    3. Nena, I think Hardin County voted about 3 to 1 to remain in the Union, but the State didn't, so there went Hardin Co. I don't think that that translates into Hardin County being mostly Union. I think the numbers of solders might be about 3 to 1 in the other direction. There were 6 regiments with 10 companies of Confederates from Hardin County while there were 3 regiments with 6 companies of Union troops raised in Hardin Co. This doesn't give us a number that you can exactly put your finger on. The 2nd Mounted was stationed at Clifton and operated mostly in Middle Tennessee and while at home tended to pick on the Confederate families. Both Biffle and the First Confederate Cavalry spent much time in Hardin and Wayne Co. However, Bert Hays and his company from Wilson's Cavalry (apparently on their own accord) decided to defend the Confederate population in this area. "Buggar Saga" gives Bert credit for killing just about everyone in this area who died as the result of guerilla activities during the war. Burt was No. 1 on the most wanted list of guerillas, but never brought to trial after the war. However, he was bushwhacked in 1866. 3. Ok, wait a minute...I know I'm getting old...and I don't remember (talk about "the remembrances" of people), I don't remember in my studies hearing anything about Tennessee being Union...Tennessee was part of the Confederate Sates. Isn't Clifton in WANYE Co. what does that have to do with Hardin Co? (I was referring to Wayne County) ....So your saying these ruffians picked on people in Wayne and Hardin Co, because they were predominantly Confederate? I would assume there were Union AND Confederate "sympathies" in all counties. And I can see where some counties would lean either way and experience "flack" from the opposite side. So, what your saying is while (I can't remember his name) the leader of the "Union" group at Clifton reeked havoc on all confederates in surrounding areas, this Hayes fellow was Confederate from Hardin Co. and reeked havoc and retaliation on all Union sympathizers in the area? A Tit for Tat kinda thing? And probably the man responsible for J. W. Darnell's death? But as I understand it, both were equally appallingly criminal in their behavior? Lets recap...Biffle/conferderate spent time in Hardin and Wayne Co reeking havoc...Bert Hays/confederate reeked havoc...(that's 2 confederates... And that "thasher" guy at Clifton/Union reeled havoc? Sound like two against one with nobody winning. Nena
