    3. Nena and list members, I have also bought the book the "Buggar Saga" and have read about half of it. It certainly stirs up your imagination. My gg grandfather, John Worthen, lived in Wayne Co., at least 32 years and died in 1862, in TN. I would really like to know if he died of natural causes of if the "gang" or soldiers had anything to do with his death? I do know that John's youngest son, Jesses was later found down in Walker Co., AL. Jesse was about 10 years old when the Civil War started. His mother, Nancy P. Hardin and son John was not in the 1860 census. He married Mary Jane Kitchens in AL and had 4 children: John (died as infant abt 1875); Mary ma. Samuel Ray Hight; Rose Etta ma. Oliver Joseph Clark; no information on Mattie; and Aid. You can find more information on Jesse in the "Wayne County, Tennessee Families" book. James E. and Nancy M., children of John Worthen and listed on the 1860 census of Wayne co. seem to have vanished. James was old enough to serve in the later part of the war. If anyone has information on members of these families I would appreciate your response. Thank you, Barbara Warthen Wallace Subject: Re: [TNWAYNE] the Buggar Saga " I bought the book the "Buggar Saga" and have read most of it...sure puts a new spin on our perceptions of our ancestors! 1. [TNWAYNE] Scott - Wayne County, TN
    2. Jane Ellis
    3. Perhaps we can connect some of the Scotts in recent mailings to the list to these Scotts. I have the following letter, written by Rosamond P. Scott to his father John Scott in Wayne County, Tennessee. Part of Rosamond's family left Illinois for California, while some, I believe, remained in Illinois. Rosamond's wife, Elizabeth Watson, was the daughter of John Watson of Hardin County. He also had a brother, John b. 1845 who married Martha Watson, another daughter of John Watson. I believe they had a son William bo about 1836. This John must have died prior to 1845 as Rosamond referenced John's wife, Patsy, in the letter below. I have never been able to find William or his descendants. Notes on Scott family.... Reference p.2, Goodspeeds Wayne County, Tennessee History According to Goodspeeds' R. P. Scott moved to Wayne County, TN in 1820 about the same time as John Akin and also about the time as John Watson. Wayne County, Tennessee 1830 Census John Scott, Sr. 000100001-/00011- Rosamond P. Scott James. B Scott Rosamond Peterson Scott enlisted in the War of 1812 from Dickson Co., TN and served in the West Tennessee Militia under Captain Francis Ellis in the Infantry 2nd Reg. Militia. He was honorably discharged from Reynoldsburg and fought under General Jackson at New Orleans. He married Elizabeth Watson, dau. of John Watson, on April 22, 1822. They had eight children. During the twenty to twenty five years that Rosamond was in TN he farmed and taught school. He and his family moved to Liberty Prairie, Madison Co., IL in 1837. Since his brother Joseph died and left a large family of small children, it can be assumed that he moved to IL to help Joseph's family. His wife Elizabeth died May 6, 1844 and he married Delilah Squires on Feb. 16, 1851. There were no children born of that marriage. Rosamond died May 25, 1852 in a cholera epidemic and is buried in a pasture 1/2 mile south of Alton and Greenville Road, on the west side of the Prairie Town Road.[JohnWatsondescendants.F! TW] Reference p.2, Goodspeeds Wayne County, Tennessee History According to Goodspeeds' R. P. Scott moved to Wayne County, TN in 1820 about the same time as John Akin and also about the time as John Watson. Illinois, Madison County, January 12th 1845 Dear father, Brothers, Sisters and friends I avail myself of the present opportunity to let you all know that myself and family are at present all well hoping that this letter may find you well in possession of all the blessings that may be in the order of providence for the good of all of us. I received your letter of the eighth last month on yesteday the 11th of January which gave me satisfaction to hear from you yet sorrow to hear of your past and present affliction but such is the lot of mankind and our only duty and interest is to seek for perfect submission to God’s profideness. If even I can obtain such humility I shall then be better able to reconcile myself to my own misfortune. Otherwise I know that I shall never again be even a tolerably contented man. I learn with sorrow and regret of the same misfortune becoming the lot of so many of my old friends that has fallen to my own lot. We are still doing the best we can. We keep our house ourselves but will hi! re some sperson if we can happen to get a man and his wife without children. Otherwise we shall live as we best can. The last season here was a bad crop season. Tho there is a plentiful support for the country, there is not much of a surpluss of any kind of produce. I have not seen Brother William for the Past three months he was tolerably well. Mary and family was then well and all doing as well as they could but William T. Scott I am sorry to say that I do not think that there is a triflinger creature upon the face of the earth. I have taken some pains to counsel and reclaim him but you might just as well reason to a stump or advise Satan to become a saint. My boys all remain sober steady and industrious to my fullest satisfaction and I have a great desire to live to see Miles and Keller up as the rest is as they have (???) living mother. Times are yet hard here tho easier than one two and three years past. We owe some yet toward some of our land but if we can have one good crop season we will not have to say so this time next year. We are doing well as any person here. We have all the property that we now need. We have five head of horses, thirty six head of cattle, sixteen of them ???? steers, two good strong wagons and all the farming utensils that we can use. We have thirty eight acres in wheat. That is as good a prospect as an any in my knowledge tho all the wheat in this county was sown late in consequence of dry weather the early part of last summer was the wettest season that I ever did see. Since the first of August there has been almost no rain atall tho as respects the county of common seasons it is by far the best farmers country that you or me has any knowledge of and can in my opinion exceed by none for corn, oats, wheat, Irish Potatoes, cabbage, turnips, timothy bluegrass, and in short a! nything that the climate is suited to for length of season. The people is in our neighborhood the most steady sober industrious honest and virtuousest people fewer exceptions than I have fallen amongst anywhere in my life the greatest difficulty is that within a mile or so all round me there is people from every state in the union from England Ireland Scotland Germany and Switzerland speaking English French high and low Dutch and the galic languages all with their own customs and ?? about by. Methodists of two orders Baptists of three orders Presbyterians of two orders the Dutch informed churchmen and of the Scotch Kirkers? and Lutherans inso much that society will not in my opinion be strongly united for some time to come in our prairie as was doubtless fashionable in Eden. The great chase that seems to be going on all over the globe in every order from the most diminutive of the animal creation through every grade up to man for the mastery and presence over each othe! r is a good stumbling stone to me when contemplating the benif! icense o f the adorable Diety. The last eight months of time has furnished more poor mortals with a passport to Eternity amongst my acquaintance in neighbors here than in the seven previous years together had done. There is already within six miles of us four persons been buried in 1845 all very old but one and him the father of a large family. Amongst the rest of the death that have lately occurred close to me was your old acquaintance friend and brother George Prichett and his son Isaac. I want you and Brother James and Samuel Watson all to write to me. I wish to know who is sheriff and representative of Wayne and Hardin Counties who is responsible men?? At Carrollville and how the best superfine flour would sell there by the Barrel and who would be the most suitable person to cosine ?? hundred barrels to. I am almost hopeless politically tho supporting Polk with enthusiasm and am always against the ??milkboy??? of the ???? Harry of the west, the great Kentuckian, Henry Clay. I have tho utmost c! onfidence in the abilities of Mr. Polk and of his honorable high mindedness and believe the people were in their wisdom to place the laurel on his brow when I have no doubt it will flourish if it should not be plucked off by his political friends for it is impossible for him to know every body in filling his appointments. He is compelled to consult his friends to ascertain the qualifications of individuals and I do think there is a click in each state that will care for nothing but loaves and fishes and if it is possible will ??receave?? the president Elect to obtain the result of their selfish purposes. This will always be dangerous while the halls of congress is filled by those who merely make the most noise. I wish to know particularly how sister Patsey gets along and if she could be persuaded to come and see this country if myself or brother William would see her home again with her little William. I intend to come there as soon as I can but I do not intend to leave the boys alone until I can hire some man and woman to live with them while I should be gone. So soon as I can leave them in that situation I intend to come quickly. Your loving son till death John Scott, Rosamond P. Scott Paddock’s Grove, Ill. 3. Nene, It appears that the Howards I knew were not related to your J. W. Howard that I can tell. The three Howard boys that are about my age belonged to W. S. Howard Jr., b. 1915 probably at Clifton. He was a merchant in our lifetime in Clifton. His father was William S. Howard Sr. b. 1867-68, probably in Tishomingo MS. The next in line was Robert Howard, b. 1844 also in MS. Robert's father was apparently Samuel Howard, b. 1807 in NC. I got all my information from the census. 3. I am always envious of the chatter among distant cousins--I know my Lothlen's/ Carter's, perhaps, Merediths and Walkers were from Wayne and Hickman counties. I have had some wonderful responses from people and then had very dry times with some very thick Brick walls. Give as much info as you can and orient in time, if at all possible. That helps in figuring out if there is a relative. I would love to connect William Kesner with Mary Meredith or Merideth...and be able to connect with one of the Meredith families--my connections to Wayne county are early in the 1817-1840's and then until the death of the last Carter sister in the late 1890s. So it is just that sometimes you are at the head of the research and others have to catch up....Happy hunting. 3. Hi Nena: Someone may help sometime. We just have to keep digging. No one seems to know about my HILL family. I am just trying to get lucky. Maybe someone is new to this list and can help me or you. I have made many friends and have got a lot of help from this list. I have been knowing for over 20 years that Joseph Cooper married Martha Ann Hill in Lauderdale County, Alabama in 1845 and that both of them are buried at the Balentine Cemetery at Cypress Inn, Tennessee. I just can't connect Martha Ann to any Hill family. Good luck with your research. 2. Nena Wright
    3. Thank you for that fond memory...Norman, As you can see (in my response to David Cagle) I have not made a connection with the Howards who owned the store...but I suspect they are the same family. I haven't done much research on this family line...most of what I have (as you said) came from another family researcher who "was researching before the computer age." Obviously Robert and Martha moved away from Wayne County and traveled to Arkansas and Texas...perhaps she died there... Robert died (I think) in Cross County Arkansas on June 25 1917. I didn't respond to Donita's Barkley's "migration to Arkansas" request because I believed she was talking about a different time period. My relatives migration would have been between 1880 and 1884. Perhaps if we looked at W. S. Howard's line we could find a common link. Who was his father, were they from Wayne County? Thanks Nena

    3. Hi David, Thank you so much for your response...I've seen your name on several of these county boards...you are the President of Hardin County Historical Society?...and guardian of the TNHardin board? Yes, it is frustrating, apparently NO ONE is interested in this family except me. This is what I know of the Howards: Martha Howard, b abt 1856, married R. B. Darnell, b 1854 in Wayne County Tennessee on 1 May 1875. (Wayne Co. Marriages) (my great great grandparents) They are on the 1880 Census District 12 in Wayne County as what looks like Robert (C.) Darnell, and Martha (his wife), with children, William J.J. 3, (1877) and Lovada E. 1, (1889) (They are on the same page as Roberts Brother, William Darnell and their mother Elizabeth Bennett Darnell). Robert and Martha also had Robert Bailey Darnell, b 1884, TX James Craven Darnell, b 1886 Ark and Mattie Darnell, b 1888. There is some evidence to suggest that Martha may have died giving birth to Mattie. Family history indicates she was given away at birth to a Dr. Brown and his wife who moved to Texas. (she married and lived in Ark near where the radio show Lum and Abner broadcast in the 1940's. The Mattie Belle they were always talking about on their show was Mattie Darnell, she was their neighbor.) Then Robert remarry's Mary Jane Bradley about 1890, Al. I have Martha's parents as J. W. Howard, b 1822 in SC. Her mother Elizabeth M. Unknown, b 1832 Al. 1860 Census of Wayne Co. J.W. Howard, 38, (1822) wife Elizabeth M, 38, (1822) Children: Samuel W., 10 (1850), Mary F., 6 (1854), Martha A., 4 (1856), and Rebecca (?)., 1 (1859). This was Factory Fork. Samuel married Frances (1846) and had John (1880) and James (1883): (1900 Census McNairy Co son James living with him and son John, 20 is next door.) Also in the I920 McNairy Co, both John and Jim still live there. John Howard, (1880) Married Jessie (1881) and had daughter Vesta (1899) (John lived near Shiloh.) James (Jim) Howard, (1883) Married Donie (1878) and had daughter Gracie Mae Howard (1915) James (Jim) moved to Macon, Fayette County TN and remarried Daisey (1901). He died in Macon, Fayette Co., TN and is buried in Macon Cemetery. (Macon, Fayette Co., Tn is Where MY Darnell family is from, Robert Baily Darnell, b 1884 moved into Macon after 1910). Though J. W. Howard lived in Factory Creek they were not mentioned in the book. I have found little information on him. Sorry so wordy Nena

    3. Nena: I agree with David that it is frustrating sometimes. I tried for several years asking for info on the Jeter, Churchwell, Ray and Culp families with no responses. Then, suddenly you will get a hit and get pointed in the right direction. David is right about the fact that a lot of families are not into geneology sometimes or they aren't subscribers. Some of my best material came from folks who had done research before the computer age. The few years I lived in Clifton, in the 50's, I remember going to W. S. Howard's grocery and sticking my hand into that semi-cool Coke tank to get a Chocolate Solider or small Coke. The store was on the same side of the street as the old Russ hotel and the the theatre, at least I think so. I remember once going into the store and watching as the clerk(Ibeleive one of the Howard boys) pulled out a match box from under the counter and opening it to reveal a large tarantula that had come in a bunch of bananas. That was very impressive. Are you looking for a specific Howard? My dad, W. J. Jeter, lives in Kentucky now and at age 89 was near the age of W. S. He has a pretty good memory if you ask specific questions. I got a lot of my mother's family history from him. 3. Nena, It is frustrating isn't it. It happens that there is no one from that family that is interested in genealogy, and the ones that might be are not subscribed to this list. I don't have one scrap of material on the Howards, yet I know in later years, in the 20th century, there has been a Howard family that lived in Wayne County in Clifton and in the northeast part of Hardin County. It is still the same today. I think I can do a little research and come up with this family tree, however, still not sure that any of that family is interested. At this minute, the oldest Howard I know was William Howard. His son, W. S. Howard ran a grocery store in Clifton and the three sons of W. S. live in this area today. I also know the Howards are related to the Burrough and Copeland families. I'll see what I can find.
