Jerry, what an interesting article. I'll use it in the upcoming June Journal. Do you think perhaps the "Cypress Inn citizen" the author had talked to (Grace Culver) could have been Grace Carver? Let me know if you agree with me. Can you send me a photo of yourself to use with the article about our meeting at Piney. You can E-mail it and I'll copy it. Thanks, Allen

Hi Folks I am pretty excited about a new source I found and wanted to share it in case it might be new to some of you as well. The information below is excerpted from a reply from TSLA, regarding a publication they have called ENUMERATION OF MALE INHABITANTS OF TWENTY-ONE YEARS OF AGE AND UPWARD, CITIZENS OF TENNESSEE, JANUARY 1, 1891 (Reed,1992). Hope this is helpful to you. They found my 2g grandfather who I lost after 1880. .....The 1891 enumeration of male voters gives the name, county of residence, census district (and sometimes the age & race) of individuals registered to vote in Tennessee. No other genealogical information is included in the listing. >... We will need to know the county of residence in order to search for the record. If there is a published index for the county, we can search for the name; if there is no index, we cannot search for a specific record. The microfilmed reels are available for interlibrary loan to your local library. > > Published indexes are available for: Anderson, Benton, Blount, Carroll, Carter, Cheatham, Clay, Cumberland, Dickson, Dyer, Fentress, Gibson, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Henry, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Jackson, Johnson, Knox, Lake, Lawrence, Lewis, Loudon, Macon, Morgan, Obion, Overton, Perry, Pickett, Putnam, Roane, Scott, Sevier, Shelby, Smith, Stewart, Sullivan, Trousdale, Unicoi, Washington, Wayne, Wayne, Weakley, and Williamson. >
To all members, I need to revisit the story below which was sent to you two days ago. I want to correct the name of the lady I visited with and who told me the story. I met Mrs. Sarah Cole (not Holt), age 92 back in 1988 in Waynesboro, TN. My notes: Parents: Joseph Bart Lay and Lettie Alice Copeland Lay Grandparents: Sarah Wade Cypert b. 1858 d. 1936 (mother was a Worthen?) Joseph Copeland from NC > AL> Bear Creek. Note: Se..ts, TN was called Pin Hook. Based on the age of the grandparent who was a child during the Civil War, her grandmother Sarah may have told the story to her daughter, but would have been talking about her mother facing up to the soldiers. Barbara W __________________ Many years ago I visited Waynesboro, TN and met a Mr. Lay in the courthouse who sent me to visit and elderly lady there in town. My old note books are packed away so this may not be correct. We visited and I was allowed to see her old pictures and hear her family stories. She told me that her mother (or grandmother) was living in the area that a troop of Civil War soldiers came marching through taking what they needed. She had hidden as much as possible including socks that she had knited to send to her soldier son. Some of the men found those items under the floor boards where she had placed them. She was so mad that after the soldiers had made camp not far from her house she marched up the hill and demanded to see the officer in charge. She told him what all his men had taken from her, then she demanded they return the socks and the officer had the men take them off their feet and return them to her. She did say that those men were in desperate need of socks but could not have her son's socks. Now that was a very strong lady. Barbara W
I had to laugh too, for the simple reason that you can't hide a baby under the floor without him or her soon making their hiding place known at the top of their lungs. :0 So of course, she meant the baby's father, who was at home during the birth of the child, and while still at home had to hide from the soldiers, who probably came into the house. I know it could not have been funny to those who had to hide. Some must have been killed if they could not hide in time or were found. Great story! Glad it wasn't a tragic one. Were they "Johnny Reb" or Union troops? Useful things, those trap doors. Wonder why they went out of style? Wouldn't they have been a good thing to have during the Moonshine era? Anyone have any more stories like that one or Barbara's? Barbara Wallace's story is wonderful, too. My grandmother was a Holt before marriage and was born in Wayne County so I would love it if Barbara could find out the name of the lady who told her this story (if she can root out her notebooks without a lot of trouble), and Barbara, could I have a copy of the story? Thanks Joyce and everyone for the shared information. I actually accessed the TSLA site last night after my post and found several items of interest available on ILL. There are many miles and states between me and Tennessee, so am excited about the opportunity to borrow some of these records. In reference to the story of Rev. Samuel Smith's son James Henry. Rev. Smith was my g-grandfather. I am at a loss to understand this statement. If James Henry was b. 1863, was he hidden under the floor by his parents or did he hide there himself. He would not have been over two years old.
