    1. [TNWAYNE] Thomas and Salley Evens
    2. Can any one tell me where the graves of Thomas Evens and Salley Evens may be? They are probably buried in a family cemetery which isn't listed. Thomas Evens and Nicholas Welch were among the early settlers in Perry and Wayne CO. Thomas was born appx.1788. Salley was born appx.1814 and died Sept. 17 1844, first wife of John D. Evens, she was the daughter of Nicholas Welch. Thank you Paul H Evens

    3. Hadn't visited the Wayne County site for a while, but THANKS for the Mortality Schedules you added. The 1850 schedule shows an Anna ALEN aged 45 that died of Fever that could be of interest. If anyone knows about this Anna Alen or the Howel Alen in District 10 of the 1850 Wayne County Census I would like to hear from you. Keep up the good work Edgar. It is appreciated! Bratcher Bible Record History pages updated: A Short History of Collinwood by the late Eva Burns Smith Luttrell has been added And I've added a page showing the building of the chemical plant in Collinwood between Mar and Jun 1918. There are 48 photographs here with a brief description of each photograph on the index page. I'm still working on the 6th District of the 1870 and coding the 1880 Census of Agriculture. Edgar

    3. Your best bet would be to find someone who knows where it is and get them to take you. But if that's not an option, here are some directions from Collinwood. From Collinwood, travel south on Highway 13, after passing the Wayne County Memorial Gardens on the left, take the first road to the right. This is the Bear Creek Road. Now this is just a guess but I would say you'll need to go about 6 miles and you'll see the Cromwell Crossroads Cemetery and Church on the right. Take the road on the right just passed the church. About a mile down this road it will fork, take the left fork. About two miles after the fork there will be a gravel logging road on the right which goes to Horton Cemetery. It's been probably 10 years or more since I've been to the cemetery and I'm sure things have changed in the area. Someone said there was a sign up now. The area around the gravel road when I was last there was cut-over timber (clear cut) and probably had young pine seedlings planted there. Anyway, the cemetery was back in the woods behind where it was clear cut. It would be wise not to go there in a low car. Some of those gravel logging roads can be rough. I'm thinking they do work on that road some before decoration at the cemetery so you might want to try planning a trip to it around that time. Good luck and maybe you can find it. Jerry W. 3. Forwarded FYI from the Archives-CC mail list Hi Everyone: The old genealogy scam is back. www.genseekers.com Behind the password protection are links to the free genealogy on-line. There is no content of their own. In order to get the "5-day free trial" you have to surrender a credit card or bank account number. You have to cancel within 5 days or you get dinged. Guess what? The cancellation e-mail bounces. Does this surprise you? One person who recently fell for the come-on had his/her account dinged not once, but twice. It is time to remind folks on your state and county mailing lists about these scoundrels. It has been a couple of years since we have mentioned this. Permission is granted to pass this on.

    2. I would appreciate some help with this family? My great grandfather Wm. Worthen 21 and new wife Sarah Ann (Unknown) age 22 lived next door to Hiram Bryson in the 1850 Census. I have come to wonder if Sarah Ann could have been the older da. of John Bryson SR who is listed in the 1840 census; see information listed below. Sarah Ann must have died soon after their son, John Willis was born (Dec. 1850) because Wm, his son along with a new wife, Elizabeth Colphen moved to TX between 1851-1854. I also noticed all the Bryson boys were gone by 1860 except John Bryson JR. William S. may have stopped off in AR before reaching TX. I would like to know the spouses of the two daughter's of John Brison who are listed in the 1840. Also, would like to know if John is related to the Bryson men found in the 1850 census. All but one man was in their 20s during 1840 so must not have lived in Wayne county at that time. 2. Edgar D. Byler, III
    3. Thanks to Mrs. Imogene H. Hagan of Leoma, Tennessee we have been able to identify another of the unknown photographs in the McCorkle collection. The photograph, now marked "identified" on the first index page, is a photograph of William Henry Monroe Pruitt, 1866 - 1910, of Pruitton, Alabama. If you haven't taken the time to look over the unidentified photographs in the McCorkle Collection, please take some time and see if you can identify any of them. I also published the pictures on the first page of the unidentified photographs in the "Historian" and that was where Mrs. Hagan saw the photo of William Henry Monroe Pruitt. I can't believe that no one knows who the people are portrayed in these beautiful, tin-type photographs and the later photos. Edgar

    3. Boy, have I been busy today!!! Added a bunch of new school photos to the School Days page. Check the school days index. Also added the 1850, 1860 and 1880 mortality schedules for Wayne County. Gerry Moore has finished the 1880 Agricultural Schedule (Census of Agriculture) and as soon as I can get it coded will upload to the web page. Look for it sometime later this coming week (hopefully???) Does anyone have access to the Slave Schedules for Wayne County for 1850 and 1860? If you do, would you be willing to transcribe them in their entirety (Wayne County only)? If so, please let me know. I only have names of slave owners and the total number owned from the 1860, not the breakdown by age, etc. Edgar

    3. I just had a look at the school group pictures on the Wayne County website. I also have the Johnson School or Johnson's Chapel School on my website and it's a much better picture. In addition I also have the Gilchrist School on my site. So Edgar if you want to copy these and move them to the Wayne County feel free to do so. Just let me know when you've got them moved and I'll delete them from my site. I see no need to have them on both sites. I also have several family pictures up on my website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jwmurphy/ for those who are interested. By the way Edgar, the header on the Johnson School webpage reads, "Birch Grove School, Noverber 4, 1902". That probably needs changing. :-) Jerry W. 3. Can anyone give me specific directions to Horton Cemetery? This past Fall, we passed through Wayne County on a trip, stopped and inquired, and found our way as far as the sign that says "Horton Cemetery" at the side of the road. However, we found no cemetery. My husband doesn't like to "prowl" around in unfamiliar territory and was reluctant to pursue the dirt road(?) that seemed to come to a "Y". Neither branch seemed to go anywhere, so I missed out on what may have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But should I ever have the chance again, I'd like to be prepared!! Please help, anyone? Where is the cemetery from the sign? Thanks, Rita

    1. [TNWAYNE] Broadway Family
    2. I spent the weekend rereading past issues of the Wayne County Historian and came across a picture submitted by Mrs. Alta Gibson. The picture was of the William W. Robertson family. In the picture there was a woman identified as Mary Jane Broadway. My question is, does anyone have any information on Mary Jane Broadway or the Broadway (Broadaway) family? One other item, does anyone know how I could obtain a copy of "Wayne County Tennessee History & Families 1817-1995"? Or, is there someone who has a copy that could do some look-ups for me from the book? I certainly enjoy receiving the Wayne County Historian and look forward to future publications. Thanks for any help to my above questions.
