I got my copy from the Lawrence County historian. It was about $17, but I think they said they only had the one copy. If there is some demand for it, maybe they would make more copies. It's a memeographed manuscript of under 100 pages, as I recall. (I don't have it at hand at the moment.) If money is no object, I had found a copy on a used books site for over $100. (! - there's gold in them thar books!) I don't recall if that was Alibris or some other used book seller.

I was wondering if there is anything written that can tell me what went on at Cypress Inn, Tn. That is where my ggrandparents lived.........they had to leave......they lived right at the most southern tip of Tennessee and Alabama.......I have heard stories that it was pretty bad with the soldiers from the north and south crossing the border. My ggrandfather died in Mississippi,(1862) and the family moved into the other surrounding counties, mostly Maury County. joyce ---- KIDDYOWEN@aol.com wrote: > The Civil War was a horrible war here within the United States - a time when > family member fought against family member. The Civil War was a horrible war here within the United States - a time when family member fought against family member. I just visited a Civil War center this weekend and saw a short film which made me sick just to think about how very bad things actually were at that time....and that it was happening here in the U. S. seems unreal. The author states that his information was obtained partly from interviews with people about tales that were passed down in time, not from personal knowledge of the writer nor personal knowledge of the person he got the information from. Everything we read is not always exactly what happened. It would be good to have documentation. In doing genealogy research, I have several times come across census records that lists my family by the wrong head of household name. I had relatives named in that group, also. It would be good to get confirmation of the stories from another sourse. I think the truth is that during Civil war days the south especially was cut off from many supplies.times were hard and the only way for either side to supply their men with the necessities was to take it from the civilians. After all that is who they were fighting to protect. The problem was that both sides took it from the same people. Both sides were just as guilty of that sort of thing. There are good and bad men throughout all time periods regardless of their "side" or "color" or "faith". Nena The 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry was an organized unit that saw action all over Tennessee and in other states. Contrary to what David said, the "Union Gang" was most likely that, scoundrels who used the war as an opportunity to rob, rape and kill those left behind. While some members of organized units may have done similar activities, most were too busy with other activities, fighting a war. There are plenty of documented details of the 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry unit and others about their activities and location during the war. Bill
Yes it was the 2nd Mounted Infantry and a few from other units as I recall from one of your previous post. Tom Mix", "Roy Rodgers", "Gene Autry", and early "John Wayne" movies no doubt influenced the flavor and flair to some of the stories. He begins by explaining who he is. Leading up to the story he hears about the buggars. A story told to children to scare them into behaving."The Buggars with get you". (We know it today as the "Bugger Man" or "Boogy Man".) Fascinating finding out just where and how that originated! Who knew it would be so close to "home". He says that the Buggars were these Companies of Soldiers stationed in the area that for the most part acted independently from the rest of the army. I suspect it depended on your prospective view point at the time as to who the bad guys were north or south. And I agree ...Always confirm. The check must be made to Bobby Alford and mailed to Lawrence County Archives, 524 Gallaher St., Lawrenceburg, TN 38464. This is media mail rate and will take a little longer than first class, but several dollars cheaper. Nena

I've been reading this book also. Very troubling. I am relieved that none of my ancestors were mentioned! The treachery and greed evidenced were horrible. The womenfolk were certainly no shrinking violets. They lied to save their menfolk and shot the varmints whenever they got the chance!
Joyce, thanks so much for bringing up "Buggar Saga" again. It sounded so interesting when it was mentioned on the TNWAYNE site that I meant to check into ordering it, but then forgot about it until I saw your post just now. Hi Dortha...I have two Cooper families who came to Izard County Ar. about 1845/55. They are both in the DNa testing and are two different families. My line is from Bedford county and there is one Cooper girl I cannot account for. She was born about the time of your Nancy Cooper. Wells Cooper went to Ky by 1830 and I cannot account for one of his daughters. He died in Ky, I have followed all of his children but one, the daughter. I see in the 1870 Izard county ar census that Bazel Prater, age 60, was born in Ky. Maybe there is a connection??? Please e-mail me and I can give you more info.
