I am sorry Nena, I don't have any information on the Howard's of Wayne Co. It is not my line. Good luck. Sylvia Georgetown, Texas
Just curious: I have asked now on this message board about 4 or 5 times over the last year or so about the Howards of Wayne County...much like Steve Cooper's query about the Hill family. I have also posted inquires on the Wayne County sight. I have never gotten a response of any kind. I am just curious... Am I asking the wrong question's? Am I doing this all wrong? Do I need to ask specific questions about specific records? Is there some product call I am in fringing upon? Please enlighten me Nena Wright Hondo, Texas

My great, grand uncle, James L. Watson, Jr. went to Titus Co., Texas in 1869 according to his obituary posted below. His reason for leaving was probably due in part to the harrassment he was subjected to by troublemakers supportive of the union, among them Wade McCasland and Dallas "Dal" Brooks after the war. As you can see by his obit he was a true Confederate until death. ObituaryJ. L. WatsonHamlin, Jonas County, Texas On Christmas night at seven o'clock Grandpa Watson answered the call of death and passed over the river to join the hosts of other old Ex-confederates who long ago heard the great command. The deceased was born in Hardin County, Tennessee, on Nov. 1, 1846, making his age at death a few weeks past 72 years. He came to Texas in 1870 and first settled in Titus county. For about 28 years he had been engaged in the hotel business. Before coming to Hamlin some seven years ago he was in the same business in Chillicothe. Those of his immediate family to mourn his death, is a wife and three children, two sons, John S. Watson, of Globe, AZ and Sam J. Watson, Chillicothe, and Mrs. Louise Lee of Hamlin. The deceased was a soldier in the war of 1860-64 and often wore his dress uniform of the Southern Gray, in which he was laid to rest. The funeral was held at the Methodist church, of which he was a member. The pall bearers were six of our lately drilled soldiers namely, W. E. Routh, Marcy Allen, F. J. Brown, George H. McGee, John Walt G on, and W. L. Fletcher. These young men marched by the hearse as a guard of honor to the old soldier of a generation ago. After the funeral services, befitting the life of a quite good citizen, the body was laid to rest in the East Cemetery. Like many other good old men his familiar presence on our streets will be missed, but the three score and ten years for him had been more than passed, which was a testimony of energy upright life and fortitude.A self-appointed family historian and proud of it. They hide for some reason, afterall, these people , at least most of them are deceased and their descendants are not as perculier as they were, so why keep secrets? I know of people (friends of mine) who would not ask questions because they might be interfering in someones business. Well WELCOME to GENEALOGY! ESPECIALL if you have had your DNA tested its out there so you will be found, sooner or later. joyce jpeck612004 <jpeck612004@xanadoo.com> wrote: It is a shame when some people have info and they wont share! It was not just Arkansas it was all midwest states. My ancestors left Wayne County Tennessee from 1840 to 1846 and moved to Southern Illinois and around Cape Girardeau County Missouri. There was Land to be had never settled on. Moving to these areas they were the first to settle there and most used military grants to try and obtain land. They either bought portions of land sold by those who had recieved Land grants or had earned them theirselves. My Ancestors Simmons and Kerleys left Wayne county as did some other surnames as Merdith and Rose. My Harveys also left by 1846. David, Have you tried the court records for Lauderdale County to find your Robert Meadows? Or even Pension records? Finding the following Court document and the Pension Abstract of J.W. Darnell...allowed me to have a glimpse into the lives of my great great great grandmother and how hard her life must have been..........very interesting! Location: Exact Location not known. Buried somewhere in the block bounded by 2nd and 3rd Avenue and Tenn St. and Park St. According to testimony given by Mrs. Harmon (Hiram) Lakey in Chancery Court case #1086 entitled "Lonnie Tillley, et. al. vs., The Tenn. Valley Iron and R. R. Company". Mr. J. W. Darnell, "a Bushwacker" was found dead one morning at the Lakey gate on the old Waynesboro--Florence Road. Because they feared retribution from other bushwasckers. They buried Mr. Darnell on the south side of the road. His date of death was 1864-65. JORDEN DARNELL : PENSION ABSTRACT AND OTHER INFORMATION. By B. J. Darnell, P.O. Box 516, Savannah, TN 38372-0516 In a previous article, I described the search for "J. W. DARNELL, bushwhacker" referred to in the Wayne county Cemetery and Death Records book. (See the March 1994 issue of the Wayne County Historian.) Since then, I have received more information which proves my assumptions right. Here is an abstract of the Civil War Veterans pension application: Soldier: Corporal Jorden DARNELL. Born: 1844 Father: Jorden DARNELL Mother: Elizabeth BENNETT Wife: Saletha DANIEL. Born 1844, Wayne County, TN Wifes Father: Lot A. DANIEL Wifes Mother: Catherine BREWER Children: Catherine Elizabeth "Bettie" DARNELL, Born: 6 Jan 1861 John Jorden DARNELL, Born: 3 May 1864. Unit: 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry Volunteers, USA, Co. "B".Joined: 15 Oct 1863, in Nashville, TN. Mustered out: 17 Oct 1864. Death: Dec 1864.Below are highlights from the Pension request documents, spelling exactly as found: April 26, 1884 Respectfully returned to the Hon. The fall of Forts Donelson, Henry, mark our minds with the time of said childs birth. Affiants states to following concerning the birth of John J. Son of said Jordan Darnal deceased. Affiant Elizabeth Darnal was at the house of said Jordan Darnal next day after said childs (John J. At the time of his capture and death, his former unit, the 2nd TN Mounted Infantry Vol's had been ordered northward. He was apparently taken prisoner and later killed at the hands of Confederate Guerillas. He now rests in Butler Grove Cemetery near Collinwood in Wayne County, with a Civil War Headstone Affidavit of Nathan M. BLACKWELL, aged 34 years, resides Wayne County, Tennessee 30 July 1883. "That he was present and helped to take Jorden DARNELL up after the Rebels had taken him to the McGLAMERY place and killed him and buired him we found him indecently burried his clothing that he was killed in being buttoned and still remaining on him and no coffin and but little dirt over him the rebels kept a picket around the above named place and would not let his mother go in to get him till I suppose they heard that some federal force was coming and they left and she got me and others to go with her and take him up for the purpose of burrying him more decent They captured him just after HOOD's men passed through this county to Nashville dont remember exactly how long and killed him a little before their retreat from Nashville, Tenn. I cant tell the exact day but think it was not far from the first day of January 1864 from the times of the above named move of HOOD's army. Nena
