 22, 1896. Their first child together, Callie, was born Feb. 1, 1900 in Martin. Lee Cate is wonderful and I thanked her off list for her help.
