If you start with grandparents, then parents are the next generation down. The children of the parents are the grandchildren of the grandparents. If the grandparents had more than one child who became parents, all those children are the grandchildren of the grandparents, the children of their respective parents, and are either brothers and sisters or first cousins to each other. As Donita explained, if they are the first cousins of your children they are your neices or nephews. When this generation of grandchildren become parents, their children are all the great grandchildren of the original grandparents, and they are either brothers and sisters to each other, or they are all second cousins to each other. Their relationship to their mother's first cousins and their father's first cousins is that they are first cousins, once removed. You are not the second cousin of your mother and fathers first cousins. You are the first cousin, once removed. You are the second cousin of the children of your mother and father's first cousins. Its sort of like lacing a pair of shoes. If it is straight across, it is first, second, third, etc. If it is one eye up or down, it is once removed. If it is two eyes up or down, it is twice removed, and supposedly, it goes on infinitely, in so far as it can be established. I know this does not agree with the folkways of figuring Tennessee "cuzzins," and even though the two methods do not agree, I highly revere folks and folkways. Removed means removed by x generations from the original cousinship. I find it helps to work from my first cousin and myself. My first cousin and I have a pair of grandparents in common. Our parents are siblings. My first cousin's child is MY first cousin once removed (in other words one generation "removed" from the original cousinship). It is recorded as 1C1R. My child and my first cousin's child are second cousins -- to EACH OTHER. My grandchild and my first cousin's grandchild are third cousins to each other. Once it gets beyond that, I let my genealogy software figure it out and just call them all cousins or kinfolks.
