Joe, I think updating from v9.0 to the 2008 version is to big a jump. I've been using FTM for many years. I started with v3.0 or 4.0, and have updated just about every time a new version became available. Having worked with computers as a software specialist/analyst for many years, I learned that it is best to stay current with your upgrades. Be that as it may, I was looking through my software, and found that I still have my copy of FTM 2005. If you would like to have it I will be glad to send it to you. You might have better luck upgrading to it, than to 2008. If that is successful, then you might try updating from 2005 to 2008. from what i've seen on some of the FTM list-serves, the FTM 2008 is way below the performance of current programs; consensus seems to be they released it before ironing out the wrinkles.... just an observation frank On Sep 4, 2007, at 3:04 PM, Joe Stout wrote: > I have been using the old 9.0 version for the last several years. > My son > just bought the 2008 version. They did not even have any info on the 9.0 version since it is several years old. Joe Stout I have found that if you have a version that is 2 or more 'versions' behind the newest, they don't always convert the files correctly. This happened to me many years ago and they ended up sending me a different version to make my conversion go smoothly. I currently have Ver. 16. I don't usually upgrade with each new version, but rather every other one. I'm enjoying hearing all about the 2008 version trials. I do lover FTM and probably wouldn't go for another brand very easily. Karen ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
I just loaded Version 16 of Family Tree Maker. I'm having trouble with my relationship calculator. I had it before I upgraded so it's not a new problem. I can go to my great, great grandfather and ask it to calculate my relationship to him and it shows no direct relationship although you can follow the direct line on down. Have any of you had any problem like that? Do you know where I can sign up on the FTM tech support list? I used to be on one years ago but have forgotten where to sign up on it. Hello - I'm a writer living temporarily in Martin while I research a book I'm doing on the Fever of 1878 here, and the apparently extraordinary Dr. Charles Moore Sebastian. The intent of the book is to both chronicle and honor those who suffered and those who were heroes in the midst of a devastating event, in what was essentially a brand-new community still trying to form itself when the Fever came. Dr. Sebastian had two wives and two sets of children. I've had pretty good luck figuring out the second set, but the first seem to have vanished. Here's what I have for them: Dr. Charles Sebastian m. 1. Martha "Charlie" (Montgomery) Sebastian. She lived from 1850 - 1881, dying of Bright's Disease age 31. Their infant son John, the fourth and youngest of their children, died that same year and rests in the same cemetery with her. (As do Dr. Sebastian's parents.) I include the various first names of their three "vanished" daughters as they appear in various census: 1. Marcia / Montie / M.N. Sebastian b. circa 1873 last appears in 1900 census still in Martin, still unmarried at age 27. 2. Jinni / Jennie / J.L. Sebastian b. circa 1875 last appears in 1900 census still in Martin, still unmarried at age 25. then appears in the Wedding Records as "Janie" Sebastian m. Eli Bynum on 10/15/1900. After that, I lose her. 3. Amelia b. circa 1879 married a man with last name Askew Appears in the Wedding Records as Amelia Sebastian m. James A. Askew. but another source has him as Alvin Askew. Amelia (Sebastian) Askew does appear in the W. Co. 1910 census, then I lose her. Obviously it would be an enormous contribution to the overall integrity of the book if I could speak with any living Sebastian descendants. Short of that, I still would like to get their lives traced correctly in order to re-create an accurate picture of the family. I want to emphasize here that I'm not asking others to do my research for me - I'm a historian looking for leads so that I can continue my own research. Many thanks in advance for anything anyone might be able/willing to offer. Laurel Wolfe Martin TN
Thanks for the info! I was so excited until I had to register and pay! Why cant the sites all be free?! Guess I will have to pass on this one! Elise
FYI . . . to all my list friends, I installed the new 2008 version of "Family Tree Maker" about a week ago. It has some great new features, but it's VERY, VERY, different and requires some re-learning to get the hang of things. Just wanted to warn folks who have ordered the new version, or are planning to, to be sure and do a backup of your database before upgrading . . . I did, thank goodness. The upgrade went OK, but it didn't transfer all of the photos from my old database to the new one. Fortunately, I have another computer running the old software, so I was able to get my photos from it. All of my data seems to be there but I don't think I will upgrade my 2nd computer until I've been running the new version for a while. I'm not saying, don't upgrade. Just be ready for a big change from what you are accustomed to. Tom Johnson' Oklahoma City

Thanks Joe! I am very familiar with the FAG site as the newspaper in my town had a story about me and the findagrave.com site this week. Actually, I didnt take the other cemetery info with me because after 'talking' with you, I felt sure you had guided me in the right direction. Please dont think I am blaming you but I am blaming myself for not being better prepared. I even forgot my cemetery bag with whisk broom and rubbing materials. It was a long trip and I was in charge of a reunion on Saturday. Blah, Blah , Blah..... moral of the story..... dont try to do too many things in one weekend!! But.... I do appreciate all your guidance because trying to anything long distance is really difficult! When I was in Weakley Co this past weekend, I had just taken the info concerning the New Hope cemetery involved in the vandalism scandal. Before finding the cemetery, I stopped at the Dresden Enterprise office to get copies of the papers with the articles. As it turned out, my people were not buried there but it was interesting to see the church. After a few other cemetery stops, we ate lunch at The Hearth, which by the way, was delicious! The folks there were very helpful and called the funeral home for me to get the directions to the other two New Hope cemeteries. Of course, as luck would have i,t we found our folks at the last New Hope cemetery near Tumbling. There were relatives in Tumbling Creek and Butler, so I just have guessed it would have been that one.' Anyway, we had a full day travelling around the backroads of the county. It was a lot of fun!
