    3. The first place to look is the National Parks Service Civil War database at: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ It turned up some 32 John Johnson's for all Union units in Tennessee. The one listed as John G. Johnson was a Lt., so probably not your Cherokee. Rather than searching through all the units, I cheated. I know a distant relative Mark Daniel of Wayne County served in the 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry. This narrows it down to two John Johnson's. The guy in Company E dies of disease, so I suspect your ancestor John Johnson may have served in Company D, 2nd Tenn Mounted Infantry. (Men from Hardin, Wayne and Decatur Counties.) Take a look at this website: http://www.tngenweb.org/civilwar/usacav/usa2minf.html I didn't see a pension listed for him, but you might try the Tennessee State Library & Archives: http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/ Once you have located your ancestor, you may want to order their service records from the National Archives, but I've been disappointed in the lack of detail. A pension record generally gives a lot more information. Also, you may want to post to the Tennessee Civil War message board. You can get a lot of help from these guys: http://history-sites.com/cgi-bin/boards/tncwmb/ I might note that while Mark Oliver Daniel served in a Union outfit, he had a Daniel cousin and Bennett brother-in-laws in a Confederate unit back in Bedford County. A big tragedy for this family was the civilian, Pleasant Bennett, killed by bushwhackers at his home in Wayne County. The war was a huge tragedy for everyone. Good luck, Clay Daniels ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Reed" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 12, 2003 5:07 PM Subject: [TNWAYNE] Union Soldiers of Hardin or Wayne County Tennessee I have been looking for a while for records of my greatgrandfather who served in the Union Army. He was born in Alabama, but moved to Mississippi and when grown, lived in Hardin and Wayne Counties in Tennessee. His name was John Galloway Johnson. There was a picture of him in a Union uniform. It was destroyed in a fire long ago. I am told that John was a bugler and a scout and was very young when he enlisted. I've also been told that there is a listing where his wife drew his pension money, but John lived to be a very old man long after the war was over. His first wife has been listed as Nancy Harris, his second wife (my greatgrandmother) was Nancy (Nan) Shubert Johnson. Any information would be appreciated, I have been searching for a very long time. I have considered the possibility that he could have changed his name, he was Cherokee Indian and was known as Lumberfoot Johnson. Thank you very much.
