Gregory, I have a copy of an article written in 1979 by Patrick Thomas in the Nashville Banner stating that the great grandfather of John Wesley Hardin (JWH) was Swan Hardin of Maury Co. TN. Swan was enumerated in the 1820 census of Maury as Swan Hardon. Supposedly Swan had four children as follows: Augustine B. Hardin; William Hardin; Benjamin Franklin Hardin and Benjamin Watson Hardin, the grandfather of JWH. In 1825, apparently Augustine, a lawyer, and Benjamin Franklin, then age 22, got in a gunfight on court square in Columbia and killed two men, Isaac N. Porter and William H. Williamson. All four brothers were indicted for the murders so they left the county leaving Swan, who was innocent, holding the bag. He was tried in adjacent Rutherford County in 1826 and found guilty of manslaughter. Supposedly he moved to Hardin County and eventually to Texas. I find only one reference to Swan Hardin in Hardin County. "Hardin County Tennessee Records, 1820-1860" by Tony Hays. On 20 December 1824, Swan and Mary Hardin qualified as executor and executrix of the last will and testament of Martin Hardin. Swan Shows in the 1820 census of Maury Co., but I have not located him in another census. There is a William H. Hardin living in Lawrence Co., TN in 1830. This could be the son of Swan? I have a ancestor a Blassingame W. Harvey who went from Hickman County Tennessee in 1809 to Louisana by 1820 and in 1836 he ended up in texas. He also went for land there. He lived in Augustine Co texas one of the areas the space shuttle debris fell over. It is possible that the familes did move there early. A john Aldridge who went to Augustine co. Texas was in Wayne county in 1820. Shortly after he went to Christian county KY where he married and then went on to Augustine co. Texas a little later than blassingame Harvey. > > > The route to get there seem to be Tennessee to KY on to Miss and Louisiana and then on to Texas. You may want to search Marshall county Miss. > > > I know my Harveys from Wayne County tennesse married into a Clement line that were cousins to the Hardins. He started in KY but it is not know where and came to Wayne County Tennessee about 1829 when he bought land from a Nathan Biffle. His 6th Child Nancy Clements married a Hickman Lucas Harvey whose father was a Thomas G. Harvey my Ancestor. Thomas G. harvey was born in 1775-1776 in Laurens district SC and came to Maury Co. TN about 1816 and was in Wayne County from 1820 to 1840. > > William Clements 7th child a John Clements married a Mary Lucas Harvey a Sister to Hickman Lucas harvey. Martha was the daughter of Benjamin Hardin and Martha Barnett. Benjamin Hardin was the son of Col. Joseph Hardin. Martha Barnett was the daughter of William barnett.
