The two ( Ethel and Trilby) were children of brothers who shared a grandmother. (not sisters). My mother was Ethel and her cousin is Trilby, so I am Trilby's first cousin once-removed. Now Trilbys daughter and Ethel's daughter shared a ggrandmother that makes them second cousins. Do I have this correct? This discussion came up between my cousin Steve Cooper and me the last time I was there. It was a hoot!Tennessee and Alabama folks seem to have their own folksy way of figuring this out, but what you said is correct. If two sisters have girls, the girls are first cousins. When the girls have children, the children are second cousins. The children of the first cousins are first cousins once removed of their mother's first cousin.
