Pat, When the father of a family died with minor children, a local member of the community, usually a male, was put in charge of the funds, lands, whatever, that would be inherited by that minor to see to his\her well being until they became adults. The settlement was an accounting to the Court as to the use of these funds/whatever. This is probably not the exact answer, but close.
