Interestingly, a cousin of mine just sent me a marriage certificate from 1814 showing the marriage of Hugh Turnbough (an ancestor of mine) to Mary "Polly" Powell... My website's Turnbow/Turnbo/Turnbough page at http://turnbow.casey-genealogy.com should have more info... The marriage certificate (I think) is from Maury Co., but I know they lived in Wayne Co and offspring/numerous descendants that remained in Wayne Co... Hugh & Polly's daughter born in 1815 was Jane Turnbow who married James H. Casey ... they married in 1832 in Wayne Co., TN... Sorry this is just a short intro to this family, but I just wanted to add this as a starting point to some of the Powells in the area... DLC And, the marriage record as a JPEG file is available for you to look at http://www.casey-genealogy.com/gifs/turnbo/Turnbough-Powell-Marriage.jpg ----- Original Message ----- From: <tnwayne-request@rootsweb.com> To: <tnwayne@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 30, 2008 2:02 AM Subject: TNWAYNE Digest, Vol 3, Issue 109 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. I found the following in the book "The Texas Turnbo's" by Charles Alton TURNBO, 19771 NOTE: I typed the surnames in caps for easy reading. Hugh TURNBOUGH, Sr. Born: 1793, South Carolina or Kentucky Married: # 1 Sally BEARDEN, October 23, 1809. Married: # 2 Mary (Polly) POWELL, August 6, 1814 Died: 1886, Wayne County, Tennessee "Because of highly incomplete information, we can only speculate that William Eli or his brother George TURNBOUGH was the father of Hugh TURNBOUGH, Sr. from whom the Texas Turnbo's are descended. Very little is know about either of these two early TURNBOUGH family members, so at best this is speculation." '....at age 16 Hugh married one Sally BEARDEN. There's no evidence that they had any children... On August 6, 1814, Hugh remarried; his second wife was Mary ("Polly") POWELL. This marriage is officially recorded in Maury County, Tennessee.' The family is found in Wayne, Co., TN by 1820. The author states "Mary (POWELL) must have died between 1850 & 1860, for in the 1860 census record, he is shown living with Elizabeth who could either be his daughter or a third wife; her age was listed as 34. Several children with the surname of ROSE lived with Hugh and Elizabeth in 1860." Elizabeth had four children; Joseph, Charlotte, Sarah, and Susan ROSE. Mr. TURNBO also states Hugh died in 1866 and was buried in Northwestern Wayne County. He said there are several older TURNBOUGH graves built up like vaults in the area but the names have been worn off the stones. He was not completely sure but list the children born to Hugh as; William, Ishom, Hugh jr., Elizabeth, Andrew Jackson, S. H. "Ted", Mary, John Lewis, Ambrose and Samuel TURNBOUGH. I have not been following the shared data on this line so you may already know all of the above and if so I am sorry to have taken your time. Hi Barbara, This Mary Powell doesn't match with mine. They must be of the same family though. She was born in 1802 in TN to my 3rd ggrandfather Henry Howell Sr. I have absolutely no idea who she is or of her family. Any help would be welcome. Ken, have you checked the "Wayne County, Tennessee Cemetery and Death Records" Compiled by The Wayne County Historical Society for Howell and Powell's?
