    3. Lynda, You're thinking about tahe old Genconnect Boards that were hosted on Rootsweb. I don't know what happened to them or the information posted but sometime between the beginning of 2000 and last fall (2001) they simply disappeared. May have something to do with the buyout of Rootsweb by Ancestry.com. I was the administrator for those boards for Wayne County, but don't remember getting any kind of notification that they were being deleted, moved or whatever. However, the USGenWeb archives (don't know which version since I gave up on genweb politics years ago) has Tennessee pension records (and I assume other states as well) at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pensions/civilwar/tnindex.htm This is the USGenweb pension project. Now I'm gonna get on my soapbox for a little while. I've always disapproved of the proliferation of different archives, boards and things relating to counties, states, and subjects. It seems to me that it would be better for items relating to Wayne County, Tennessee to be posted on the Wayne County page - a one-stop shopping sort of thing. But I guess not all the county/state web pages are maintained on a regular basis. (it sometimes takes me a little while to get something posted to the page - hey, I do have to work for a living!) But if you don't monitor ALL the county boards, as well as teh various archives projects by State sites as well as the USGenWeb and its various resurrections, and lets not forget all the boards at GenForum, Ancestry.com and who knows how many other sites, you can easily get lost, confused and just down right tired. I thought the genweb project was a really great idea when it first started. However, all the back biting and negative politics on the national, state and sometimes local levels have made it difficult to keep track of everything. So I just quit. If you or anyone else wishes to submit biographies for the Wayne County page, goodness gracious and bless yor heart, I'll gladly post them. We do have pension records abstracts posted to the web page at http://www.netease.net/wayne/civilwarabstracts.htm We probably got 100 abstracts posted for Union soldiers. And probably 20 for Confederates. People just aren't sending them in. And I'm afraid I can't afford to buy pension files on people who aren't direct family. It wasn't too bad to order files when they were only $5.00 per file. And it wasn't too bad when it went up to $10.00. But it's now $37.00 for the whole file. Now multiply that by 900+ in the 2nd TMI alone and you can see why I stopped ordering pension application files. The idea behind the abstracts verses biographies was one of prime records verses secondary records. I had hoped that people would appreciate the abstracts and then later perhaps submit a biography. That hasn't happened, so i guess I'll set up a page when people can submit biographies. Anyone out there want to write the script for automatic submission of these biopgraphies???????(I really like the automatic query submission thingy!!!) If you do, it should be set up so that people could submit biographies on specific wars, e.s. Rev. War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, Indian Wars, Span-Am War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf Exercise, or anything in between or before. If you volunteer to code the page and write the script, please give enough room for people to submit a fairly good sized biography. And don't forget about pictures. (And please no bmp's!!!! those darned things clog up my inbox and take forever to download on a dialup connection.) Let me know folks. 3. David, I agree it would be nice to have detailed, documented histories of any of the units (USA or CSA) from this area. I'm surprised that no one has done anything with this other that William Morris who was and is working on the 2nd TN Mtd Inf. USA. Brent A. Cos did do a biography of Col. Jacob Barnett Biffle and I thought he also did a history of Biffle's Cavalry, but I can't find the information in my notes. It would be nice if we could get Cpt. T. J. Cypert's manuscript published since it deals with the 2nd TN Mtd Inf. I don't know whether he wrote it in 1868 during his first term in the Tennessee Senate or in the second term in the 1890's. I've seen it, but don't have a copy and the family guards them. There is so much history that hasn't been touched concerning the Civil War and the decades prior to it, in both Wayne and Hardin Counties. At least you all in Hardin County have Brazelton's history. The only thing we've got for Wayne is Meredith's manuscript in 1880 and the resulting section in Goodspeeds. It might be possible to determine a truer picture of some of the "tales" in Buggar Saga. Maurice's papers are supposedly in the UNA Library in Florence. I've not seen them, but understand that he did give them to UNA. That might help if you could decipher his codes and his "chicken scratching" -- the man definitely couldn't write a readable script. It would also require an indepth search of the Circuit Court Minutes in both Wayne County, Hardin County and Lawrence County in Tennessee as well as the Circuit Court minutes in Lauderdale. None of them are easy to work with. I don't remember if any of the minute books for Hardin County are missing, but there are one or two missing in Lawrence County. We have the books covering the period here in Wayne County, but none of the loose records survived the 1972 fire. Lauderdale County, Alabama is a mystery since I've not worked on their Circuit Court records. I understand that all the loose Circuit Court records are now stored in a warehouse in Florence and are not really accessible to the public. I've tried to get information through the mail and it was a futile exercise. I was trying to find out more about the "Caty Hills" and Grandma Catherine's activities during the period between 1854 and 1869 when she lived there and operated her "business". If would certainly be interesting to find an indictment against her for her "activities". If one could take a specific tale and then search the court records to see if anyone was ever charged, then a clearer picture might emerge. Maurice supposedly searched the Circuit Court records, but if he did, the information didn't make it into most of Buggar Saga. Some of the tales, especially those involving the 2nd TMI (the "Clifton Shebang") would require a thorough reading of all the pension applications submitted by members of the regiment. I only have about 100 of those applications out of over 900 which were filed. And I don't have many of the CSA pension applications. Anyway, I decline the nomination. I have the interest but not the energy to pursue this avenue of research. Edgar ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Cagle" <[email protected]> To: "Edgar D. 3. Mornin Jason, Could you do a lookup for me? My 3X GGrandfather Franklin Davis was supposidly killed in the Civil War. According to family he was inducted into the southern army in Vandzant Co. Tx. He was married in 1850 to Francis Norman in Lawrence Co. Tn. After years of searching all I have ever been able to find was a Franklin Middleton Davis. He was supposed to have been sworn in with his brother-in law, Matthew M. Norman, 2nd Lt., Co. 1, 115 Texas Cav. Or if you could direct me to a website, would be good. Any shred of evedince would be better than what I've got. 3. Edgar, Just for good measure, lets throw in The 6th Tennessee US, 19th (Biffle's)CS and the First Confederate. You might find a few people that fought in two or three of these 4 units? Can many of those Pruitt tales be unraveled to get at the truth, such as the Brewer tale below? Would be interesting? David ----- Original Message ----- From: Edgar D. 3. As has already been posted to the list, "Buggar Sage" is available from Anderson's Bookland in Florence, AL and I think the Books-A-Million store there also has copies. It is my understanding that Anderson's bought the stock of the last printing of the book from Polly Warren's daughter. I don't know if they bought the rights to the book, but think that likely. Please use great caution when reading anything in "Buggar Saga". While some of the tales are true, the exact details are often colored by the intervening years and by Maurice's own mindset. Some of the tales are completely false and without primary source documentation to substantiate a tale, should not be taken as fact. 'Nuf said. Now I wish someone would do a factual, documented book on the "Clifton Shebang" - the 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry. 2. Dortha, I have never read the book "Bugger Saga". If I ever find it I will read it. However, a friend who is a Civil War buff says some of his stories are untrue. The paragraph above this one states that the Brewers went to Melton's house. Melton heard them in the bushes and opened fire wounding one of the Brewers. The Brewers left but returned and killed Melton instantly. Later Elidge Melton's Uncle william Melton shot and killed Lewis Melton. This was supposed to have started because Elidge Melton was a Union sympathizer. However, the problem arises because Elidge Melton did not die until 1872.So the story may be incorrect. I am trying to find the book but... Elidge Melton had a sister, Adeline, that married William G. Trimmer who is my gggrandfather. that is about all I know about the situation. Betty

    3. Does anyone know more about this item? Dortha 1862 Bugger Saga - Wade Pruitt 1862 Later "Old Bill Melton, Eldige's Uncle came upon Lewis Brewer at a spring on Butler Creek at Old Bill Hensley's place (Lewis Brewer Cousin) and killed him. He would have killed the rest of them (Brewers) had he managed to find them.

    3. David, I would assume that the people who were attempting to found (or had founded) Mt. Etna, petitioned the legislature for incorporation of the villege. If there were any other laws regarding town, other than for incorporation, I am not familiar with them. In 1867, the people who lived at Wayne Furnace, voted to incorporate the villege. The act of the legislature was passed that same year. It was done primarily to keep taverns and liquor out of the villege and away from the workers at the furnace. State Sen. John Anderson Talley had sponsored a bill in 1866 that would prohibit any establishment from selling "spiritous liquors" within so many miles (two miles I believe) of the boundary of an incorporated town. This was an early effort in the Temperance Movement. You would need to see the original bill as presented to the legislature for Mt. Etna. It is possible there was an appended petition from the inhabitants or an election. I can't remember seeing anything in the private or public acts about Mt. Etna, but then, I wasn't looking for things dealing with Hardin County. Do you know if Mt. Etna was ever a post office? I don't have the post office records for Hardin County. The only reason I can see that an act was passed regarding Mt. Etna was for incorporation of the town or villege. Interesting. Looks like there is a lot more work that is needed here. Sorry you missed the Fair. I don't know if we had a big turnout or not, but it was an enjoyable day. Edgar ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Cagle" <[email protected]> To: "Edgar D. 3. Edgar, Sorry, You all planned you fair right in the middle of my so called Vacation. Didn't get back until today. I know you had a good time. I guess you saw on the list where someone got permission form the state to start a town in Hardin County in 1821, Mt. Etna. Nothing was ever done re the town as far as I know.
