From: dennis hinkle <denlin1943@hotmail.com> Sent: Saturday, November 15, 2008 10:44 AM To: jwm_genealogy@hotmail.com Subject: RE: William Berry and Sarah Weatherford Thank you for your response. I have been a researcher since 1978 and more involved since 2001. I am a retired person and have more time to devote to various genealogy projects. I find inconsistances between Goodspeed's History of Wayne Co and what Mr. Byler wrote on Rootsweb. I am not questioning his abilities; I am questioning which is to be factual. Goodspeed (1886) wrote that William Berry came to Tennessee and settled in Hardin Co when he was a boy, with his mother. There is no mention of John W. Berry who Mr. Byler's believes is this brother. Both were in Wayne County in 1850 and near the other. If William and his mother came to Tennessee, was his father dead. If Mr. Byler is correct, then Williams father lived and died in Mississippi as did his mother. I just need to find out which is correct. Could this other William Berry be the unknown William A. Berry that Mr. Byler had little or no info about? The other matter is William's age; he was born in 1806 and not 1814. John was a younger brother. Mr. Byler may have picked up the 1814 date by mistake. All census reports show William to be born about 1806. Also, we are seeking his and Sarah Weatherford Berry's burial location, since he died 25 Jan. 1870 near Collinwood or Waynesboro. His second wife Lucinda King Berry is buried in the King Cemetery. If you could post this, I would appreciate the help. And I will write to Mr. Byler also. I am also attaching the comments from Rootsweb below for your information. Thanks -- dennis hinkle Found on Rootsweb from Wayne Co, Tn Historian and Genealogist, Edgar D. Byler, III, Collinwood, Tennessee II. The second family of Berry's in Wayne County, Tennessee is that of William H. Berry and his brother John W. Berry. a. John W. Berry was born 1812 in Georgia, the son of William and Elizabeth HALBERT Berry, and died 11 Feb 1882 in Yalobusha County, Mississippi. He married about 1833/4 in Wayne Co., TN to Jane STOUT (20 Oct 1813-26 Oct 1878) the daughter of Robert and Nancy Stout of Second Creek, Wayne Co., TN. Had a large family. b. William Henry Berry, John W.'s younger brother, was born 1 Aug 1814 in Georgia and died in Wayne Co., TN. He married Sarah Weatherford, daughter of William and Margaret POLK Weatherford. (This is the William Weatherford for whom Weatherford Creek in Wayne Co., TN is named. He was reputed to be an uncle of the noted Creek Chief "Red Eagle" who led the Creeks against Andy Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend (AL) in 1814. Can you help? -- dennis hinkle From: denlin1943@hotmail.com To: edby3@netease.net Subject: William Berry and Sarah Weatherford Date: Wed, 12 Nov 2008 20:03:13 +0000 Good afternoon. I am a researcher and a great, great, great, grandson to William and Sarah Weatheford Berry of Wayne Co, Tn. I appreciate the writing found on Rootsweb, Berry, Wayne Co. We have been searching for information regarding William's parents for years. We knew that his father had been killed when William was a young boy. Goodspeed's History of Wayne Co relates that he and his mother came to Tennessee from Georgia. William was a small boy when they settling in Hardin Co first. And so goes the history. Georgia Census records for 1810 were burned by the British; so there was not a good way to find the Berrys. Tax records and land records have not been helpful because too many Berrys came to Georgia. You have William born 1814 and I believe this is not consistant with the US Census Reports. William's first child was William A. Berry born in 1829. This would have made William 15 years old and I do not believe that was the case. We do have William's Will from the Waynesboro Courthouse in which he names all his children. According to several census reports, William, Sr. was born in 1806. I accept that John Berry may have been a brother. When I found them in Wayne Co at the same time; I figured that they had to be related. In searching the Census records for Hardin Co for 1820, the only lady found that might be William's mother was Hannah Berry with one or two small children. A Samuel Berry was listed next to her with a young family. Samuel could be another son or an in-law. William married Sarah about 1827 and after a few years, they moved to Wayne Co. Joseph Berry was about 3 years of age according to Goodspeed's histroy. William died 25 Jan. 1870. His Will was in probate until 1871. John Wyatt Berry was the Administrator of his Estate. Now to the point; do you have source citations for the info on William Berry's parents. I am referring to William Berry born in Georgia and the mother that you listed as Elizabeth Halbert Berry? Hannah may have been the rest of her name. I would appreciate any info regarding the sources. Thanks for you time and consideration. -- dennis hinkle

    1. [TNWAYNE] Hardin Co., TN Historical Society Meeting 10/30/08
    2. David Cagle
    3. The Hardin County Historical Society meeting last Thursday was a huge success. Dr. Timothy Smith spoke about the problems encountered by the civilian population on and around the Shiloh battlefield particularly during the battle and also during the period of occupation before the battle and the many many problems encountered after the battle. Many of you have ask that we provide the substance of the talk, either audio or a written copy over the internet. In that respect, we have Good News/Bad News, first the bad: Dr. Smith spoke form memory, not using notes, a paper or an outline and there is no audio. The Good News: Dr. Smith's talk came from a paper he wrote for the "Tennessee Historical Quarterly." You may contact the Tennessee Historical Society, Ground Floor War Memorial Building, Nashville TN 37243-0084. His article was printed in the Spring 2008 Quarterly, LXVII, No. 1, pages 36 through 55. 2. Mary Nell, Edward Morrisson (aka Morrisson) is my third great-grandfather. Have you researched the work done by Johnny Morrison (deceased) of Lawrence County? I feel sure you have, but wanted to mention it just in case. The TN Archives has his work on microfiche, two or three rolls, titled "Morrison, Hardin and Related Families." I have your Factory Creek book, you did a great job. I find something newly interesting everytime I look it over. Linda Ledlow **************Play online games for FREE at Games.com! 3. Hello, I am searching for any information on the Kelso family in Cravens Mills, Wayne County, TN between 1836 and 1860. The last time I found my ggg-grandfather Legrand Kelso was on the 1860 Census. By 1870, his wife, Elizabeth Ann (Holt) Kelso, and kids moved to Bell City, Stoddard County, MO and Legrand was not with them. I assume he died, but didn¹t know if he died in TN, MO, or somewhere in between. Also I read somewhere about Cravens Mills burning in 1863 during the Civil War. Do you think this could explain why they moved to MO? How would you find out if Legrand was a soldier in war? I would appreciate any information that you could give me about any Kelsos living in Wayne County. Sincerely, Courtney Kelso (courtykel@terraworld.net)
