    1. [TNWAYNE] Howards RE: David Cagle

    3. Hi David, Thank you so much for your response...I've seen your name on several of these county boards...you are the President of Hardin County Historical Society?...and guardian of the TNHardin board? Yes, it is frustrating, apparently NO ONE is interested in this family except me. This is what I know of the Howards: Martha Howard, b abt 1856, married R. B. Darnell, b 1854 in Wayne County Tennessee on 1 May 1875. (Wayne Co. Marriages) (my great great grandparents) They are on the 1880 Census District 12 in Wayne County as what looks like Robert (C.) Darnell, and Martha (his wife), with children, William J.J. 3, (1877) and Lovada E. 1, (1889) (They are on the same page as Roberts Brother, William Darnell and their mother Elizabeth Bennett Darnell). Robert and Martha also had Robert Bailey Darnell, b 1884, TX James Craven Darnell, b 1886 Ark and Mattie Darnell, b 1888. There is some evidence to suggest that Martha may have died giving birth to Mattie. Family history indicates she was given away at birth to a Dr. Brown and his wife who moved to Texas. (she married and lived in Ark near where the radio show Lum and Abner broadcast in the 1940's. The Mattie Belle they were always talking about on their show was Mattie Darnell, she was their neighbor.) Then Robert remarry's Mary Jane Bradley about 1890, Al. I have Martha's parents as J. W. Howard, b 1822 in SC. Her mother Elizabeth M. Unknown, b 1832 Al. 1860 Census of Wayne Co. J.W. Howard, 38, (1822) wife Elizabeth M, 38, (1822) Children: Samuel W., 10 (1850), Mary F., 6 (1854), Martha A., 4 (1856), and Rebecca (?)., 1 (1859). This was Factory Fork. Samuel married Frances (1846) and had John (1880) and James (1883): (1900 Census McNairy Co son James living with him and son John, 20 is next door.) Also in the I920 McNairy Co, both John and Jim still live there. John Howard, (1880) Married Jessie (1881) and had daughter Vesta (1899) (John lived near Shiloh.) James (Jim) Howard, (1883) Married Donie (1878) and had daughter Gracie Mae Howard (1915) James (Jim) moved to Macon, Fayette County TN and remarried Daisey (1901). He died in Macon, Fayette Co., TN and is buried in Macon Cemetery. (Macon, Fayette Co., Tn is Where MY Darnell family is from, Robert Baily Darnell, b 1884 moved into Macon after 1910). Though J. W. Howard lived in Factory Creek they were not mentioned in the book. I have found little information on him. Sorry so wordy Nena

    3. Nene, It appears that the Howards I knew were not related to your J. W. Howard that I can tell. The three Howard boys that are about my age belonged to W. S. Howard Jr., b. 1915 probably at Clifton. He was a merchant in our lifetime in Clifton. His father was William S. Howard Sr. b. 1867-68, probably in Tishomingo MS. The next in line was Robert Howard, b. 1844 also in MS. Robert's father was apparently Samuel Howard, b. 1807 in NC. I got all my information from the census. 3. David Cagle, Steve Cooper, Sylvia and all the rest, Thanks to everyone on this list for there efforts to help me today. Like the Darnell line the Howard lines probably link up somewhere further back and probably eastward. It's like tying to sort out the stars in the sky... I'll shut up now and let someone else have a turn. Nena nena_w@att.net
