    1. [TNWAYNE] James West, Wayne Co. TN

    3. I am searching for James West, born sometime between 1794-1798 in SC. I have not been able to trace him back past 1850 with proof. I have corresponded with Dennis West in the past and was not able to link up to his family, but was hoping that perhaps he may have some new leads that might tie us in. According to a son of James West he was born in SC but grew up in TN. James West is first located in Itawamba Co. MS in 1850. James son says his father was married twice and had five children by his first wife. He does not mention the first wife's name or the names of the five children. In searching all the Census records beginning in the year 1820 and found that there were NO West families in the 1820 census. In the 1830 census, I found a James West in Wayne County TN that fits my James age and shows that there are 4 children in the household.. If this is my James West, the fifth child was born probably after 1830. There is only one WEST listed in the 1830 census. The James West listed in the 1830 Wayne Co. TN census is age 30-40. That would make birth year somewhere between 1790-1800. The James West listed in the 1850 census is age 64, making birth year about 1786. I believe that the James West is the 1830 census is not the same one as in the 1850 census because of the age difference. I believe the James West listed in the 1830 census moved to Itawamba Co. MS by 1840. There is a James West on the 1836 Tax List. Archible West appears on the 1838 Tax List along with a Woodson West. Archible West listed as being a member of the Union Baptist Church (Records 1825-1888, Vol 9 Num 2), where three West brothers were referred to be baptized the next meeting. It does not mention the "three West brothers" name. Archible is not listed in the census years 1820-1830. 1840 Census shows only one WEST, that being Woodson West 100001-/20001- (1 male less than 5, 1 male 30-40, 2 female less than 5, 1 female 30-40). According to posting by Terry Ceballos ([email protected]), says that Woodson West married Martha Casteel before 1836 and moved to Johnson Co. IL by 1850. http://ceballos.freeyellow.com/ 1850 Wayne Co. 1. [TNWAYNE] James West, Wayne Co. TN
    2. Hi Mary: I don't have anything new that would help either of us. You are right about the James WEST age 64 in the 1850 Wayne Co. Census. He is my ancestor, and I have him in Cannon Co. TN in 1840 and Warren Co. TN in 1830. I haven't found parents or any siblings for this James WEST. I have him marrying Mary STANFIELD in Randolph Co. NC in 1809. The next documentation is the 1830 Warren Co. TN Census. The family was apparently in GA around 1820, since two of the children later list their birthplace as GA. The STANFIELD family moved to SC around 1800, so if there is a longer association between these families it is possible that relatives of my James WEST may have been in SC around the same time. My evidence is only circumstantial, but every clue I find reinforces the family lineage. Thetis WEST living adjacent to James WEST in 1850 is, I believe, Felix WEST - there is a smudge on the microfilm over the first name. Felix is a son of James WEST. The first William WEST that you list is a son of James WEST and brother of Felix (his age is 38 not 58, I have reviewed the microfilm). The William WEST who is listed as tavern keeper, I cannot connect to. In the county court records Fielder WEST is really Felix WEST, and I have connected Pleasant and Cyrus/Si WEST as sons of James WEST also. I have nothing on the WEST surname in Wayne County earlier than about 1848. Nothing on Archible, Samuel, Lea, or S.P. WEST. I have exchanged info with Terry Ceballos on her Woodson WEST. She does not have his parents, and we cannot find a relationship to any of the other WESTs in Wayne Co.
