SAVING AMERICA'S HISTORY Steve Johnson reports, 9/13/02. America is losing its World War Two veterans at a rate of 15 hundred a day. With each loss, there is the loss of a story and a loss of a piece of American History. For the past two years, the Library of Congress has been recording interviews with veterans for a permanent record. Now, the Huntsville-Madison County Library is going to be part of that effort. The library has plans to interview all 30,000 Madison County veterans and send their stories to Washington, according to the library's Bonnie Hallman. "I want them to tell me what they're comfortable telling me. If they want to talk about funny experiences they had, the food or how cold it was, or if they want to talk about battle--anything they want to tell me--I would love for them to tell me." One problem the library faces is the reluctance of many veterans to discuss their intense war experiences. However, 81-year-old Jimmy Taylor of Huntsville, a veteran with the 17th Airborne in Europe, says the vets have a responsibility to talk. "Hey, you know, in 20 years from now, we'll all be gone. People are going to be asking questions, and you're gone, and you're not here to answer the questions. World War Two veterans have got to talk about it for future generations." The interviews will begin soon. For interested volunteers, who want to help with the process, or for veterans, who want to give an interview, call 532-5954. For more information about the interview project and another project for veterans, called the "Celebration of Heroes," go to the library's web site at www.hpl.lib.al.us. The "Celebration of Heroes" will be a series of Panel Discussions, including veterans and talks by historians. The first event is Tuesday night, the 17th of September. "The Mighty Eighth" will be a panel discussion of the Eighth Air Force, and its battles over Germany. The "Celebration of Heroes" will run through December 7, Pearl Harbor Day. <a href="http://www.whnt.com/Global/story.asp?S=934869">Click Here</a> or http://www.whnt.com/Global/story.asp?S=934869 Jerry W. Anyone have old records that might show a pastor in the Waynesboro Area in the 1870's - 1880's by the name of James M. Galloway? James was in Wayne Co 1860 census living with his mother, Eliza Dandridge and sister Sarah Galloway. I find a record of a James M. Galloway who was of the Richland Presbytery who performed a marriage in Giles Co in 1895. Also show a J.M. Galloway minister who died Dec 3, 1898 - who was tied to the Lexington, Ellis Co., Mo churches? If you can help or direct me to resources that might have this information I would appreciate it. Thanks.
More updates to the Wayne County, Tennessee Genealogy and History pages. I've added the firsst two civil districts of the 1870 Population Schedules. Will be adding more as I get them input. Also added the remaining photographs from the McCorkle-Stafford Collection of the Wayne County Historical Society. Many of these photographs were made in Florence, AL by either Campbell's or Landrum's Studios, but the subjects are unidentified. We added several identified photographs to those already posted. Take a look at see if you can identify anyone. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnwayne/McCorkle/main.htm Edgar Edgar D. Hi, I am trying to find out some information. Looking for the second spouse of Sallie (Sarah) Irving White. She supposedly married a Holt and is supposedly buried in the plot of this spouse in the McGleary cemetary. However, she is alone there, not even anyone within 2-3 plots. Is there an easy way to find out the name of the person who owned the plot? Do you think that Shackleford funeral folks might have records??? yvette
Does anyone have any information on Martha Roberta White b 7-21-1888 in Wayne county TN? As of this evening folks, I've added one additional Bible record, a record of the meeting of the Cypress Land Company in February 1849, updated the queries and posted some updates to the Ancestor Researcher database. Also added a new unknown photograph on the Who Am I? page. Will be adding a lot more over the weekend from the McCorkle-Stafford Collection. Hope you all have a safe Labor Day weekend. I intend to stay where it's cool - indoors - as much as possible. Edgar
