    3. I just now had them do a lookup at the Martin town library under all the possible spellings and nothing came up. However - not everything is in their computer files yet. Monday is the soonest I'll have time to take a physical look in the archives/history room, which I will do and get back to you then. Might be chasing rainbows, but it's worth a try. 3. Thank you for taking the trouble to list those leads. I spend a fair amount of time in the Fever Cemetery, (which is suffering greatly from neglect) reading and cleaning the stones, and many graves are now unmarked, their headstones long gone. I hope to use book proceeds to endow a full restoration of this cemetery. If it isn't rescued soon it will eventually disappear for the most part. Andrew Shepherd will be figuring prominently in my book. Thank you again. L. 1. Re: [TNWEAKLE] Cavitt plantation
    2. john fourney Cavitt owned 17 slaves so i guess the land holdings were large. he is also listed in the on line Weakley co tn website as one of the early settlers of the ne corner of the county. I know the yankees ruined the land holdings as that is they they moved around 1867 to Henry co tn. The cavitt's are buried in paris city cemetery as i have seen the burial place. I know he and his son were postmasters at Elm Tree which i think was what boydsville once was called. think these communities were on the line of Tn and Kentucky. Any help i appreciated. 3. It would help if you could be more specific regarding the time frame. There were three Cavitt's who had extensive land dealings in the Boydsville area from 1829 to 1850 or so. I am not that familiar with the records after 1850 or so. John F appears to have owned more land than the others, most of it appears to have been purchased in the 1840's but it could easily be that that is when the land was recorded. Plantation is a vague term. In MD and VA it was used to describe everything from a small farm of 40-50 acres to large holdings of 1000 acres or more. Joseph Cavitt was the first owner of a 278 acre tract but I don't believe he ever lived on it. John F assembled about 800 acres about 2 miles due east of Union Chapel Church. I'm sure you realize the Cavitt Cemetery is in Henry Co.

    3. p.s., also - call/visit the Dresden City Hall/Courthouse. Dresden's the Weakley County seat. I cannot say enough about how excellent and helpful the people there are. If anything of Wilma's history, files, or documentation ever landed there, or photocopies of such, they'll help you find it. 3. Well, I'll check at the Martin Town Library for you under all those spellings. The first name Wilma is reasonably distinctive so it shouldn't be much trouble. Don't forget to contact the UTM library - that is not a resource to be overlooked. 3. I'll ask and look for you at the Martin Library. Perhaps Wilma's files/documentation are in Dresden, the Weakley County seat, and the Martin librarians might know about that. Also try UTM (University of Tennessee at Martin) Library; go to their website, get the library e-mail address and drop them a line. They have extensive local archives and may be in possession of your items or photocopies of them. When McQuiston is googled many pages come up, but not so with McGuiston. Maybe it is one of the alternate spellings cited. I'll inquire at the library under all three surname possibilities. Laurel

    3. I apologize, but I was referring to Martin per se, not the County at large. I think that was clear in my post. I've been doing research in Martin for four months, have asked, and been answered repeatedly, that the town of Martin itself does not have its own Historical Society. All available resources, again for Martin per se, appear to be centered in the Town Library and the UTM archives. There was no intention to offend anyone. > Laurel wrote: > I'm working on a history project in Martin, which unfortunately > does not have a Historical Society. > > Weakley County does have a VERY GOOD Genealogical Society of which > I have been a member for many years.......pj > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to TNWEAKLE- > request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes > in the subject and the body of the message
