Hi again! Say.....in the Wayne County Historian Vol 7, No 1 - March 1994 page 19....J. W. Darnell At the top of the page: "of who "J. W. Darnell, bushwhacker" was can now be laid to rest. Recommended reading: "The Buggar Saga," For more about the 2nd TN Mtd Inf and tales of the local area during the Civil War era." Can anyone give me any idea where to find this book? Amazon, nor Barnes and Noble nor several others I've tried has it. Nena
Hi Ya'll, While visiting Wayne County in June of this year...and tracking down the old farmstead...I came upon a neighbor of Garfield Darnell's...the kindly gentleman came riding up on a 4 wheeler type tractor. (I don't remember his name, think he was a Hollis.) When I explained to him that I was in the area from Texas trying to tack down what happened to my ancestor whom it seems suddenly up and left Wayne County (supposeably without a trace)...between 1880 and 1890...he immediately recalled to me that "lot's of families in the area at that time left for" ...did he say Arkansas or Alabama?...something about a "land rush". They were "giving away" land "cheep" to families especially if they had boys..."the more boys the more land" they could "buy cheep". Several families and he named them, left about that time...I sure wished I'd taken a tape recorder with me! (CRS!) Does anyone else have a clue what this man was referring to? This particular ancestor ended up having children in Texas?, Arkansas and Mississippi...he died in Arkansas (I think). (Reference to Robert B. Darnell, married Martha Howard in Wayne Co. then remarried to Mary Jane Bradley, either before or after he left Wayne Co.) Speaking of migration, does anyone else have any family members who left Hardin County in 1869 to join a wagon train to Texas? A good majority of the families ended up in Kaufman County, TX, among them Lindseys, Ingrams, Dawsons, Yarboroughs and Pickens. I have seen written accounts of the wagon train being 160 wagons strong. My particular Lindseys began the journey, but after my g-g-g grandfather, John Lindsey, became ill and died in Memphis, a member of the Dawson clan put the widow Margaret and her children on a bought back to Hardin County. My Lindseys eventually left sometime after 1880, with some Yarboroughs and Pickens that had married into the family. Just curious to see if any of you had family members in this first or second wave of migration. Thanks! Betty and others, if you go to this site: www.ArkansasResearch.com, you will read a bit about Arkansas selling "Swamp Land." And the state of Arkansas giving away "Donation Lands" beginning in 1871. This might be a reason (although not the only reason, probably) that so many from Wayne County, TN (including a Holt or two)came into Arkansas. You can (if I remember right) check the indexes for the names of people receiving those lands. Donita, my Keeling family went from Wayne Co. to AR and then due north to Barry Co., MO. What county in AR did your family go thru? The story from my great aunt goes that The Keelings went from Wayne Co. thru Oregon Co., MO which is just below Shannon Co. in 1874 or 1875. John Dudley Keeling got a brain aneursym and died in October of 1875. Their last child was born in April 1875. The child lived a little while and died. I cannot find where he or the child is buried. I have looked in Oregon Co., MO but to no avail. They were supposed to have spent about a year around Thayer, MO before going on to Barry Co., MO. which is in the SW corner of the state along the state line. Well, I have the child before the last one being born in AR. So some of my family history that has been passed down has gotten twisted. John Dudley Keeling never made it to MO that I know of to settle. His wife and all of those 12 or so children did settle in Barry Co., MO. I have looked in Benton Co., AR but haven't found him yet. Been looking for years! I do think he might be buried in AR instead of MO. My Keeling family set out from Wayne Co. in the 1870's on a wagon train according to a great aunt of mine who is now deceased. My Keelings ended up in Barry Co., MO. Does anyone know where to find a list of people who traveled on the wagon trains during that time period. I am talking from the mid 1860's after the civil war thru the 1870's? I would think that the Wagon Master of each train would have to have had a list and that SOMEWHERE THOSE LISTS EXIST!!! I think that this information would help alot of us. While there is this much activity on the site, I would like to ask if anyone out there has any information on the Carroll families in Wayne County TN. More specifically, Jim Carroll and his wife Eliza Turnbo(w) Carroll. They were my grandparents. I am trying to find out who his parents, siblings were. Any help would be appreciated. TNtoIzard Co. AR? Both economic and familial reasons likely contributed to the move from one place to another. Cropland is limited in Wayne County TN; it was a rough place; and the Carpetbaggers were active during the period in question. **************Start the year off right.
