As I understand it, these records are stored in Nashville. They cover things like land grants and powers of attorney, registration and sales of property--land, livestock, They were from old deed books and go from 1820's on through the 19th century. The reason I noted that I got the books from mountainpress.com was because it gave me a way to research names so that I could go to the state archives and ask for records. I was happy with what I found but cannot attest to anyone else's luck. Years ago someone on line said they had rounded up all the marriage records and I believe they were in the attic of the court house and lightening hit it and they were all ruined. Big problem for me as the court house in Monroe Co., Ohio burned (my main families went through there before 1860) and then the court house in Wayne Co., Illinois burned in the 1880s and again my main families were there from 1860 on. Then my family was in Wayne Co., TN from the early 1800s till the 1860s and a fire there. Now that you say the land records are there I will be trying to make a trip south. I live outside of Chicago so will be a research trip stopping along the way. I am down from John Hill (1767-abt 1829 or 1830) and Obedience Cullum (1766 to 1850). They had 12 children and chasing them down has been a labor of love and I am still trying to find who who married who and what happened to some of them. Jerilyn **************It's Tax Time! P.S........If they have what you want they will tell you when they answer your email and how much they cost.in the Email..........saves lots of running around. You can also write to the State Library and Archives in Nashville Tennessee and ask for forms to fill out and mail back for records.. Yes, the Wayne County Courthouse burned in 1975 or so, but almost all, if not all, of the land records were saved. The records are available for use in the courthouse. Also, the records are on microfilm at the Wayne County Public library. The inventory microfilm listing found on the Tennessee State Library and Archives website is a list of those records. In the Wayne County library there is a two volume abstract of county land records up to about 1855 or so. A Mr. Gray was the author. The librarian can help you find the books. You should make sure the Wayne County Library is open before you travel to Waynesboro. The are only open for a few hours on Wednesday and Saturday and they are closed on Sundays. Good luck. --- Jlktrees@aol.com wrote: > I am a little confused about the land records > situation. My information is that the courthouse burned in 1975, but that later on other records had been located. Yes it would be nice to know their inventory ........the State of Tennessee has sent people out to microfilm all records in Tennessee........I suppose that means they have a record at the state...........and you can purchase the record by mail, by research yourself, or email......they will let you know the charges when they find the reocord.............then you send the check........they send the record. Anymore information out there............we need it here, PLEASE! JOYCE Jlktrees@aol.com wrote: I am a little confused about the land records situation. Would someone tell me where to find land records for Wayne County in the 1850-1860s. I would appreciate any information. Marcia
My aunt told me a story that happened during the Civil war. My great grandparents Rev.Samuel Thomas Smith and his wife the former Sarah Frances Davis were living in Shawnetee, Wayne Co. During the birth of their third child James Henry born 12 November 1863, he was home and had to hide from troops by hiding under the floor by going thru a trap door. **************Planning your summer road trip?
