Gregory, I have a copy of an article written in 1979 by Patrick Thomas in the Nashville Banner stating that the great grandfather of John Wesley Hardin (JWH) was Swan Hardin of Maury Co. TN. Swan was enumerated in the 1820 census of Maury as Swan Hardon. Supposedly Swan had four children as follows: Augustine B. Hardin; William Hardin; Benjamin Franklin Hardin and Benjamin Watson Hardin, the grandfather of JWH. In 1825, apparently Augustine, a lawyer, and Benjamin Franklin, then age 22, got in a gunfight on court square in Columbia and killed two men, Isaac N. Porter and William H. Williamson. All four brothers were indicted for the murders so they left the county leaving Swan, who was innocent, holding the bag. He was tried in adjacent Rutherford County in 1826 and found guilty of manslaughter. Supposedly he moved to Hardin County and eventually to Texas. I find only one reference to Swan Hardin in Hardin County. "Hardin County Tennessee Records, 1820-1860" by Tony Hays. On 20 December 1824, Swan and Mary Hardin qualified as executor and executrix of the last will and testament of Martin Hardin. Swan Shows in the 1820 census of Maury Co., but I have not located him in another census. There is a William H. Hardin living in Lawrence Co., TN in 1830. This could be the son of Swan? I'm seeking information on the following family. HENRY H. EVANS was my GGG Uncle. His brother ALLEN B. EVANS & Martha Westmoreland (Glover) EVANS of Perry County, TN were my GG Grandparents. Also seek descendants of their siblings, LUCY (EVANS) KNIGHT who married Charles Knight; PETER EVANS who married Elizabeth Mitchell; JOHN ANDREW EVANS who married Nancy Samford; THOMAS EVANS (no other info on him); SUSANNAH (EVANS) PARROTT who married Thomas F. Parrott. Thomas F. Parrott was living in the Fishing Creek District of Granville Co., NC, as late as 1840, with a large family (Granville Co. Census, 1840, p. 96). In 1830 there was a female, age 60-70, who may have been WINNIFRED (ANDREWS) EVANS, his wife SUSANNAH (EVANS's) mother. WINNIFRED (ANDREWS) EVANS was the wife of MARK EVANS. Hi list, Would like to learn more about the following folks: 1916 H. E. Wortham bought from J. D. McGee and wife C. C. McGee of Lauderdale, AL land located in Wayne County, TN in Dist. # 5, Range 11, Sec 1 and 2 on the Grassy Fork of Second Creek 200 acres. He paid $700. This land touched the lands of J. A. Lacefield and P. Hutton. 1919 In September of 1919 H. E. Wartham and wife Annie (aka A.E.) sold 20 acres of this land to Denis Johnson for $125, located in District #5 Range 11 Section 1 and 2 on the waters of Grassy Creek located next to land known as the John McGee land. If I understand the deed correctly, H. E. and Annie Wartham signed those papers in Sumter County, AL the town of Pa-oba, AL 1921 and it was not filed until 1930 H. W. Wortham also sold 180 acres of that land to J. W. Reed for $1000; Nov 3, 1919 Would like to know more about H. E. and Annie Wortham. Thanks, Barbara

Joab A. Russell, 33 TN, and family were living in Hardin County Tennessee as shown by the 1860 census. I believe that Joab A. Russell joined Capt. C. S. Robertson's Cavalry Company from Hardin County in the fall of 1861. He soon became Capt. of "B" Co., 52nd Tennessee Infantry, under the command of Col. Benjamin J. Lea, and after recovering from a wound at Stones River, became Captain of "A" Company of 21st "Wilson's" Cavalry Regiment under Forrest. Can someone tell me what happened to Capt. J, A, Russell? Is J. A. Russell and Joab A. Russell one and the same? Is this the Rev. J. A. Russell that lived in OK? Thanks, David
I am researching the family of James Knox Broadaway, Jr. who married Rebecca Holmes and were the parents of 13 children and hoping someone can help me who has knowledge of this family. I am looking for information on the family of his father, James Knox Broadaway, Sr. and James' grandfather, Drury Broadaway. I have a lot of history on James but lack the information I need to connect him to my Broadaway family. Also, I am trying to connect James, Jr. to Richard B. Broadaway who married Elizabeth _________ and at one time they lived in Washington Township in Conway County, Arkansas. One other item, does anyone know how I can contact Jarrell M. Newberry who descends from this family line? Thank you. Any information is greatfully appreciated. I am searching for the parents of John Franklin Cunningham, b. 15 Feb 1834 TN children were born in Wayne County, TN. In 1850 there are 3 young Cunningham men in Phillips households. Franklin is about the right age to be the John Franklin Cunningham. In 1840 ther was a Patsy Cunningham with 1 son under 5, two sons age 5 to 10 and one son age 10 to 15. Was she the wife of Noah Cunningham? Were these the parents of John F.? Thanks for any help on this family. Loretta Davis
I'm working on an article for the journal and a page for the web site on the making of the motion picture, "Natchez Trace" which was shot in Wayne County (Natural Bridge area) and at Flatwoods in 1956. I have several photographs from "The Nashville Tennesseean" as well as some stills which were shared by Mrs. Dimple Yeiser. I am looking for a copy of the movie poster and any other photographs (and or information) relating to the film and its production. I've been seeking a print of this movie for the last 20 years, and others have sought for a longer period, and yet no one anywhere seems to know if there is a print of the movie. I understand that the company that owned (or was) Panorama Pictures (the production company that did the movie) has sold all of its films to Turner Broadcasting. However, last time I checked, they did not have a film in the collection that was entitled "Natchez Trace". Anyone got any ideas for more material about the movie? Also do any of you happen to have any "memorabilia" from the film that you would share with me for the article and the web page? (scans would be sufficient). Edgar
I've got a question to pose to you all and need your input. I've posted the photographs which were made of the construction of the chemical plant at Collinwood in 1918. In the process of researching the Tennessee Valley Iron and Railroad Company and the building of the plant, I have learned that there were also motion pictures made of the project. Contact with the National Archives has not yet yielded any information about the film, or any information about it or the other construction photos. Do any of you have any idea where we might find either the negative or a print of the "motion pictures" which was made in 1918 of the construction of the plant?? Anyone on the list live in the Washington DC area and have time to do a little "digging" at NARA? What about anyone living in the Montgomery Alabama area who might have access to Maxwell Air Force Base and the Air Force Library? The History of the Bureau of Aeroplane Manufacture is on file at the library at Maxwell but I've not had time to pay the place a visit. If you have any suggestions or would be willing to do a little "free" research, please let me know. edgar
Well, it was brought to my attention this evening that I had some problems with the photographs uploaded to the School Days section. Apparently I forgot to upload several of the photographs and on two instances, even forgot to upload the pages themselves. That has all be corrected now and all the images load correctly. I even managed to find a scan of the original photograph of the 1898 Waynesboro School Group which I think is a little better than the scan of the newpaper print. So my apologies to you all. Edgar
I might add that scans of the newspaper clippings are better than the xerox copies. So if you don't have an original but do have a newspaper clipping of one of the school groups, scan it and send it to Edgar. Jerry W. I've added a few more pictures to the web page as of yesterday, 5 March. There are three new ones on the Friends and Family page as well as two more school groups on the School Days page. I have a request of you. Please check out the school group photographs and if you happen to have an original photograph of any of these, or one that isn't posted, please let me know (or send me a scan if possible). These newest photos on the School Days pages were all taken from xerox copies of newspaper clippings and the scans are not as clear as they would be if taken from an original photograph. Thanks. To all friends, relatives and associates my Dad is corresponding with: This Darwin Pope, Grover's son. I hate to the bearer of bad news but I feel it only necessary to inform you all of my Dad's condition. My father, Grover, suffered a massive stroke Tuesday at 1pm. This happened here at his home. It came on sudden and was very unexpected. Despite his chemotherapy which as some of you might know of he has been in good spirit and had been doing better than expected. His cancer was thought to have been removed successfully even though he has had a difficult recovery time. He finished his 4th of 6 chemo treatments last week. He was informed then of the effect the blood thinner he had been taking for his heart and the role it could play on affecting his thinning and thickening of blood with chemo. As stated, Tuesday he suffered a massive stroke. He is in Jackson General hospital in Jackson in room 635 if anyone wishes to send cards or such. The worst news is along with the stroke it has cause complications as we found out yesterday of the effect it has had on his throat muscles which is not allowing him to secrete the fluids which lay in his throat and should be passed or something to that effect. This has caused fluid to build up in his lungs now and begin to bring on pneumonia which is life threatening in his condition. The first day or so he was in and out and somewhat coherient to his surrounding. As of yesterday his fever has risen and he is not responding well. My father is basically fighting for his life now. I and my wife are at home tonight with my mother so she can rest here and will be returning to Jackson tomorrow. The next 48 hours are as the doctor says, "touch and go". They are giving him the best of care and comfort and we are all praying he become concious soon and with God's grace can find a way to fight. I felt it my obligation to let all of you whether friend or family, whom I know he enjoys contact with so much on here as he finds refuge getting online and keeping touch with you all for correspondence and for his geneology research he loves so dearly, to inform you of the circumstances and what he is battling. Thank you all for giving him happiness in corresponding with him and please keep him in thought and prayer the next couple of days. I will try my best to again group mail all of you any changes and outcome of this tragic thing that has feel on this wonderful man..my Father. Again thank you and I hope this was appropriate enough and finds you all well. He things highly of all his internet friends and family. I am not sure how soon I will back here at his computer to receive or reply to any of his emails. I pray soon, he himself can contact you all once again. If you will wish to write, that will be fine but you might not receive a response quickly but I will do my best. My email is [email protected] if any of you wish to have me keep you updated perhaps more efficiently. Again, thank you all for your time and prayers.

Based on what you wrote, I have different info for Sally. I show her parents to be Nicholas Welch and Nancy WHITE. I show the parents of John David Evens to be Thomas Elijah Evens and Sallie WELCH (Possibly a sister of Nicholas Welch). If I'm wrong, I hope you have better information than I have, and that you're gonna share it with me. Thomas states that Swan Hardin settled in Maury County before 1820. I find his name on that census, listed as Swan Hardon. The Hardins apparently had lived long enough in Maury to establish themselves in the community. Swan Hardin, a Justice of the Peace, had sons as follows: Benjamin Franklin Hardin , probably the youngest, born in 1803; Augustine B. Hardin, a lawyer; William Hardin was editor of the "Columbia Report"; and Benjamin Watson Hardin, the grandfather of John Wesley Hardin, was a deputy sheriff. In October of 1825, two of the brothers were involved in a shootout on the court square in Columbia. Augustine B. Hardin, the lawyer, killed deputy county court clerk, Isaac N. Porter. Benjamin Franklin Hardin, then 22, shot William H. Williamson in the back. It is thought that politics was involved. The four brothers were indicted for these killings, but quickly left for Texas. Their father Swan, the only one they could catch, was brought to trial in Rutherford County Tennessee in March 1826 after a squabble over a change of venue. Swan had requested that his trial be moved to Hickman, Lawrence, Wayne or Hardin County. The prosecutor said that the Hardins have several blood relatives living and some are men of very extensive influence, in those counties. It was stated that Hardin County was named for a member of Swan's clan. Swan was found innocent of murder, but guilty of manslaughter and was branded with the letters "MS" on his left thumb. Afterward, Swan apparently left for Hardin County and eventually joined the others of his family in Texas. Jake Boroughs sent me a note showing that James Gibson Hardin, father of John Wesley, was born in Wayne Co., TN in 1823. (The Banner article lists John Wesley's father as Joseph Gibson Hardin and grandfather as Benjamin Watson Hardin) I don't believe this family ran off to Texas as fast as the Banner article would have you believe.
