    3. David, Have you tried the court records for Lauderdale County to find your Robert Meadows? Or even Pension records? Finding the following Court document and the Pension Abstract of J.W. Darnell...allowed me to have a glimpse into the lives of my great great great grandmother and how hard her life must have been..........very interesting! Location: Exact Location not known. Buried somewhere in the block bounded by 2nd and 3rd Avenue and Tenn St. and Park St. According to testimony given by Mrs. Harmon (Hiram) Lakey in Chancery Court case #1086 entitled "Lonnie Tillley, et. al. vs., The Tenn. Valley Iron and R. R. Company". Mr. J. W. Darnell, "a Bushwacker" was found dead one morning at the Lakey gate on the old Waynesboro--Florence Road. Because they feared retribution from other bushwasckers. They buried Mr. Darnell on the south side of the road. His date of death was 1864-65. JORDEN DARNELL : PENSION ABSTRACT AND OTHER INFORMATION. By B. J. Darnell, P.O. Box 516, Savannah, TN 38372-0516 In a previous article, I described the search for "J. W. DARNELL, bushwhacker" referred to in the Wayne county Cemetery and Death Records book. (See the March 1994 issue of the Wayne County Historian.) Since then, I have received more information which proves my assumptions right. Commissioner of Pensions: On the Case of Jordan Darnell, Late Corpl, Co "B" 2 Tenn Mtd Vols, Selitha Darnell, Widow, in her claim filed Jan. 3, 1866, alleges that soldier "was killed by the enemy in a skirmish on or about 1st day of December, 1864, while in the service of the United States" in which Statement she is corroborated by Jas. H. Gambrel and Geo. Darnall who identify her. In an affidavit executed May 4, 1864, E. D. McGlamery States that he was a Lieutenant in Co. B, 2 Tenn. Mtd. Vols; that said Co. B. He further states that soldiers remains were buried within 3 miles of affiants residence, at the settlement graveyard. January 10, 1868, Polk and William M. Daniel make oath that they were well acquainted with Corpl. Darnell; that he had an honorable discharge from said Co.. which discharge was destroyed by the party of guerrillas who killed him; and that his death occurred about Dec. 1, 1864. No final statement of said soldier on file. (Auditor's Signature) This is an affadavit for Neighbors and General Purpose. (To prove children of Jordan and Saletha's birth dates. ) State of Tennessee, County of Wayne. In the matter of Henry C. Saxon, Guardian of the minor children of Jordan Darnal deceased/ On this 25 day of July A. D. 1883, personally appeared before me Justice of the peace in and for the aforesaid county, duly authorized to administer oaths, Elizabeth Darnal, aged 62 (Jorden's Mother) a resident of said county, and Malinda Cantrell aged 44 years, a resident of said county well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit; and who being duly sworn, declare in relation to aforesaid case as follows: "That they were present when Elizabeth (Catherine or Katherine daughter of Jordan and Saleetha Darnal was born and assisted and saw the said Elizabeth (C or K) daughter of said Jordan Darnal dressed and their recollection is that said Elizabeth (C or K) Darnal was born on or about the 6th day of January AD 1862. The fall of Forts Donelson, Henry, mark our minds with the time of said childs birth. Affiants states to following concerning the birth of John J. Son of said Jordan Darnal deceased. Affiant Elizabeth Darnal was at the house of said Jordan Darnal next day after said childs (John J. Son of Jordan Darnal) birth and affiant Malinda Cantrell was there at said house in one or 2 days after the said child was born and both affiants say they are certain that said child was the son of said wife of Jordan All the circumstances surrounding Jorden DARNELL's capture and death are not known. At the time of his capture and death, his former unit, the 2nd TN Mounted Infantry Vol's had been ordered northward. He was apparently taken prisoner and later killed at the hands of Confederate Guerillas. He now rests in Butler Grove Cemetery near Collinwood in Wayne County, with a Civil War Headstone Affidavit of Nathan M. BLACKWELL, aged 34 years, resides Wayne County, Tennessee 30 July 1883. "That he was present and helped to take Jorden DARNELL up after the Rebels had taken him to the McGLAMERY place and killed him and buired him we found him indecently burried his clothing that he was killed in being buttoned and still remaining on him and no coffin and but little dirt over him the rebels kept a picket around the above named place and would not let his mother go in to get him till I suppose they heard that some federal force was coming and they left and she got me and others to go with her and take him up for the purpose of burrying him more decent They captured him just after HOOD's men passed through this county to Nashville dont remember exactly how long and killed him a little before their retreat from Nashville, Tenn. I cant tell the exact day but think it was not far from the first day of January 1864 from the times of the above named move of HOOD's army. Nena
